Gabby’s friend, Maija Posley, says that cops should have realized Gabby was in jeopardy.

“When I saw the police footage, I saw the bruise on her cheek, and she said that he grabbed her, and they just skimmed right over that”.

View attachment 315736

While Gabby’s bruise was quite noticeable, the police commented on his scratches but they were so insignificant and not visible, at least to me.

And I can't figure out how LE missed the hand prints on her arms.

Honest question!!

It seems to me they went above and beyond in making their decision. Even looking up the exact guidelines to follow. What do people think they should have done? Send GP to jail overnight? What could they have done differently? I'm asking sincerely, what? What were their other choices??
If only LE had stayed and talked to Gabby once BL had been chauffeured to his hotel room.
Gabby was so distraught it's hard to conceive that it was safe for her to drive.

Not everybody is saying that.
You asked what they could have done and I provided you with the latest information, linked several times already.
I don't believe it would necessarily have changed the outcome unless the seriousness of a felony record would have caused her to stop and think.

She would have returned to him immediately is my opinion.
It may have broken a chain in the co-dependency link or it may not.
We can only speculate.
I appreciate your sharing this info with me....I really don't know what, if anything else they could have done. That's what I'm wrestling with. Even the officer said the police aren't qualified to diagnose or give advise on DV. Well, maybe they should be. Add that to the list of requirements for the job.

I need to go back and check, but doesn't one of the officers also saying that Gabby could later decide to charge him as well? During the conversation discussed up thread. So there still might have been looming consequences for BL.

This also might explain his weird insistence (when he was dropped off) for a copy of the body cam footage.

I think it's worth mentioning that Gabby Petito was 5' 5" and 110 lbs. Brian Laundrie is 5'8" and 158 lbs.

ETA: Corrected GP's height.

JMO
And also that she obviously was not afraid of him--if she was, she wouldn't have slapped him around when she got upset.

Why would his parents remove the camper from the pick up while they were camping. It looks like its on the stands in the picture taken at the campground. Are those stable enough to sleep in on those camper stands? why would they take it off if they were only there for 1-2 days? makes no sense to me.
jmo

JMO. The camper has not been removed from the truck. I can clearly see the bumper and end of the right side of the truck. The the camper ‘stand’ legs telescope up to drive, and are put back gown when in use for stabilization

Quick note: couple of commenters have pointed out that Brian Laundrie’s “I don’t have a phone” comment very well could have been his retelling of the previous encounter with Gabby as he was questioned by police. We’ve noted this in the story on http://WFLA.com.

Um, his previous encounter from like 10 -20 mins ago? He gets out of the van with the phone already in his pants pocket. But we're supposed to believe he didn't have it less than a half an hour before?

Not only that, but he lies when asked what is in his pocket. He says 'Only my wallet' or words to that effect.

I have a hard time attributing the sins of BL and even his parents to a married mother of 2 with her own life that lived 40 miles away and has not been charged with a crime. LE has not said she is not cooperating. She said in her interview that she spoke to LE as soon as they called her - she called them back from Disney. We haven't seen any statement from LE that she is not cooperating or is involved in any way.

I don't know what everyone else's families look like but in mine, I don't know what my brother does every day. We both have our own families. We text good morning every couple of days but that's it. If my brother told me him and his partner broke up, I would probably text back "I'm so sorry" and literally not think about it again. I'd feel sad for him but I have my own family and my own business and my own life. I'm sure he would feel exactly the same.

So to think that CL, a married mother of two, spent a lot of time investigating her little brother's situation before the police even got involved is just bizarre to me.

I get that everyone wishes something different happened. That Gabby never went on the trip. That they broke up in Utah. That BL's parents called the cops on 9/1. That the police took the missing persons report seriously on 9/10 and insisted on seeing BL. That the cops used surveillance on BL so he was never allowed to escape. That everyone who assisted in any way is charged with applicable crimes.

But I just can't see the picking apart of someone, CL, who has her own life and there has been not one suggestion by LE that she did anything wrong. If she's arrested I will happily join in the sleuthing and criticism but until then I think it is wildly inappropriate and irresponsible, IMO.

When there's no news, sometimes it is time to take a break or research a different case. Otherwise it quickly turns into a mob against innocents. It happens time and time again.
When I was made aware of a link to a full transcript of the one and only, sole statement made by any of the Laundrie family, considering there were MSM articles indicating there were inconsistencies in it, it seemed natural, especially in this forum, to look at it. I found, what I believe in my opinion (which I stated) a couple of contradictions. I'm sorry if you feel this was "wildly inappropriate and irresponsible." Because I do respect your opinion, I have reassessed my post and my desire to comment on CL's statements. I wish I had never posted ~ not because I said or did anything wrong but because I don't ever wish to be considered in the light that you've painted.
CL is young; she does have young children; she chose to speak out. She wanted people to hear her. I don't think I or anyone else here should be made to feel guilty for evaluating what she said.
But perhaps I am out of line here? So I am reporting myself.

I'm hoping someone with legal experience can jump in & clarify on my behalf, as I don't know how it all works. It definitely sounds from the discussion that this court date HAD to happen, that is what LE is saying when Brian wants to get rid of it. The officer explains to BL that Brian can remove the protection order the next morning if he wants & be near her again, & BL can tell the prosecutor at the time of the court date he doesn't want for her to be convicted, but from the sounds of it the court date itself HAD to happen.

