I have family in eastern Canada that will get hit fairly hard in the storm, many of them fishermen. Thank God they are all in, but I worry about their boats as that is their life's saving tied to the wharf.

Winter has been brutal for Atlantic Canada this year. Not sure where your family is from but Newfoundland has been hit the hardest with blizzards.

This was January 11th. and I believe they got more shortly thereafter.

U.S. snowstorm grounds thousands of flights

A “historic” winter storm predicted for New York and New England triggers warnings of power outages and travel gridlock.

BOSTON—A “historic” winter storm that has caused more than 2,100 U.S. flights to be scrubbed has triggered a blizzard warning in New York City and may drop more knee-deep snow on Boston, leaving thousands without power.

Snow will start falling early Friday in New York, where the blizzard warning begins at 6 a.m. It will then change to rain or sleet.

The storm may bring 30 centimetres of snow driven by gusts of up to 72 km/h as it lashes the city into the evening, said Joe Pollina, a National Weather Service meteorologist.

“We’re taking this storm very seriously and you should take this storm very seriously,” said Jerome Hauer, commissioner of New York’s division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.

That's insane! Hope you can go back to sleep and get some rest. Snowing here now but they only predict 10 cms = about 3 inches. Hope it's not more! I hate driving in snow. :sigh:

I hate when I get a phone call from my kids' schools but not the one I work in. I got their automated phone call at 5:15 (12:30 dismissal). Now, I'm procrastinating on my shower cause I don't want to miss it if my school calls. Arghh. DH is away so I need to make pickup plans for them if I don't get out early.

I got an automated call from the county last night (can you believe technology today?) saying no one should be parked on the streets after 2 pm today. So, don't they have to close schools early? Especially since most employees have to park on the public streets(?)

Local news just showed some areas, I don't know where b/c they did not say, that really got what looked like the 34.3 inches. (I don't get the .3 or point anything either btw.) Guess the 7 a.m. National shows will say where.

If any of you have to be out there, be careful.

Just wanted to say THANKS for the measurement lesson :) I don't know metric. Would that be centimeters? 3 cm = 1 inch? TIA

We're real close to the 34.3 -- about under the tail of the 3. On a hill that usually gets three or four inches more than the surrounding area. It should be exciting tomorrow...

That pic keeps updating, which is cool! We are now down to 27.3 lol. I'm approx around the 7, but opposite of you I'm in a valley, which seems to protect us from a lot of the winds and extra snow.

Here is the latest..hope the number keeps heading down!

Aaand the snow just started.

DH has to be at work until 1130. Didn't worry me as I thought the snow wouldn't be starting until afternoon, but now I'm hoping he gets to leave earlier. :what:

No school here. I awoken at 4 and saw it started snowing and got a voice mail at 515. I All surrounding schools closed last night, in a way it is probably easier for working parents to find sitters with such an advance time. I was going to take my kids to school no matter what, 100 day today and didn't want my daughter to miss it because she worked hard on her project, even though I hate driving in snow, and before anyone says it, no it is not my choose to live in a winter state :). I am actually from Texas but have spent my whole life in New England. I also drive a jeep, which is the best vehicle I have ever driven in snow. It is not me that I am scared of when driving, its the other people :/
I am rambling.... I just hope no one loses power.. I hate being cold. If anyone goes out, drive safe or better yet watch out for the other drivers!

Anyone have any experience with feral cats? I am concerned about the feral/stray little guy I have been feeding for a few years. He comes through the winter fine (I have no idea where he goes to stay during big storms, but he's been around at least three winters) but a storm of this size has me worried about him. He won't come anywhere near people, and the closest I've gotten him to come for food is about 15 feet from the house.

I was thinking about putting a couple of boxes (waterproofed) along side the back and front of the house (protected from the wind/snow a bit by the side of the stoop) with a dish of food in each - does this sound like he would be able to smell it and go inside for some protection?

I hate seeing his little paw prints along my walkways every time we have snow, I feel so bad for him and wish he wasn't so afraid... Anyway, just looking for ideas on how to help this little guy thru the storm :(

That's a good idea. Put some old towels or blankets in the boxes too. He probably stays under someone's house or in a garage, but he will need food and may like the boxes. I've had success with that method before. I did try closer to the building/house for extra heat, but sometimes that is too close for them.

I hope you get the light fluffy type of snow and not the thick mushy type! Forget the snow shovel carbuff you will need to buy a snowplow!

P.S. I like your signature.

It's still snowing here, but we didn't get the most that we could have, at least not so far, and it is passing. Good luck to those of you digging out and those of you still awaiting Nemo's arrival.

They didn't cancel our schools until almost 6 a.m. I was a little irritated.

Sounds like he is one tough kitty surviving so long on his own. Will the snow bury the boxes?

Maybe building a cat igloo will work? :floorlaugh: Ahhh I need coffee, still sleepy and silly.

Good for Boston, weather channel has dropped the amount of snow you will get....only 2 to 3 feet now!

Hi there... I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia here... Canada's east cost.
The Weather channel is all red !!!! Blizzard forecast for tomorrow!!!!
I was going to make homemade meatballs in the crockpot for the event and decided to switch those to today in case we don't have power tomorrow...
so now I have steaks marinating for a possible bbq in the blizzard tomorrow :) (and a box of pinot grigiot for the snowbank - hehe)
Take care everyone...stay strong and warm :)

Steak and wine! My mouth is watering already lol! Be careful up there on the coast

I've prepped two box shelters for my little stray cat. While I was working on the second, my house cat decided to go in and fall asleep in the little nest I made.

I see the snowfall map has crept down again to 26" for me. Hoping we crawl down under two feet!
