WI WI - Suzanne Marie Schultz, 17, Black Earth, 1 Dec 1978

  • #61
What if they both were killed in Florida, and someone else drove the U-Haul to Chicago? What exactly were they transporting anyways. I haven’t heard that mentioned anywhere. What if it was drugs?

I think there is an incredibly strong likelihood that Suzanne and Stephen are these two Does found a few years later.

There are a lot of similarities between the unidentified and the missing persons.

"2 skeletons found in South Dade field," Miami Herald, 12 December 1982, 4C.

As stated earlier in the thread, Stephen might have had some drug issues and incidents with law enforcement. These Does are also linked to drug-trafficking.

"Police seek bits of evidence to identify bodies"

And lastly, the unidentified female is is believed to be approximately 10 years younger than the John Doe that was accompanying her. This also matches the description of Suzette and Stephen.

Dungeons' may be clue to deaths"

After reviewing all these possible connections, I have sent this tip into the Dane County Sheriff Department in Wisconsin and also the Medical Examiner currently assigned to the Does cases. I truly hope they take a look. This absolutely has to be them. When it comes to possible identification, I’d be pressed to find an alternative suggestion.

I’d also like to thank @citizen_sleuth who had initially compiled these articles for the Homestead Does WS thread. I found then clipped there when I began realizing that maybe these folks could be Suzanne and Stephen.

Speaking of that other thread, I’m also going to link this there as well.

According to Unidentified wiki:
The victim's body was found in a field along with the body of a man. They were believed to have been killed less than a year before they were found and there were gunshot wounds present on both victims. It is believed they were killed together.

Still no rule outs, which is interesting. I might look into their NamUs profiles and see when the last time either of them were updated. Because I confirmed that it was going to be looked into and yet they haven’t been ruled out. They also haven’t been confirmed either. I don’t know what’s happening here, but this is one of a couple of cases where I have felt quite strongly about my suggestion.

I finally received a reply from the detective assigned to Suzanne's MP case. If Stephen is alive and well and/or this doesn't turn out to be them, or even if it does, we might end up finding out relatively soon. When I mean relative even a year or so is short compared to how long they have been MIA. If they end up being on the list of exclusions, please let me know!
Hello,

I apologize for not responding to your email sooner. I will look into the information you provided.

Thank you,

George

That was about a year ago now. I never heard back. But still no rule-outs

Google maps shows that a Jan 2008 photo of a street view of that boarding house is now an empty lot with a metal gate at the entrance.

Stephen Lund's family is from Illinois. He lived in Riverdale, Illinois, a village bordering Chicago, when he got married in 1966. His ex-wife remarried 6 Nov 1989, about eleven years after 1 Dec 1978.

Does anyone know whether Stephen Lund was still married at the time he was with Suzanne Schultz? Or, when did he and Greene get divorced?

View attachment 427995

Wisconsin marriage records show Stephen Craig Lund was married 27 Nov 1966 in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, USA to Gladys Rae Greene in the Wisconsin, U.S., Marriage Records, 1820-2004

Wisconsin, U.S., Marriage Records, 1820-2004 shows Gladys Rae Roth nee Greene-Lund getting married 6 Nov 1989 in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, USA, to Terrence Glenn Roth.
________________________________________________________________________

Lund told his family in Illinois he would be home on July 4, 1979. He never arrived.
Schultz contacted her family in July of 1979 from Tampa, Florida.
Schultz told her family (in Black Earth?) she'd be home August 4, 1979. She never arrived.
Suzanne's U-Haul trailer and vehicle were located in Chicago in September, 1979, where they were abandoned. Was the trailer empty? Were her belongings still in the U-haul trailer or her vehicle? Were his?

Schultz was 17 when she went missing. Lund was 32 when he went missing. What's a 32 year old married/divorced man doing with a 17 year old? Odds are pretty good that one or both of them drove up from Florida to Chicago. And then Stephen Lund ends up back in Tampa, Florida, in a rooming house? In a Newspaper.com search from 1978-2023, this Suzanne Marie Schultz's name doesn't come up even once. Not a peep since then from either the newspapers or updates from the police in 45 years (that I'm aware of)? Pardon my bewilderment. It would be helpful to get a statement from the families involved.

In answer to my own question: According to public records on Ancestry.com, Greene and Lund were divorced in Dane County, WI, 21 Dec 1971.

I still think that Lund was alive in Tampa, Hillsborough County, FL, as late as 2009.

This info looks crucial. Maybe forward it along if you haven't already?

I have sent a follow up and I also included that information. Thanks @Quoththeraven I honestly didn’t think he was still alive after they were last heard from in 1978!

I am sending this all along. Maybe I should send it to the police department working on Steven’s case as well?

