Why are Websleuthers sleuthing a family member of the accused? Isn’t that a violation of the WS rules?

Not sure which posts are being referred to, but there is a difference between discussing what is said in MSM about an individual and actual sleuthing.

If, for example, the sheriff says "we are looking into X individual's background", (where X is not an officially named POI or suspect) then it is okay to say that the sheriff said it and to speculate within reason as to what that might mean in relation to the case. This is not sleuthing.

It is NOT okay to sleuth out (search out, dig for) personal information about any family member or individual who has not been officially named a POI or suspect and post about it here (i.e. he lives at 123 ABC Street, his licence plate is blah blah, he has 57 kids from a previous relationship, etc).

I seem to be unable to quote in replies, but thank you for posting the TOS, not.a.muggle. Since the brother has been mentioned in the press and by the police, I don't know if that changes things, as opposed to posters going out and finding him.

I'll stop discussing him if it's potentially against the rules. I don't think there's anything relevant to be found there anyway.
I had a post deleted for referencing the brother so I'm assuming that's a no

Is there such a thing as sealing particular charges? Is there no protection/privacy for minors in these types of cases? MOO

Not really. They can seal charges when the perp is a minor or very controversially (and unconstitutionally, it appears to me) in some federal cases when it is felt that revealing charges can lead to a larger case being destroyed and/or the public harmed because revealing charges would lead other perps to get wise to an on-going investigation.

For the most part we don't have secret trials in this country. We are not Iran or the Philippines.

Democracy demands that charges be public.

I still remember Shasta and Dylan Groene's father yelling at spectators in the courtroom and calling them pedophiles during the trial against his son's murderer, because the prosecution was about to show video of his son being sexually tortured by Duncan and he wanted the "audience" to leave.

I don't blame him. How horrible.

But the judge did not allow a closed courtroom.

Ah yes. I'll bet he told Jayme. He told her his name so he probably told her how he planned and went about everything. It just surprises me he didn't take better care of her, cleanliness, food and all.
I wonder about this as well. Keeping someone in captivity could result in either taking extra good care of the victim, for whatever reasons - he really cared for her (if he is capable). Or keeping her submissive and dependent on him - dirty, hungry, locked up. She would need to comply with the situation in order to receive food, shower. etc. OR, he simple didn't give a crap about her needs, as long as he had her with him - his goal of capturing someone had been complete. All my opinions, but somewhat based on the possibilities.

I'm guessing that they assumed he was an intelligent normal person who would be fine living on his own. It looks like he wanted to be on his own so he could live out a fantasy of keeping a girl captive.

Ah, I can quote again!

Except that the property was transferred to the bank with him apparently still in the house, and after the brother moved out. I wonder if they notified him they were dumping the property and he stayed on anyway, or if they didn't know he was there in the first place. I think there's some weirdness with the house arrangement, in that the parents and JTP may not have been on the same page.

Did his parents even know he was there?

Yay for Jayme, she's home! I for one am proud of her for having the courage to take an opportunity to escape and win her freedom. She is a survivor which will serve her well on her road to recovery.

Seems like the thread is slipping off into IDK what. Will check back.
Odd, isn't it? It's almost as if the best possible outcome to this story didn't just happen...

Sheriff stated in PC that JP had been planning this for some time

I hope in time we will know why he chose Jayme, where he first saw her etc.

Unfortunately if JP is the only one who knows this then it's up to him to confess to those details...& he may not.....
The question is, was he planning an abduction for a long time or was he planning to abduct Jayme for a long time. He may have been planning the crime for a long time, but made the decision to grab Jayme that day.

Just a general observation from me, sparked by conflicting/different information from various neighbours interviewed about JP & the property where JC was kept:

We’re starting to run across a really annoying media trait which I’ve seen in other cases. Instead of new articles with each piece of new information, they edit and update earlier ones and original information/interviews disappear.

Current example: very early reports quoted A Neighbour (I recall it being one of the people involved in the rescue) who mentioned “comings and goings” at the property, but no time frame was specified (I.e. we don’t know whether this was during JC’s captivity, or just a general observation). I’m still searching for the link, with no joy.

Then there’s Another (different) Neighbour quoted, link still available https://www.google.ca/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/2547549002
saying they didn’t know anyone was living at the property.

This likely doesn’t matter to the vast majority of people, but it’s really frustrating for people like WSers who like detail, facts, sources.

All we really know is that at some point his parents moved away and left him behind. I'm assuming that they did this with the belief that he would be fine on his own. Apparently they were wrong.
I am curious about that, because I believe what I read had said the parents had moved away a few years ago... but yet today the accused is age 21.. so at what age did they leave him to his own devices?

Jayme told the people who took her in after her escape that she would be hidden when he had people over or when he left. It's in their interviews.
So he had people over, friends. In another article it said no one in town really knew him or that he was living there. He must have known some people because someone was coming to the house, unless it was his family.

I had wondered this same thing.

At first, it was the two brothers living there after the remaining parent moved out, and the brother is older. At some point that I don't know, the brother seems to have moved to CO and JTP was there alone.

In another article it was said that LE has been interviewing his friends, family and neighbors.
