More info.

Ben spent Monday night ice fishing on Silver Lake, where he lives with his father, Kevin Jacobson. The Cumberland man had left the house at 7:30 p.m. and, according to the Sheriff’s Department log, his father said tracks showed him and his girlfriend leaving the ice on the lake located to the northeast of Cumberland.

Family distraught as search continues for missing Cumberland man
I'm confused by the sequence of events. Who was with him last? The girlfriend or father?

I like ice fishing as much as the next person (ok, that's a lie) but I don't think cars and trucks should be allowed on the ice. Lakes are for boats, Roads are for cars, and ice eventually cracks and melts. Sunken cars are bad news for both fishermen and fish.
That being said, I hope Ben drove to Florida to catch some large mouth bass.

Do I have the locations right? Google says the last phone ping is over 300 miles from Silver Lake?

Thank you @mlhenn, not Silver Lake. Why can't they say the name of the Lake he was ice fishing at o_O

  • #31
I'm having trouble understanding the details.
1. He was fishing at night.
2. He left home at 7:30 p.m.
Was he fishing before or after he left home?
It sounds like he left home to go to the lake.

1. His dad saw tracks where the vehicle left the lake.
2. His phone pinged near the lake area at 9:13 p.m.
When did his dad see the tracks? It sounds like he was still in that area at 9 p.m. when the phone went off.

Why does it mention his girlfriend but not say that she's missing?

I hate to add to the confusion, but...

I can't answer your questions but I would like to add a few of my own.

My understanding...

Mon, Feb 8 Ben and his girlfriend were ice fishing until after dark on Silver Lake where he lives. He was last seen in his truck leaving his home at 7:30 p.m.

Mon, Feb 8 @ 9:12 p.m. - Last ping recorded 5.53 miles east/northeast of the tower at 2522 Hwy 63, Cumberland. (LE received this information on Wed, Feb 10)

At some point, Ben's father observed tracks of Ben and his girlfriend which indicate they had made it off the lake.

These are a few of the questions I have...
  1. Was Ben's girlfriend in the truck with him when he left?
  2. When and where did she last see him?
  3. Did she have her own car there or did Ben drive her home?
  4. If so, did she leave something behind and Ben left to take it to her?
  5. Where does the girlfriend live and with whom?
  6. Could Ben be somewhere between her house and his?
  7. Is either home in the area of the last ping?

According to Google Maps posted by @Knox, Silver Lake and 2522 Highway 63 are a 5-hour drive apart, but the time difference given between him heading out and the last ping is less than two hours (7:30 pm vs 9:13 pm). What am I missing?

ETA: Got it now. It's likely Rice Lake, not Silver Lake. The former is much closer to the last ping - 5 miles or so away. Cumberland (his work) and Rice Lake are in Barron County.

ETA2: Doesn't "Cumberland man" in the article title imply that he lives in Cumberland? I found that he's from Rice Lake on his fb.

Second, the article below states that the family has a property in Barnes. The last ping could put him on HW 53 on the way to Barnes. What if he had an accident en route?

Yes. Silver Lake is not a city or village. It's the name of the actual lake. Don't confuse it with the city, which is a different place. Basically, the last ping matches up with where he was fishing.

UPDATE: Jacobson search continues; family distraught | Free | apg-wi.com (apg-wi.com)

[...]

Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said two detectives have been assigned to aggressively investigate the case full-time, following up leads and tips, and interviewing friends and family.

[...]

It’s odd for a 22-year-old to disappear who has no reason to do so, Fitzgerald said. There apparently was no triggering event, such as a break-up, job loss or other signs of trouble.

[...]

Fitzgerald recognized that many people are frustrated at not being able to actively seek for signs of Ben’s life, but the department can’t pinpoint an area to search until detectives find the pickup truck, license plate RN 2780, or a solid lead falls into their lap. As soon as that happens, a search team will be activated, he said.

The sheriff urged people to share posts and call the department at 715-537-3106 with tips no matter how inconsequential they may seem.

“Any information is good information until we determine it’s not,” Fitzgerald said.

Ben’s brother Zach concurred and made a plea to the community: “Check the roads, check the cars, check the people around you.”

So the last ping location wasn't specific enough? There must be a logical explanation as to why his phone went dark when it did.
