Minnesota parents wonder how to react after terrifying Jayme Closs kidnapping
It’s nearly impossible for parents to not have a visceral fear reaction to incidents like Closs’ abduction, said Bill Doherty, professor of family social science at the University of Minnesota.

“The first law of parenting in our minds is: Keep them safe,” he said.

And the way our brains process information can exacerbate these hard-wired worries. Mental shortcuts cause us to remember the most sensational incidents, said Lenore Skenazy, author of the book “Free-Range Kids.”

As an example, Skenazy said, after learning that Closs’ alleged abductor first spotted her at a school bus stop, our brains tend to associate her shocking story with children’s safety at bus stops, instead of focusing on the millions of kids who take buses every day without incident.

Statistically speaking, the risk of a child being abducted by a stranger is exceedingly low: There are just over 100 stereotypical kidnappings in the U.S. each year.

Children are far more likely to be abducted or harmed by someone they know. About 90 percent of adults who abuse children are family members or acquaintances. Everyday hazards, including car accidents and falls, pose the greatest risk to young people and are their leading cause of injury and death.

Authorities examine cellphone of alleged Wisconsin kidnapper
Wisconsin authorities have examined call logs, photos and videos stored on the cellphone of the man accused of kidnapping a 13-year-old girl and killing her parents, according to court documents filed Tuesday.

The search warrant documents filed in Barron County Circuit Court don't reveal the nature of the photos and videos stored on the phone of 21-year-old Jake Patterson , who is charged with killing James and Denise Closs on Oct. 15 and kidnapping their daughter, Jayme Closs. But the documents said evidence on the phone could be used "to determine the chronological context" of what happened.

According to a search warrant affidavit, the red Ford Taurus Patterson was driving was taped up and taken to a secure evidence garage. The FBI's evidence response team searched the car the next day and found his cellphone on the front seat.

The documents said authorities were looking for a contact list, a log of incoming and outgoing calls and the dates and times of those calls, texts or other messages and social media communications. They were also seeking emails that were sent to or from the cellphone, evidence that would tell them where the phone was during their months-long investigation, and any pictures or videos on the device.

Can Jake Patterson get a fair trial in the explosive Jayme Closs case?
“It will be pretty tough to get (an impartial) jury anywhere” in Wisconsin, said Milwaukee attorney Ray Dall’Osto. “It’s been pretty much branded on people’s minds.”

The case could be resolved short of trial with a plea deal, or by a guilty plea to the murder and kidnapping charges. Patterson, a 21-year-old unemployed man who was discharged from the Marines five weeks into boot camp because of "character issues," also could enter a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.

“If there is going to be a trial, it will be on his mental status,” said former Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice Janine Geske. “I can’t imagine they will try it on the facts.”

“I could certainly imagine a defense lawyer arguing that Mr. Patterson cannot receive a fair trial at this point,” said Michael O’Hear, a professor at the Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee. “Publicity about the case has been quite intense. It will probably be hard to find jurors in Barron County who have not heard something about the case, either from the mainstream media, or social media — or just from casual conversation with friends and neighbors.”

O’Hear said cases involving a horrific crime and extensive pretrial publicity may expose potential jurors to information that is not allowed to be used as evidence at trial.

“Ideally, jurors should be basing their decisions only on admissible evidence. Confessions can be a big problem in this regard. Sometimes, a confession is ruled inadmissible for one reason or another by a judge before trial," he said. "However, if jurors are aware from media coverage that a defendant has confessed, it may be hard for them to disregard that fact.”

Decision not to charge Jake Patterson in Douglas County aims to spare Jayme Closs more trauma
“You look at the seriousness of what you’re initially going to charge and you weigh it against the continued trauma to a young victim…and you make a decision," said Joe DeCecco, a former district attorney in Sheboygan County.

Sometimes it's not possible to spare a crime victim from trial proceedings, DeCecco said, but it can be done if the case is strong enough to get a conviction without that testimony. And prosecutors will do what they can to be sensitive to the needs of a child or vulnerable crime victim.

DeCecco said it's also important to consider the wishes of the victim and the victim's family, because sharing their story in court can be difficult.”

Gordon Beyond Patterson: Part One
"It totally blew everybody's mind here," said DK, the bartender at the nearby Bootlegger's Bar & Grill, "Nobody had any inkling that she could've been in Gordon."

Patterson attended the local school district from kindergarten to graduation, but those outside of his class didn't know much about the 21-year-old. "I've never seen him in (Bootlegger's) and we've had this place for 18 years," continued Knowlton.

