Barron County Sheriff announces press conference giving update on Closs case
Fitzgerald will be holding a press conference Tuesday January 15 at 10 a.m. The 15th is three months to the day since Closs went missing.

Fitzgerald said the case remains active and he will give as much information as possible without jeopardizing the case.

The sheriff said he is holding the press conference in order to give information that is credible.

Sheriff Fitzgerald stated in an email sent to media that at this time “this remains an active case" and will provide as much information as possible during the press conference as long as it does not jeopardize the case.

Sheriff Fitzgerald also stressed that if information “does not come from me, it is not considered credible.”

The Barron County Sheriff concluded by saying that “all [of] our partners working on the case we be available” during the press conference.

The press conference will be held at 10a in the lobby of the Barron County Sheriff's Department located at 1420 State Hwy 25 in Barron, WI.

Update planned next week in case of missing teen Jayme Closs

Barron County Sheriff Christ Fitzgerald says next week will mark 90 days since authorities believe Jayme was abducted. He plans to update the media on Jan. 15 about new partners and an expanded team that’s working to find her.

Fitzgerald says this is still an active case and he’ll provide as much information as he can without jeopardizing the investigation.

A $50,000 reward is on the table in the Jayme Closs case. So far, the impact has been minimal.
A few weeks after Jayme Closs disappeared under a cloud of mystery from her family's home, the reward for information leading to the whereabouts of the 13-year-old girl surged to $50,000.

But the sizable payout — which started at $25,000 before doubling — hasn’t led to a breakthrough in the investigation into the Oct. 15 murders of Jayme’s parents, James and Denise Closs. Or Jayme’s apparent abduction.

And there’s a good chance the money will never be claimed.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin that while offering a reward is typically done in high-profile missing persons cases, it hasn’t made an impact on Jayme’s case.

“The reward didn’t spike our tips,” Fitzgerald said. “Our tips spiked because a 13-year-old girl is missing."

While the reward in the Closs case isn’t generating significant leads, tips have not dried up, said Sheriff Fitzgerald.

“They’re still coming in, more than I thought (they would),” he said. “I’m very happy with the tips that have been coming in.”

Jayme Closs has been located

On Thursday evening the Barron County Sheriff’s Department was notified by the Douglas CO WI Sheriff’s Department that they had located Jayme Closs alive.

Shortly after this a suspect was taken into custody in regards to this case. We do not any other details at this time as this is a very fluid and active investigation. We will not be answering any questions or taking calls on this tonight.

We are planning a press briefing approximately 10 am tomorrow at the Sheriff’s Department in Barron. We are receiving support from the FBI and WI DCI agents as this investigation continues.

We want to thank the Douglas Co Sheriff’s Department and agencies assisting them tonight. We also want to thank all the Law Enforcement agencies across the state and county that have assisted us in this case. We also could not have endured this case without the support of the public and I want to thank them for all the support and help.

Finally we want to especially thank the family for their support and patience while this case was ongoing. We promised to bring Jayme home and tonight we get to fulfill that promise. From the bottom of my heart THANK YOU!

This case has been very trying on the family so please respect their privacy and we reunite them later tonight.

Jayme Closs, a teenager who disappeared in Wisconsin last October, has been found alive and a suspect has been taken into custody, officials said Thursday.

Closs, 13, was discovered Thursday by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department, the Barron County Sheriff's Department, which led the search for Closs, wrote on Facebook.

Douglas County is roughly 80 miles north of Barron County.

Authorities, who said a suspect was taken into custody shortly after Closs was found, noted they "do not have any other details at this time as this is a very fluid and active investigation."

The announcement, which was posted online around 8 p.m., came just hours after the sheriff's office wrote in a separate post that Closs was "has NOT been located-this is false news."

Jayme Closs, the teenage girl who has been missing since her parents were found fatally shot in their Barron County, Wisconsin home on Oct. 15, was located alive Thursday in Douglas County, according to the Barron County Sheriff's Department.

In a statement, the department also said a suspect has been taken into custody.

A release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said Closs was located in Gordon, Wisconsin at 4:43 p.m., and a suspect was taken into custody at 4:54 p.m., also in Gordon.

Denise's sister Jennifer Naiberg Smith said Closs was being checked out at a hospital in Duluth, but authorities said she was expected to be on her way back home later Thursday night. She said they don't believe Closs is injured.

She profusely thanked everyone who helped out and kept hope alive, and said the family is focused on supporting Jayme, knowing she will need them.

And she hopes now the family can get justice for her sister and brother-in-law.

Closs' grandfather, Robert Naiberg, also said the family was overjoyed.

"Everybody is so happy," he told McDonough. "We can't believe it."

Sue Allard, Jayme’s aunt, overwhelmed and crying tears of joy could barely express her joy after learning the news Thursday night.“Praise the Lord,” she said in between sobs. “It’s the news we’ve been waiting on for three months. I can’t wait to get my arms around her. I just can’t wait.”

Allard said she and other family members didn’t have a lot of details but were asked by authorities not to say too much about what they did know. She confirmed that Jayme was found alive somewhere near Duluth.

