Accused Jayme Closs kidnapper Jake Patterson appears in court, waives preliminary hearing
Jake Patterson, accused of kidnapping Jayme Closs after murdering her parents, appeared in person Wednesday in Barron County Circuit Court and waived his preliminary hearing.

Patterson, who appeared before Barron County Circuit Judge James C. Babler, made his initial appearance Jan. 14 via video from the county jail.

In a preliminary hearing, a judge determines if there is probable cause that a felony was committed, and if it was committed by the person who prosecutors charged.

It's not uncommon for a defendant to waive the preliminary hearing. By doing so, Patterson acknowledged that there is enough evidence for a case to go forward without admitting guilt.

Patterson is scheduled to return to court for an arraignment hearing on March 27.

Suspect in Wisconsin teen's abduction ordered to stand trial
Patterson, wearing an orange jail jumpsuit and restraints, fidgeted during a proceeding that lasted less than five minutes, with Patterson speaking only to give yes-or-no answers to the judge's questions. It was the first time he appeared in court in person.

As he was leaving the courtroom, Patterson smiled and nodded at his father, Patrick Patterson, and said, "I love you." The elder Patterson responded, "I love you."

About 20 members of the Closs family attended. Neither they nor members of the Patterson family spoke to reporters afterward.

He betrayed no emotion as he confidently answered the judge's questions, determining that he had made his decision to not have a preliminary hearing 'knowingly, intelligently and voluntarily.'

By waiving his right to a preliminary hearing, Patterson's case will now go to trial.

Emotion flickered across Patterson's face as he was escorted past the row in which his father, sister Katie and brother Erik sat. 'Love you Jake,' his father said quietly.

Both Katie and Erik echoed him with the words, 'We love you' as the youngest of the three siblings shuffled past them in handcuffs and orange prison overalls.

His face contorted with a half smile, half grimace. For a moment he appeared on the verge of tears and then he was gone.

This is the first time that Patterson has appeared in person and stood in the same room as the relatives of the couple he is accused of murdering and the 13-year-old girl he kidnapped.

At 10.41am more than a dozen of Jayme's family members had filed silently into the courtroom. Earlier they had acknowledged it was 'going to be a hard day.'

They filled three of the four rows of benches. Patterson's family presence was meager by comparison.

Patterson's father quietly thanked the Sheriff's Deputy who had escorted them in, then placed a protective arm around his daughter's shoulder and held her close as they sat waiting for proceedings to start.

Proceedings lasted barely three minutes and the case will now go to trial. As he left the room Patterson's sister stifled a sob and his brother broke down in tears.

Following is a timeline of the life of Jake Patterson, the man accused of kidnapping teenager Jayme Closs after shooting her parents to death. Information was compiled from USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin reporting; court, real-estate and divorce records; and interviews with people who knew Patterson.

Dec. 30, 1989: Patrick Michael Patterson, then 26; marries Deborah Lynn Moyer, 20, in Superior. It's the first marriage for both.

April 23, 1992: They have their first child, daughter Katie Lynn.

June 24, 1994: Deborah Patterson gives birth to a son, Erik James.

Oct. 30, 2007: The couple file jointly for divorce, saying in a hand-written petition their union is “irretrievably broken.” They agree to split the cost of raising the kids, and Patrick agrees to insure them with a plan he has through his employer, an electrical supply company.

Late 2007-early 2008: Deborah moves to a duplex on the south side of Minong, a Washburn County village of 527 about 12 miles from the family home in Gordon.

March 31, 2008: A judge grants the divorce. The couple agrees to share physical custody every other week; Patrick is expected pay Deborah $800 a month in child support until Jake turns 18. Patrick agrees to buy Deborah's share of the house for $40,000.

Oct. 28, 2013: Erik Patterson is arrested in Douglas County on charges including two low-level felonies accusing him of manufacturing or delivering THC, as well as a bail-jumping misdemeanor. He later pleads no contest and is convicted. His Buffalo County probation is revoked; he's given an eight-month jail sentence.

Late May, 2015: Jake Patterson and 33 classmates graduate from Northwood. He skips the senior class trip, prom and class photo.

Sept. 14, 2015: Patterson arrives at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, after enlisting in a recruiting office in Rice Lake.

Oct. 20, 2015: The Marine Corps kicks Patterson out of basic training five weeks into a 13-week program.

2016: Patterson takes a job at the Jennie-O Turkey Store in Barron. He quits a day later.

Early October, 2018: Patterson continues to live at South Eau Claire Acres. His father has moved out.

Oct. 3 and 4: Patterson works two days at Saputo Cheese near Almeda, then quits. On one trip to work, he stops behind a school bus on U.S. 8, sees Jayme get on, and decides to kidnap her, according to a criminal complaint. He makes two trips to her house in Barron to conduct the kidnapping. But when he sees cars in the area, he loses his nerve.

Oct. 15, 2018: Just before 1 a.m., authorities say, Patterson, head shaven, face covered by a mask, and carrying a 12-gauge shotgun, kills Jayme’s 56-year-old father, James, with a blast through the front door. He then shoots his way into the house and fatally shoots Jayme’s mother Denise, 46, after kicking down the door to the bathroom where she and Jayme had hidden. He forces the girl, bound and with her mouth taped shut, into the trunk of his car.

Oct. 15-Jan. 10: Patterson holds Jayme captive in the house in Gordon, about an hour and 20 minutes north of the Closs house, according to a criminal complaint. He forces her to stay under a bed when he leaves and when his father visits, placing weighted containers around the bed to prevent escape, the complaint states.

