This is what parents want and fear. We are desperate for our children to find the connection that they need to move them in the positive direction we want for them, and fear that every connection is an opportunity to negatively direct, exploit or abuse a trusting and vulnerable child. This is true.
In my school we received training on what to look for regarding gang symbols and insignia.
If we saw anything in their notebooks or elsewhere, for example wearing certain colors and some particular beaded necklaces, we informed the parents and those kids were sent to the guidance counselor. It’s the guidance counselor’s job to plumb the depths of the child’s thinking and either dismiss it or take further steps.
Same thing if I saw anything disturbing in their essays.
Certainly that isn’t foolproof. I recall the Columbine killers were able to convince their counselors that they were harmless.
I saw my career as not only giving instruction but also trying to give positive attention to the lonely and disaffected. At prom I used to sit with the loners instead of at the teachers’ tables, and I tried to give those kids extra attention all year.
When I was a new teacher I did something extremely stupid. I had a very bizarre 14-year old male student who seemed to be a potential powder keg. For some reason he liked me and asked me to go roller-blading with him. I took my daughter’s roller blades and did skate with him outside in a public shopping center. When I told my assistant principal the next day, he went ballistic. He told me in no uncertain terms that while he knew I was trying to form a bond, that I absolutely could NEVER hang out with a student, particularly a boy, outside of school.
We really do try. I started teaching before the Internet but once that and cell phones emerged, there was so much to which we had no access. Sometimes other kids would tell us about something troubling they saw online and then we could do the follow up…but none of what we try is 100% guaranteed against a determined, seething and wily child.
JMO and experience.
Because devices are the modern babysitters this day & age while the parent(s) do whatever they’re doing. It started generations ago with toys, then video games then PCs & now it’s cell phones & tablets or a mixture of those.
Many parents have zero clue what their kids are doing online & many teens would see it as the end of the world if a parent demanded to see their devices - would be like going through a desk or dresser, etc. - appalling to a teen when the reality of it is it’s for their own protection/benefit. She didn’t learn her alleged hatred & racism & radical views of the world through bullying alone. Throw in the new ange sense of entitlement & you have a pretty good recipie for rage at some point. Obviously neither parent was privy as to what she was potentially reading or posting online.

Wisconsin state laws do not require firearm owners to lock their weapons. The state does not have any laws in place that require unattended firearms to be stored a certain way. I think this is a state crime.Dad can be charged if it's learned he didn't properly secure the weapon used for the murders. "Federal law prohibits the possession of a handgun or handgun ammunition by any person under the age of 18."
OMG! That's practically down the road from me!San Diego man detained in connection with Wisconsin school shooting suspect
A 20-year-old California man has been detained on suspicion of "plotting" to coordinate a mass shooting at a government building in conjunction with the Madison school shooter, according to court records.
FBI agents detained Alexander Paffendorf, of Carlsbad, California, according to an emergency gun violence restraining order reviewed by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, part of USA TODAY Network. Authorities in Wisconsin said Natalie "Samantha" Rupnow, 15, shot and killed a student and teacher, and injured six others, at Abundant Life Christian School earlier this week.

I’m 30 miles south, in the city. I wonder which federal building they were going to target? Glad they caught him.Scary. I’m about 50 miles away. You must feel creeped out.

It is. Maybe she communicated with the guy and LE saw what was on her phone. Something had to link the two together.
It doesn’t seem like she had enough parental input. Did they ignore red flags or not see any?
A 20-year-old man from the San Diego area, with whom she was corresponding online, has been arrested after threatening to do something similar - in this case, blow up a government building as a suicide bomber. This could get very interesting, and not in a good way.Did she have friends? Where are statements from those who knew her?
Fact: Guns are given as birthday or Christmas gifts to children in the US. It's not that uncommon. Families with children holding guns pose for Christmas card photos in the USA.Should be and actually is are very different though. Can’t charge dad with a crime if it’s not actually illegal to have a firearm accessible to a 15 year old.
