I remember a case where an adult son came into his parents house in the night and shot them with a shotgun. The mother was shot in the face but was (surprisingly to the responding officers) still alive. They said they couldn't even put an oxygen mask on her because they didn't know where her mouth was. She managed to say her son shot them but after the surgeries and recovery she had no memory and denied that he was involved.
Yes -- I remember this case because it was so strange: Son comes home from Univ, shoots his Dad early morning while he's in the kitchen and goes after his Mum still in bed. Dad so shocked and disoriented he actually went to front porch to collect the newspaper and then collapsed dead. Mum still denies her Son involved!

Time -- perhaps the perp realized a phone call was made or wanted a quick in and out minimizing time seen at the location. Take Jayme to a different location to eliminate potential DNA in the house, and have more time to do unmentionables. MOO

Could be. Although, I don't think a gun shot would take longer than it would to abduct a girl. Unless of course they planned to do the unmentionables, as you said.

I'm not buying the "he answered the door" scenario. It's midnight on a school night. James just got off work. I'd assume Denise and Jayme are asleep. Someone comes to the door, and James just answers it? Maybe I'm exceptionally cautious, but if someone comes to my door at midnight, I'm not going anywhere near it.

If Closs didn't answer the door, then why was his body found by the door?

There's a Barron city water waste department. I'd wager that house is on city water/sewer.
The Closs home is located outside the city limits of the city of Barron in what is known as the Town of Barron (effectively in Wisconsin a "town" is what is known as a "township" elsewhere). This is also why the Barron County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the call rather than the Barron City Police.

Question for Wisconsin residents.

Does the Wisconsin State Police handle criminal matters or just traffic?

Does the county where this crime happened have a police/sheriffs department and if so do they have jurisdiction in this case?

Does Wisconsin have a State Bureau of Investigations?

What “outside” agencies came to town to help out?

Maybe "he" wanted THIS particular girl and psyched himself up to do anything including murder to get her. That would fit the facts -- the few that we have. If he was that obsessed maybe he's keeping her alive. But obviously to do that, he must have some isolated place to hold her. That's why I'm thinking remote homestead or farm. To the east are the Blue Hills. South are remote valleys. West and north is forested. Thousands of remote homes, etc.

So, here would be one scenario for which to apply a potential profile.

Assuming this scenario as possibility, and it is a strong one, imo, what possible specifical characteristically/profile aspects/elements would you cite?
@human and anyone who cares to answer, thanks for your input.

I keep reading Herbster when I look at your name.

Highway 8 has 6000 cars a day according to a poster who found that info on a website. I cannot remember who the poster was or the site.

Anyway, as you know, Barron is close to Rice Lake. Rice Lake is on 53 which connects to the ability to go to Chicago or Minneapolis or Duluth and points north. Or it will connect to 35 which brings one to Texas.

I have been on 53 many times going to visit a friend in Milwaukee. I cannot remember when the semi traffic gets intense, but there are a lot of vehicles somewhere south of Rice Lake.

I doubt if it is a semi driver. A truck parked by their house would be memorable to someone.

When I drove those roads, I always wonderd why someone would live in the middle of nowhere down a long driveway.
It seemed so scary with anyone simply driving by.

For some bizarro killer as OBE has posted over and over, a house at midnight on a Sunday night would seem like an easy kill.

Since the Short killer has never been found, we don’t know if he observed the family, It seems like Duncan watched the family.

Did some random perp watch the family?

If the person is not from the area, what do they use for money to eat and buy gas? Do they sleep in their car or where does someone like Dumcan stay?

All of that makes me think it's an area person. Seems too planned to be a random out of Towner.

Obituary for James and Denise Closs at Rausch & Steel Funeral Home

Hi PommyMommy. Do you happen to have quick/handy links to photos of the doors? One in particular I'm trying to find is the one that appears to be wood, possible damage on the side, that was leaning inside the doorway while police were still processing evidence. I think it was a still shot from a news video.

If Closs didn't answer the door, then why was his body found by the door?

Lots of possibilities there. He might have heard a noise and just was standing near it. Or just happened to be there for another reason. The only way I see him answering the door is if he thought he knew who it was.

That's one of my scenarios. He might have been a very trusting soul and opened the door. After all some folks in some rural areas of the country don't even lock their doors at night.

Otherwise, maybe Mr. Closs - wondering who would be at his door after midnight - might have asked who it was and the killer shot through the door prior to kicking it in.

Yes, although some have said that kicking in a door isn't easy.

I'm still pondering on the Sheriff's remark 'killers' from Fox 9's interview on Thursday. If 2 perps were involved in the crime, then where would that leave Jayme now? Its awful enough if one person abducted her but the possibility of two sends shudders down my spine. And if it is two then who is it? Two males? Two females? One male, one female? I just wish they could find Jayme now to put an end to this nightmare for her and her family.

I'm not sure if I buy it either yet, but would you still not buy it even if he knew whoever was at the door?

Been wracking my brain, trying to figure how not only one (quite distinctive muscle car, but another regular everyday car) could disappear so quick.
Here's what I have so far.
1: maybe hiden in an auto body shop.
2: could be someone with a garage, and under the table business, car painting, detailing, soupING up,or moding type thing.
3: the cars are hidden in a storage unit.
4: it could be a car hobbyist, collector, with multi car garage.

5. Cars (particularly the Challenger) are from well out of town (somewhere like Chicago) where no one is thinking about this case.

I remember seeing that one ~ unfortunately, I do not have it. If I come across it, I'll save it next time! MOO

A seemingly mild person on the surface but capable of extreme acts like murder, but who also likes small dogs and children. No violent criminal record. Is that what you mean?

Finally am caught up on this thread and am disappointed there is no info out yet and no announced progress. Sad, but this case just seems unique in all the different possible scenarios that could have possibly played out. But until we get more facts released, hopefully soon, don't know what else to say as I see no reason to change my original thoughts until I have some concrete facts to work with. One thing is I plan to go to Rice Lake in a week so I am looking forward to just get the pulse of so many of my friends, relatives, classmates, etc just to get their gut feeling. Although I never knew any Closs, Denise wasn't even born when I left for the military and James would have only been 6 years old, it is a very small, close-knit, friendly area so I am interested in what the locals are thinking. I will be there til after Thanksgiving. I hope and pray every day this case will be resolved shortly.
Don't know if you've seen the latest update by Sheriff [Nov 1]. Sheriff reports that the 911 call is still being enhanced and analyzed, interviews for family and Jayme's electronic footprint complete, and "if they find killers, they find Jayme." Looking forward to your report after you've talked with locals -- and especially if they believe more than one perp involved. Safe travels.

If Closs didn't answer the door, then why was his body found by the door?

Maybe the person didn't even knock. Maybe the perp(s) kicked in the door and James ran out to see what the noise was? Perhaps a brief struggle ensued and James was shot in the doorway. He seems like he was a big man and he had a family to protect. I can't see him running back into the bedroom if someone had just kicked in the door in a surprise attack. JMO.

BTW, did you happen to know the family Herb?
(Just wondering since your user name has Wis in it and you are calling James by his last name in a familiar way).

I'm not sure if I buy it either yet, but would you still not buy it even if he knew whoever was at the door?

I would then. And that would suggest the person called out or otherwise made themselves known. Everything about this case points to it being someone who knew them.

Can't speak to the Wisconsin agencies but we do know that FBI was immediately involved as Sheriff reported that FBI was responsible for an exception for Amber alert which case did not otherwise qualify. The crime mobile unit on the scene was also said to belong to FBI. MOO