Earlier Thursday evening, Fitzgerald knocked down a rumor spreading on social media that Jayme had been found in Walworth County, in southeastern Wisconsin after people reported a large police presence there.

“That was just fake stuff that was out there,” said Jayme’s grandfather, Robert Naiberg. But the news he got about 7 p.m. is real, he said.

“All I know is that they got her and that they’re checking her out at a hospital.” She’ll be reunited with some family members after that, he said.

But he likely won’t get to see her until Friday. “I’m going to hug her. Squeeze her,” Naiberg said, his voice cracking.

Douglas County, WI – The Barron County Sheriff’s Department says Jayme Closs has been located alive in Gordon, Wisconsin.

According Douglas County Sheriff, she was found at 4:43 p.m. Thursday and a suspect was taken into custody at 4:54 p.m., also in the Town of Gordon.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Department notified the Barron County Sheriff’s Department that a suspect was taken into custody in regards to this case.

WCCO-TV’s Mary McGuire spoke to Jayme’s aunt Sue on Thursday evening, who said her niece was currently in the hospital. Jayme will then be brought home to Barron to be reunited with her family.

Jayme Closs found alive: 'It's what we've prayed for'

"I mean I’m shocked," said Jayme's aunt, Kelly Engelhardt. "It's what we’ve prayed for every single day."

Closs, 13, has been missing since Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, when her parents were found murdered at their Barron, Wisconsin home.

When investigators entered the home off Highway 8 they found the bodies of James and Denise Closs, but there was no sign of their daughter.

Closs was found at Eau Claire Acres, a small development about six miles east of Gordon, Wisconsin on Highway Y, according to the Eau Claire Board chairman.

"I honestly had faith," Engelhardt said. "I figured if they hadn’t found her by now that the person that did this didn’t want her dead, so I had hope. Every day there was hope. We had too much love and support around us for us to give up."

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department in Wisconsin notified the Barron County Sheriff's Department on Thursday that they had located Jayme alive.

She was found Thursday afternoon in Gordon, Wisconsin, a town about 66 miles north of where Jayme was last seen, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office said.

A suspect was taken into custody about 10 minutes after authorities found Jayme, the sheriff's office said.

No more details were immediately available but authorities have said they will hold a news conference Friday morning.

Jayme's aunt, Sue Allard, said her niece was in the hospital Thursday night.
"There was rumors earlier today, and I prayed and prayed, and they come to not be true," Allard told CNN affiliate WCCO reporter Mary McGuire. "And I just shut myself totally down. I thought today was going to be the day, and then I find out two hours later that she's found and I just cannot believe this."

Three people east of Gordon, Wis., described the dramatic moments when the 13-year-old was found almost three months after she disappeared, dirty with matted hair, wearing shoes too big.

Residents of an area of woods and cabins about 9 miles east of Gordon, which has few year-round residents, described the dramatic moments when Jayme was found. KK, a teacher at the nearby Northwood School who lives on South Eau Claire Circle with her husband, P, and children, said that around 4 p.m., another neighbor walking a dog frantically knocked on the Ks’ door.

Standing with her was a skinny, dirty girl with matted hair, wearing shoes too big for her feet.

“This is Jayme Closs! Call 911!” the neighbor said to K's.

Jayme was quiet, her emotions “pretty flat,” PK said.

“I honestly still think I’m dreaming right now. It was like I was seeing a ghost,” Peter Kasinskas said. “It was scary and awesome at the same time. My jaw just went to the floor.”

The woman who found Jayme asked that her name not be used, saying she was exhausted and unnerved by the dramatic events of the day. In a phone interview late Thursday, she said that Jayme “came up to me and said she wanted help.”


She said she was pretty sure who the girl was, adding that most everyone who lives in Wisconsin has seen Jayme’s photo on the news or on posters hung up by businesses.


Any doubt the woman had was erased when Jayme gave her name. The two quickly made their way to the nearest home — that of Kasinskases’.


In the 20 minutes Jayme was in their home, the Kasinskases tried to make her feel more comfortable, they said. They offered her water and food, but she declined both. Kristin introduced Jayme to their new puppy, Penny.


Jayme told the Kasinskases that she didn’t know where she was or anything about Gordon. From what she told them, they believe she was there for most of her disappearance.


“I honestly still think I’m dreaming right now. It was like I was seeing a ghost,” PK said. “It was scary and awesome at the same time. My jaw just went to the floor.”

For their part, authorities declined to release any details late Thursday, but plan a 10 a.m. Friday news conference in Barron County.

Jayme disappeared Oct. 15 from her rural home about 2 miles outside of Barron, where her parents, James and Denise, were found shot to death. She had not been seen or heard from since. Several intensive searches took place in the area, but none yielded any clues, and for weeks Fitzgerald has been saying that authorities have no new leads.

Everywhere, tears of joy

Pamela Currans, who was working the Thursday night shift at the Subway in town, said she never gave up hope. “I stayed positive,” she said. “I knew she would be found alive.”

When she learned the news, Currans said she cried. “Tears of joy,” she quickly added. “This is very awesome.”