Anyways, here’s hoping I get a reply.

They removed the case from Wisconsin and put it under missing from "Florida" today

Her case has not been modified publicly since September 22, 2023. Interesting, given that I emailed Detective Mayerhofer in July '24, and they updated her profile to reflect that she went missing from Florida in Nov '24. Stephen's profile was last publicly modified on Jan 12th, 2024. 6 months before I notified them.

Another change is that Stephen Lund's case has been assigned to the very same detective assigned to Suzanne's case. Detective Mayerhofer. He is a part of the Investigative Services Bureau at Dane County Sherriff's office in Madison, Wisconsin. I don't know when that change occurred, but I find it interesting given that Lund is from Illinois and they were last known to be in Florida.

We first encounter Stephen Craig Lund in Lafayette, Indiana. His hometown then is listed as Riverdale, IL. He and another individual, Marion D. Oakley, attempt to smuggle a 15 year old underage girl into Lahr’s Hotel, Lafayette, IN. According to the Lafayette Journal & Courier Mon, Feb 15, 1965 Page 36 Newspapers.com. He’s then mentioned as a resident of Riverdale, IL being cited by police in the The Waukesha County Freeman Wed, Jan 26, 1966 Page 2, for driving without a license.

Then, The Waukesha County Freeman Fri, Aug 05, 1966 Page 2 shows him arrested in Waukesha with two other people for public intoxication and then arrested in a bar after hours on the 19th. He then was residing at 150 W St. Paul Ave., Waukesha.

He then was married to Gladys B Greene Nov 26, 1966 in Waukesha and gives his address as Riverdale, IL. A May 7, 1968 Waukesha County Freeman article shows they had a child while living in Waukesha.

Then, on Nov 11,1970, he overdoses on prescription pills at their home in Madison, WI after threatening the lives of his wife and neighbors. That incident is followed by their divorce in Madison on 21 Dec 1971 (See previous posts on this thread on WS). Then, on Nov 3, 1972 he’s charged in Madison for bail jumping. And the last news item on Newspapers.com is he’s charged in Portage, WI for driving without a license as a repeater on 11 Nov, 1975. His address is still listed as Madison.

Next we read about on NAMUS is a 32 year old man crossing state lines with a 17 year old girl. Did he have her parents consent? If not, why wasn’t he charged?

No news articles online about her going missing. Because the U-haul was listed as her rental, it was probably also her vehicle they were driving in. Reports say only the trailer was found. What happened to the car? We don’t know. I assume Lund still didn’t have a license, not that having a driver's license ever stopped him from driving. Lots of unanswered questions in this missing person’s case and we hear nothing from either of their families. Plus, no LE or media updates. Ever. In 47 years.

NAMUS: Stephen Lund was last known to be living in Tampa, FL. He told his family in Illinois he would be home on July 4, 1979 but never arrived. He was believed to be with Suzanne Schultz (MP 6635) who is also missing. Suzanne told her family she would be home on August 4, 1979. Stephen and Suzanne never arrived to their destinations and have not been seen since. Suzanne's U-Haul trailer was located, abandoned in Chicago in September, 1979.

In the above referenced Newspapers.com article from The Waukesha County Freeman Fri, Aug 05, 1966 Page 2, Lund was arrested with two other individuals. One was Arnold B Flann, age 22. Almost two years later,The Waukesha County Freeman Wed, Mar 20, 1968 Page 2 reports he was arrested driving a vehicle with Jerral Cihak , age 21, and a 12 year old girl inside. Cihak was charged with having sexual intercourse with the 12 year old girl, whom they spent the night with after getting her drunk. Draw your own conclusions.

I sent everything to the assigned detective and I received a reply. Can anyone confirm this info so I can reply to the detective? I don't have access to whatever database the Lund info was gathered from.

Thank you for the information. Nothing has showed in any of my databases but I’ll keep looking. Lund has a death certificate however, I’ll research the one in Tampa. Before I start to dig does the Lund in Tampa have the same DOB as the Lund with Suanne?

Interesting to hear that Lund has a death certificate. Considering he is in NamUs. Can anyone find info on that?

My info below came from the online
Hillsborough County Clerk.

The info below came from Ancestry.com. It shows the birth month and year, not the day. Since both records are for 2009 I assume the Index to Public Records is referring to the Hillsborough County Clerk info.

The detective would prob have to check Waukesha County Court records for his day of birth since that's where he committed most of his crimes.

It's not on Ancestry.com. Maybe his family had him legally declared dead after 7 years from when he went missing? Family Search Now shows him living at 2604 Corrine St., Tampa, FL, but now that's an empty lot. It used to be a boarding house according to a newspaper ad I found on Newspapers.com years ago. Ads from the 50's showed it as a single family home.
