Woman With No Arms Sues McDonalds After being Denied Service For Using Feet

I too hope she wins- that being said, I am usually one of the first to say...oh another lawsuit-- but this one is legit and I hope she wins a zillion dollars-
I agree, she deserves a hand. :D :D :D

After all this time and a lifetime of training - I'd think a hand would just be in her way... an annoyance! Some people are just incredibly adaptable.

I tried one of those push up bras that make fat women look less fat. I was in the dressing room and didn't adjust the straps first - so I ended up with a nipple in my nose (well, sort of) and my daughter climbs under the door and goes to yell out to the ladies that work there "Come quick! My Mom is having BOOB ISSUES!"

*blush*

Anyway, it was that day I learned that if a bra is fitted correctly, it lays flat on your chest in between the boobage and there isn't that neat little pocket for storing the food you drop out of your mouth when you eat.

So the trick is, get a bra that doesn't fit and you don't have to carry a purse. ;-)
Good grief! Very funny! rofl

I am really have a hard time about this issue. Definitely the employees who dared treat her that way should be fired. As far as compensation, I am not sure. Mc Donalds does alot for people. I stayed in one of their houses at a hospital when daughter was hurt. They fed us, sheltered us. and took care of our emotional needs. The companies heart is in the right place, and I don't think they should be kicked because of a couple of ignorant employees.

I will agree with you that McD's does do a lot to help people but they are responsible for the people they employ.
I do think this women should be compensated.

I think the employees need to be called to the carpet for their actions. Not legally - it's certainly not illegal to be ignorant and hurtful - but perhaps they could use a bit of sensitivity training.

I'd say add it to the curriculum of the public school system, but I am afraid they'd take out something like math to make room.

I don't begrudge the woman anything, but aren't there health laws about feet on food counters. Most places require shoes and shirts for a reason.

I agree with BB. I think the correct course of action would be to fire those employees and give the workers at their restaurants some sensitivity training.

McDonald's should also compensate her so far as some free meals, but I don't think this woman deserves any monetary compensation.

People need to stop treating McDonalds as some kind of bank they can keep withdrawing money from via lawsuits.

Where will the food go, then? Maybe I should get a bib with a pocket?

This nearly made me pee! You crack me up.

Judging by the stains on my shirts since purchasing the new bra that lifts and separates - the food goes directly onto the top of my belly.

The woman must be have been getting take out food to go since she bought so much and probably wasn't even going to eat there at the high cholesterol crap food place anyway. I think most of the employess at McDonalds do no better than trained monkeys to begin with, at least the few times I've been there over the years. If they are sued for their behavior a few times, maybe they will pay better and hire better people. Dairy Queen and Sonic are much better places to order better treats and quick burgers. The article does say that the food was eventually given to her son, but the same treatment happened 3 months later at a differet mcdonalds. There was no mention that the woman wasn't wearing some sort of slip on shoes and didn't say that she was barefooted except of course to handle the credit card.

my grandmother ran a restaurant for 19 years. i asked her about the issue you brought up. shirt and shoes are about safety not health. she had to take health test from the state each year and it was never covered. the safety courses the restaurant offered did mention it. no shoes = less traction so you are more able to slip. no shirt means hot food spills are more likely to cause a burn. its like don't use your hair dryer in the bath tub warning label. its all about not getting sued. the idea that they wouldn't take her card because its her feet is really closed minded of the employee. i would think its harder for her to scratch her butt with her foot than the guy behind her who probably scratched his crotch before he got out of the car. money is 1 of the most filthy things in a restaurant says my granny. the cashier should never touch your food for this very reason.

The Sun-Times article says that she used the drive-up. In both cases, the person at the first window processed her credit card with no problem. But in both cases, the person at the second window wouldn't give her the food. I'm going to guess it has something to do with hygiene? The people working in the area by the food probably have certain health codes they have to follow. Of course in general it makes sense to have the rules about barefooted customers and such, but I think these employees need more sensitivity training so they know how to treat people with disabilities.

if its about health wear gloves. i just don't see what makes her feet dirtier that the hands of the sweaty boob lady earlier in this thread. I'd rather touch her feet than the hands of the guy who just went to the restroom and didn't wash or the mom who changed a stinky diaper.

The guy who refused to give the food and made such a big dramatic thing over her having no arms just sounds like a moron to me. He didn't have to touch her feet to hand her the food and any credit card could have been dropped on the ground, in sweaty pockets, bathroom floor, car floorboard, even put in a diaper bag with a dirty diaper, anywhere, for all he knows. I know I don't normally sanitize my credit cards . There was no reason not to take her money and give her the food other than being obnoxious.

Oh, I missed the part that said she used the drive up. She was driving. That is really something to be able to get your foot out the window to reach for the bags. I can hardly reach the sodas and bags with my hand. Now I understand why she's mad. I wonder if the employees thought this was somekind of stunt> Anyway their behavior was ridiculous.

The woman and her attorney were interviewed this a.m. on WGN radio in Chicago on the the Spike O'Dell show. She said that the two incidents happened at two different McDonald's about three months apart and that both of them involved not only employees but also managers refusing to serve her. That suggests to me a sytemic problem at the chain that needs to be addressed. If it takes a lawsuit for that to happen, so be it, IMO.

She also said that the person giving her the food at the window did not have to make contact with her foot: the employee's hand was on one side of the bag and her foot was on the other.