I don't think we have any way of knowing yet whether, or when, Gabby did get to attend this.
It HAD to happen if she was charged and arrested, but she was not. jmo

It's so interesting how people see the same things so differently! I honestly thought Brian was concerned about Gabby having a record...that his comments reflected how to avoid it--for her sake and for her future.

Imo, Brian was concerned that if Gabby was arrested she would tell the truth about what happened. Protecting someone so they don't get angrier is one thing, but going to jail? Hell no. I would start singing.

You guys, something really upsetting just occurred to me. I'm watching the footage released today, & something just jumped out. The officer tells BL (direct quotes here, but I recently broke my quote button being to vigorous in cleaning my keyboard. & some extraneous info skipped over, indicated by my insertion of [...] ):

LE: She's going to have a court date online, in a week or two, she's going to have to show up for court date online & have to answer....

BL: [...] it was a little squabble, I'm sorry that it had to get so public... So, I just want to get the checklist of things we gotta do to get rid of it.

LE: Well, she'll get a paper with the court date...

BL: How do we get rid of it? [makes a cut sign & laughs]

LE: Well the court date has to be attended [...] From there, she can ask to speak to the prosecutor. The prosecutor might be contacting you. & say hey man, like, I know she's a 11o pounds soaking wet, & you're a big strong guy...

Now, speculation on my part here: This could have presented an enormous amount of stress for them/him in the following days & weeks... whether she would have ever intended to do this we don't know, BUT he could have been terrified that she could have used that moment to provide more context to the event or even say more about their history & how he'd been treating her... He could have absolutely been losing it about this court date approaching.

A week or two means potentially in the range of Aug 19-Aug 26. Did it occur while he was away? But would he really not want to know what she said? Did she stay in the hotel in order to have a good internet connection to attend the court date? That may not have been a firm estimation from LE at all. For all we know, her court date could have been scheduled for sometime after Aug 26... at which time we have very little evidence of her being alive (only the restaurant encounter iirc).

I wonder if we will find out if a) this court date happened, or b) was about to happen, before she was killed.

This information changed some things for me... I feel like it could perhaps almost speak to a potential motive...

JMO.
Feeling really heavy & going to take a break from the board for the rest of the night, but interested as ever in your thoughts.

Did she actually receive a citation? I thought that that all went away as a result of LE's deciding to characterize the incidents as a "mental health issue," rather than a domestic violence one.

If she had to attend court for this, I'm stunned this wouldn't have been a huge topic of conversation at all since Day 1.

^^^^^^^^^^THIS! It makes me sick that she was treated so poorly and, IMO, they put her life in danger by not helping her. She looks so scared, I can hardly stand it, speaking as a mom of two daughters.

I hiked the AT for years before I attempted a thruhike. If you ever walked on the trail at all you have "hiked the AT", if you do longer stretches you have "sectioned hiked the AT" if you did the whole thing you "thruhiked the AT". There is no magic number of miles you have to walk to be able to say you hiked the AT. It not even a strange thing to say.

"Hey, Hyway, old buddy old pal, whacha doing this weekend?"
"I'm hiking the AT"
I don't know how you guys do it. I only did a hike in the mountains one time, and it was a short day hike. Sure I had to put bleach in the cabin water but this was my one and only time. I feel fat and lazy just reading these posts. I have certainly learned a lot about hiking though. From life straws to the gear BL had on his dyrt app pictures. Interesting for sure. IMO BL seemed to have the gear he needed for survival based upon those pictures and posts. JMO

JMO on advice to Dog. Don't pick up any potential evidence. Gloves or not. Go get one of those clamp things people use to pick up stuff after surgery and put what you find in a bag. No contamination, no smudges can make the difference between anything you find being admissible or not. MOO.

What would that can be evidence of that would matter if it was deemed inadmissible? He's not being charged with illegal camping. And if LE or dog used that campsite to track him and catch him, the court isn't going to make them release him because they didn't properly process the can.

Gabby Petito, Brian Laundrie investigation: 2 phones seen in police body cam video from Utah incident

Sept 30

Editor’s note: A previous version of the story included a statement from Laundrie saying he did not have a phone. We are looking into whether or not he was referring to having a phone in general or in that specific incident with police.

Ten days before he vanished, Brian Laundrie bought a new cell phone, according to the Laundrie family’s attorney Steve Bertolino.

Bertolino tells 8 On Your Side the FBI now has that phone. But many have been asking about Gabby Petito’s phone and whether Laundrie had a different phone while they were together on their road trip.

Since the phones undoubtedly hold valuable clues, 8 On Your Side has been looking into that question.

No formal citation. The officers referred the case notes to the legal dept for review. Their separation that night was informal request from the officers.

And why did LE not photograph them…I seem to remember a LEO video taping her while she was in the police car…..

ETA. maybe LE can only take pictures of evidence while under arrest?…..

What the Laundries attorney said about BL’s sister being in contact with BL on two different occasions after he came home really brought home the fact that the whole family is most likely involved in some type of cover up/lies. Her interview prior to this discovery painted a different picture, one that I kind of believed. I always hold out hope that people are inherently good and I was hanging on until now that they (the family) didn’t know much, but after this, how can you believe his family isn’t involved in some way shape or form. It’s all really sad. I truly hope they catch him and this doesn’t go down as another unsolved crime. Gabby and her family deserve justice.
