WI WI - James Yoblonski, 13, took family's car, found on USH 12, may be in Devil's Lake State Park area, Baraboo, 12 Jun 2023 *reward*

JUN 16, 2023
Day five of the search for missing James Yoblonski is underway in Sauk County.

Officers from across the state gathered near Devil's Lake State Park to search for the 13-year-old again Friday.

[...]

Thursday, Lt. Steven Schram with the Sauk County Sheriff's Office said searchers have come across signs of life, including cut branches and possible boot prints.

James' father told 27 News James received a survival book earlier in the year. And he believes the teen took the book with him when he went into the woods. A missing gun has also not been found.

A kind of nice bulleted sort of summary post that had a few new (to me, at least) tidbits I'd not seen stated officially:
- K9s and helicopters are being used along with officers from all 72 Wisconsin counties to search for James.
- They believe he may have traveled south west but they can’t be sure.
- At this point investigators do not believe anything suspicious occurred and do not believe anyone else is or was with James.

IMO it's a great post to check out, especially if someone is just wanting to get up to speed on the case.

And...even more recently:

Investigators say they found even more items today leading them to believe James Yoblonski is alive and could be purposely avoiding law enforcement

Investigators say James has indicated wanting to see “how long he can survive off the grid” and believe he could be trying to do that.

Lt. Steven Schram tells us they found a second campsite that could belong to James along with a pair of socks & a knife sheath nearby.

Additionally, no longer "officer only" but have concerns about more being involved also pushing James further into the woods.

Schram said when the search began they were looking at it as a search and rescue but since finding signs of human activity pointing to James - they believe James is purposely avoiding officers and attempting to complete a ‘survival mission’.

Investigators say search crews have pulled back after concerns that James might run further into the woods if he sees them.
The search is no longer “officer only”
but investigators say they are not asking for the publics help and worry more foot traffic could push James away as well.

Another article talking about James wanting to be a survivalist and these campgrounds mirroring those in the book he has:

Crews are also now working with knowledge that before James disappeared, he expressed to multiple people he wanted to be a survivalist.

"He is likely in possession of one of a series of books entitled 'living off the grid,' which has information in it to survive in the woods by yourself, including water filtration, how to build camps," Schram said. "Some of that is what's leading us to believe that the structures that we're finding are probably left by James, because they're built in a way that mirrors what was in that book."

Also, LE has pulled back BUT left cameras:

Crews have left behind cameras near the areas where they suspect James has been. If any motion is detected, they will get an alert immediately to respond.

Still no James. :(
So sad for his worried loved ones.

Even experienced adults have failed to succeed at living off the grid.
Reading years ago about the terrorist, Eric Rudolph, much was made of his ability to survive in the wilderness -- whilst ER was on the lam.
(He was caught rummaging through a dumpster for food behind a grocery store!)

I want to hope that James took plenty of food with him.
Still, it's been going on way too long !!

  • The number of LE searching is now reduced, as they believe he does not want to be found.
  • During Friday’s search, they found a second campsite with a jug of water, socks and a knife sheath that they believe belong to James.
  • Police believe James is alive and has access to food and water.
  • They plan to continue searching throughout the weekend and into next week.
"We learned that he has made comments or at least talked to some of his fellow students in the past... essentially saying, 'How long do you think I can survive in the woods by myself for?'" Schram said. "That was something that triggered to us, 'Okay, maybe this isn't somebody who's in distress but somebody who went out into the woods with a purpose."

  • James is now believed to have two woodland survival manuals.
  • LE have located evidence, such as small campsites and clothing items, which correspond with instructions in such manuals.

No other photos of James ?
Is his hair longer now ?
Would he be wearing a hat with a brim ?
Etc.
I thought the only photo provided looked odd, like a 'paint' version. Js.
Any other pics ?
It would help to se a variety of photos.

In an exclusive interview with 27 News, James' father Bill Yoblonski said this is unlike his son and can't wrap his head around why he would run off like this.

"He's a smart kid," Bill said. "This is uncalled for, to do something like this and not to talk to anybody about it."

[...]

"I bought some off grid books and come to find out he's got one of those with him too," he added.

[...]

"I hope he knows that we love him and we just want him home and safe," he said. "He's not in trouble I just want him home."

The search for 13-year-old boy that has been missing since Monday continued into the weekend as authorities believe the boy is alive and attempting to live off the grid, according to the Wisconsin State Journal.

[...]

Schram [Sauk Co Lt.] added that law enforcement is attempting to "reduce visible impact" because the department believes this is potentially pushing Yoblonski farther away. Additionally, two officers have been taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained on the Baraboo Bluffs terrain. For these reasons, the Sauk County Sheriff's Office discourages public involvement in the search.

This is a great relief to read. I hope he is just on an adventure and he’s found by SAR.

James Yoblonski was reported missing on Tuesday after his family told the Sauk County Sheriff's Office that the boy left his home overnight Monday in a family vehicle that was later recovered on U.S. Highway 12. The boy's family has told officials that a handgun in the home is also missing.

Search parties organized by local law enforcement have searched wooded areas along U.S. Highway 12 near Devil's Lake State Park, Sauk County Lt. Steven Schram told the Wisconsin State Journal. The searches have revealed several makeshift campsites and some clothing that is believed to belong to Yoblonski.

Schram added that law enforcement is attempting to "reduce visible impact" because the department believes this is potentially pushing Yoblonski farther away. Additionally, two officers have been taken to the hospital due to injuries sustained on the Baraboo Bluffs terrain. *worried about this kid…

Nothing new. :(

JUN 19, 2023
One week has passed since a 13-year-old Sauk County boy vanished after leaving his house and entering Devil’s Lake State Park.
They need to find him and it's good to know the search efforts are ongoing !
James is going to run out of food if he hasn't already.
I still wish they'd release more photos ... and maybe a computer-generated image of him with longer hair ?
(I get it that there's prob. no one else out in that park area who would fit his description and out hiking alone.)
Beside insects and animal predators, there are human predators out there as well !

On Monday, Schram said Yoblonski may have been better prepared to survive in the woods than officials first believed.

"We believe he may be in possession of even more resources than we initially thought, mostly including more food," Schram said. "Other than that, we continue to investigate, and follow up, and look for more leads and more information."

I was coming to highlight that encouraging bit as well!

Also of note in that piece:

Officials do not believe Yoblonski is a threat to himself or others. Multiple deputies have needed medical attention due to injuries they suffered while looking for the teen.

I wonder where he got all the food from, did he take it from his family home... if so they'd notice a large amount missing or did he take money and go to the store? Then there might be cctv footage. That also makes me wonder if he saved up his own pocket money, or if money was also missing

James may still be alive, according to evidence discovered by searchers, but they acknowledge that it is challenging to locate a single teenage boy in the Devil’s Lake State Park’s forest.

I'm presuming heat-seeking cameras from helicopters have been used?
It would be easy to ascertain on the screen if it was a bear/boar or a human.
