Kristen Smith, 31, who is reportedly Marshall’s half-sister, was also at the home but reportedly left in the early-morning hours before Kayden was reported missing, according to WQOW.
Smith, who is from Denver, Colorado, was arrested at the and Go along Interstate 80 in West Branch at about 5:30 a.m. according to KCRG. Police said she had an outstanding warrant for alleged tampering with government records in Texas. Police also said Smith was a person of interest in baby Kayden’s disappearance.

Which means someone else had to have been caring for that baby overnight. It was too cold for the baby to have survived more than 30 minutes with these bitter below zero temps.


How many people knew where KS was in IA? Someone had to have known about her IA location and moved the baby to the gas station this morning. I don't have a good feeling about who I think might have been involved with KS. In fact, it kind of makes me want to throw up. I hope I am wrong, and I hope LE is able to make an arrest or arrests quickly.

Guys, it is so cold here right now in the midwest (in michigan we are at -7 and it was -17 this morning).

I say "attempted Murder" if that turns out to be the case.

While this all seems to point to KS, I am going to play Devil's Advocate here for a second. 24h seems like a LONG time for a baby to be out in the cold, especially when he can't regulate this temperature. It would be unlikely his cries would go unheard so long at a gas station with people coming and going. Is it possible someone had him in their home and in the night or sometime this morning traveled to where KS was to drop him knowing she is the POI? Or KS handed him off and then the person keeping him decided to put him where he would likely be found?

I really hope there is video surveillance. And thank God that baby is okay!

I'm pretty much thinking the same thing as you. I went out last night to smoke a cig and was only out there for a few min and I was frezzing. I don't know how a baby could survive that. And even if he had blanket and all that I would think he would suffocate.

I'm just going to wait and see what LE has to say but I think a lot more then we know about is going to come into play here as far as someone els being involved.

Hopefully now that Kayden has been recovered, KS will tell all.

Thoughts......1. KS dropped baby at BP then met LE across the street at & Go. She didn't think she'd be arrested, thought she'd just be interviewed, grab the baby and be on her way. My biggest concern with this is I don't think Kayden could have survived the cold, no one saw/heard him until LE searched there this morning.

2. Accomplice didn't know which gas station KS was arrested at, dropped Kayden at the one across the street from where KS was arrested.

3. KS wasn't involved, real kidnapper dropped baby at gas station not knowing which one KS was arrested at.

Kayden was found across the street from where KS was arrested, yet LE didn't think the check there yesterday?

IMO- I would also check local motels to see if anyone who knows her was staying there, she could have planned this whole thing and had someone waiting at a local hotel/motel and that is the person who left the baby there? Just throwing it out there. Again, IMO

God Bless little Kayden for screaming his little lungs out. Had he not this story could have had a much more grim outcome. Unless KS has an accomplice the little man had surely been there since right before LE made contact with her at the gas station.

Wisconsin authorities say Kayden Powell was found at 10:15 a.m. Friday. FBI acting special agent G.B. Jones said at a news conference the officer heard the newborn crying and discovered the child swaddled in a tote bag outside a gas station. Authorities say the child appears to be in good condition.

Does it say anywhere what time LE heard crying? Is it possible he had been found before the scheduled press conference?

So glad he's been found! I just don't understand this. Are we sure that the duffel bag was outside? There is no way that tiny baby could survive for 24 hours in a duffle bag outside. I don't think an adult could survive that. I also don't think that a 6 pound baby would be in "good condition" after not eating for 24 hours. That's a very long time for someone so tiny! When he started to get hungry he would be crying. A lot No one heard this? I really want to hear more about exactly where he was found. If the sister has been in custody for 24 hours I worry that someone set this up to look like it was her.

The two gas stations are .4 miles apart. KS was arrested at & Go, and the baby was found at BP across the interstate.

Hatfield's link said "Police said she had an outstanding warrant for alleged tampering with government records in Texas." This tells me A) this is from her time in the military. Her Facebook states she was in VA "I have four kids and I'm in the army you do what's best in the long run.
December 3, 2012 at 4:11pm" That same day she posted that she got promoted and jumped two spots, next step is Commissioned Officer. That seemed hinky to me, I don't know how someone would advance so quickly. Maybe she somehow messed with her records... but not sure why that would have a Texas connection.

ETA: Hubby (Army Vet) explained to me by jumping two spots could have meant she went from #3 to #1 on the waiting list of people to be promoted, not actual ranks like I was assuming, so this is actually possible.

Can someone find the interview where BM's mother said KS came and got all of BM's things?

Does anyone have the link? Kind of odd, was BM with KS when she got these things? OR did KS go to BM's mothers house by herself to get these belongings?

Even without the frigid temps, he could have suffocated.

I, too, wonder who Kristen Smith really is, is she really Brianna's step sister? Is she really from CO? What plates did she have on her car? IL? Is she married? Does she have kids?

It appears that her hubby has family in Colorado, but I can't figure out where they actually live right now. She has all of the Chicago sports teams listed in her "likes", fwiw. She also appears to have children, but right now it's not known if they are biological or step-children.

Brianna mentioned Colorado on her twitter back in September. KS' husband seems connected to Denver, and papers say she lived in Denver. But the nearest Army Base is in Colorado Springs, an hour and a half away. Not sure if maybe she left the service, or if one/both commute.