Patterson, who will be arraigned next month on charges of killing James and Denise Closs with shotgun blasts and kidnapping Jayme, their 13-year-old daughter, is narcissistic but also a loner with a spotty work record, criminologists and violent crime experts say.

Investigators, profilers, and researchers who have interviewed or studied killers with multiple victims believe Patterson’s case is unusual in several other respects:

• Patterson told detectives that he carefully plotted the crimes, yet he was impulsive in some of his actions and decisions.
• While it was regarded as a crime against a stranger because Patterson, according to the complaint, had no relationship with the Closs family, it wasn’t completely random because he targeted Jayme after he saw her getting on a school bus near her Barron home weeks before attacking her family.
• Patterson unmercifully killed Jayme’s parents, prosecutors say, but he spared Jayme, drove her away from the murder scene and held her captive for three months before she escaped.

“This is outside the norm,” said Gregg McCrary, a former special agent with the FBI who had a long association with the National Center for the Analysis of Violent Crime and was among the early criminal profilers.

James and Denise Closs were victims of Patterson’s fantasy to take and keep Jayme, McCrary said.

“When guys do this sort of thing, anybody who gets between them and their target is in peril,” he said. “That’s his desire, and he is willing to kill. This is someone with no guilt, no remorse, no empathy. He killed these people with the empathy of lighting a cigarette.”

McCrary also sees signs of narcissism in Patterson. He noted that, when stopped by police on Jan. 10, he said, “I did it” and went on to say in his confession that he assumed he had gotten away with his crimes and claimed he never would have been caught if he had planned the abduction “perfectly," the complaint said.

"He talks about being criminally sophisticated and his efforts at not being detected. He likes to brag about it, which is extremely pathological,” McCrary said. “He thinks he’s smarter than anybody else. He was just getting off on this. He had this secret, which reinforces his feelings. He has a captive in the house and appears to lead a normal life.

“It’s the narcissism that often is their vulnerability, such as the confidence to go out and leave (Jayme) alone. He got overconfident in his ability to maintain this.”

Patterson’s actions, outlined in the complaint, before the mayhem at the Closs residence were not typical of most killers, said Kim Rossmo, director of the Center for Geospatial Intelligence and Investigation in the Department of Criminal Justice at Texas State University.

Although other major crimes share aspects of Patterson’s case — premeditating, planning, avoiding detection and erupting in deadly violence — the combination of these behaviors in the Jayme Closs abduction is outside the norm.

“All of these things have happened in other cases, but this one is different because he did so many of them,” she said.

Six weeks until next Patterson court date
For the next six weeks a preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 6, that lasted less than five minutes is likely to be the last official public reference to a double murder and kidnapping in rural Barron last October, the alleged imprisonment of a 13-year-old girl, her unexpected escape, and the arrest of her alleged captor.

So far as the prosecution is concerned, the preliminary hearing will be the last public pronouncement of any sort, a spokesperson for the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office said Monday, Feb. 11.

“We will have no comment on what will take place before the arraignment takes place,” Rebecca Ballweg, deputy director of communications and public affairs, said during a phone interview.

Until his next court date, Patterson will be held at the Polk County Jail. Barron jail officials said it was “an administrative decision” to move him to the jail at Balsam Lake, but also confirmed that a relative of the Closs family is a member of the Barron County Jail staff.

Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said it will cost $40 per day to house Patterson at the jail in Balsam Lake, Wis.

“But we expect to offset (that cost) with money we take in from housing inmates from Burnett and Washburn (counties),” he said.

“I think one of the unusual aspects was the fact that he didn’t kill his victim within 24 hours. That’s pretty standard,” said Rossmo, the former detective inspector in charge of the Vancouver Police Department's Geographic Profiling Section.

Rossmo also noted that while authorities say Patterson plotted the crime, he changed course as circumstances arose.

“In a way it’s a complication more than a necessity," he said of the murders of Jayme’s parents. “Given his planning, it was unusual to go into the home (without knowing who was there). Maybe he couldn’t wait.”

Now, she and her family has reached out to WDIO News to release a statement they want to be shared with everyone.

Jayme greatly appreciates each and every gift, as well as the many cards and letters. The many kind words have been a source of great comfort to her. "

Finding normalcy one month after Jayme Closs' brave escape
Just over one month since Jayme Closs' brave escape from suspect, Jake Patterson’s home in Gordon, the Barron County community is coming together to continue the healing process.

Saturday morning, "Our Resilient Community," a seminar focusing on grief and loss, was held at the Barron Area Community Center.

In an intimate space, community members were invited to listen and talk with grief expert Kal Rissman.

Rissman said during the seminar he wanted to emphasize that life is a series of growths and losses, and that when tragedies like this strike, it's important to grieve properly.

“What I'm hoping for Barron, Wisconsin is that this horrible tragedy is something that people grieve well and they come out the other side more resilient, more willing to get the most out of every day they have with people,” says Rissman.

Sheriff Fitzgerald says the sheriff’s office has been helping the Closs family by screening gifts. He adds there’s been an overwhelming amount of support for Jayme.

The letter also described how Patterson hated himself for what he did, but he acknowledged his family still supports him. He also reportedly wrote that “not a single” person has sent him hate mail, unless the letters were thrown out by authorities before he could read them.

“I went from never committing a crime or really doing anything bad to doing the worst thing a human can do. Just one big f–k up ha ha.”