It hasn't been a month since Patterson's arrest, but with the crime scene cleared and news trucks gone, residents say they're ready to move on. After all, when you peel back the layers of the national spotlight, the Town of Gordon is much more than just one bad egg.

"Going out to eat is fun here," says TW, a wrestling coach at the local Northwood School District. "There's a good variety of food. Believe it or not, the pizza around here is great."

"Wintertime snowmobilers, summertime four-wheelers, that's where most of the business comes from," said Knowlton.

DR, a local business owner at Northwoods Heating & Cooling, claims there's more to Gordon than meets the eye. "Locals up here will call it God's country, and that's what this is, it's God's country," he says. "We just love the area (and the) environment."

Yes, there's certainly a lot to love about the Town of Gordon, but if there's anything to take away from this small community, it's the people who make it God's country.

Community celebrates Jayme Closs' safe return home
The man accused of kidnapping Jayme Closs and killing her parents is due back in court Wednesday morning in Barron County.

Patterson’s preliminary hearing will be the first time he appears in person in a courtroom. A few weeks ago, Patterson made his initial court appearance via video conference per protocol in Barron County.

Patterson’s preliminary hearing offers him the opportunity to hear the evidence the state has gathered against him before deciding whether to take the case to trial. Prosecutors strongly believe Patterson will stand trial.

Patterson will have to be transported to the hearing from the Polk County Jail where he’s currently being held. The Barron County sheriff said Patterson was moved from the Barron County Jail because one of Jayme’s relatives works at the facility.

In a snowy downtown Barron, dozens of signs welcoming Jayme home haven’t come down nearly four weeks since Jayme escaped her abductor.

Court hearing today for man charged with kidnapping Jayme Closs and killing her parents
The man charged with kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs and killing her parents is scheduled to appear in a northwestern Wisconsin courtroom late Wednesday morning.

Jake T. Patterson, 21, remains jailed in Barron County in lieu of $5 million
bail on two counts of first-degree murder, and charges of kidnapping and armed burglary after allegedly targeting the Closs family home just outside the city of Barron on a late night in mid-October.

Wednesday’s hearing, scheduled to start at 11 a.m., is listed on the court calendar as a preliminary hearing, where prosecutors will attempt to establish grounds for a trial. Patterson, who is expected to be in the courtroom during the hearing, has yet to enter a plea to the charges. The criminal complaint filed against him says he confessed to the killings and kidnapping under questioning by a Barron County sheriff’s detective. What has yet to surface is a motive for the crimes.

A timeline of events in the Jayme Closs disappearance case
Notable events in the disappearance and discovery of Jayme Closs, a 13-year-old Wisconsin girl who went missing after her parents were killed in the family's home. Authorities say Jayme was found alive after being held captive for three months by a man who is now charged in her kidnapping and her parents' deaths.

Oct. 15, 2018 — James Closs, 56, and Denise Closs, 46, are found shot to death in their home in Barron, a town in western Wisconsin. Authorities issue an Amber Alert for 13-year-old Jayme Closs, and the search for her begins.

Oct. 16, 2018 — Investigators say they don't consider Jayme a suspect in her parents' deaths. Authorities also dismiss a tip placing Jayme's whereabouts in Miami as "not credible," and say they believe the girl is in danger.

Oct. 17, 2018 — Authorities announce that investigators believe Jayme was in her family's home when her parents were fatally shot.

Closs kidnapping, murder suspect due in court Wednesday for preliminary hearing
By: Paul Blume, FOX 9

While a trial may indeed be on the horizon, Wednesday will be just the next step in the criminal prosecution of Jake Patterson.

The 21-year-old murder and kidnapping suspect is expected in Barron County Court at 11 a.m. Wednesday for a preliminary hearing.

In Wisconsin, the preliminary hearing gives prosecutors the chance to lay out their case.

It typically involves the state calling the lead investigator to the witness stand to detail the evidence and the steps law enforcement took to apprehend the defendant.

Patterson’s legal team might challenge those statements apparently made to detectives in the hours after his arrest.

“They’ve not heard it. They don’t know. They haven’t heard the Miranda warning, whether Mr. Patterson was forced or coerced into making a statement. Ultimately, the admissibility of the statement or the confession could become grounds for a constitutional challenge later in the case, but it will be admitted tomorrow,” Nelson said.

FOX 9 reached out to Barron County's Office of the Public Defender, but his team will not be commenting on the proceedings.

Sheriff tells me gifts continue to pour into Barron for #JaymeCloss from all over. His office screens those packages & then delivers them to Jayme. Mentioned a home-made gift arriving from Italy this week. Her story is everywhere including the recent cover of People magazine.
