The jury will return to Lewis County Circuit Court Tuesday morning for a short trial on the penalty phase in regard to the first charge, which carries a penalty of life in prison. Then jurors will deliberate on whether Conaway will ever have a chance to make parole.
But even if the jury grants mercy, which would mean parole eligibility on that count in 15 years, that’s no guarantee Conaway will ever be granted parole.
And the other counts, if stacked together by Chief Judge Jake Reger when sentencing is held, could add decades to Conaway’s term.

1/2 Lena Lunsford'a aunt, Vickie Bowen, is the state's first witness in mercy phase after murder conviction: "I hope you show Lena as much mercy as she showed her daughter."

1/2 Vickie Bowen: "I put 80,0000 miles on my vehicle while looking for Aliayah, while Lena was out there getting pregnant, drinking and drugging and doing whatever."

Shannon Loudin of WV State Police says convicted murderer Lena Lunsford still won't confess to where Aliayah's remains are:"She’s coming in here to beg your mercy. She’s not here to do the right thing today, she’s just here for Lena.”

Why was she in prison after Aliayah's birth? I read she was in prison and that's why Aliayah was cared for by her grandmother.

Pregnant and snorting bath salts? I suppose I shouldn't be shocked really knowing what she did to her daughter.

At Lena Lunsford's mercy hearing, defense calls attorney Barbara Harmon-Schamberger, who testifies Lunsford was repeatedly raped by her father beginning at age 6.

Harmon-Schamberger tells jury that Lena Lunsford — via sexual abuse and string of violent relationships — has "never had one day in her life without fear and violence. She's damaged. ... You may give her the only genuine, meaningful kindness any one has ever shown her."

Harmon-Schamberger weeps to jury about granting Lena Lunsford mercy from life in prison: “She’s not a monster. She is a victim and a statistic, just like her children.”

After declining to testify during her murder trial, Lena Lunsford won't take the stand during her mercy hearing either.

I don't like it when the defense try's to play the victim card with the defendant. LL knows right from wrong her history didn't make her do anything to her other children just Aliayah. :(

Def attny Tom Dyer: Mercy from jury would give Lena Lunsford's teen daughters — who testified against her — a chance to forgive her at future parole hearings, while life sentence prevents that possibility.

Well, that's some twisted logic right there. .

We're in Weston for the sentencing hearing for Lena Lunsford-Conaway. Today's hearing only was to determine whether she'll get mercy for her murder conviction. Sentencing for the other convictions will come at a later date.

We heard witnesses for about an hour and a half, and the jury went back to deliberate at 12:11 p.m. They just came back with a verdict. We're waiting for the judge to come back in now.

Jury needed only 20 minutes to deliberate on Lena Lunsford's mercy plea after murder conviction. They're headed back into courtroom now. Mercy would give her chance of parole after 15 years; otherwise, it's life in prison.
