You're so Vain by Carly Simon mystery man

I just started reading this article about Carly: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/artists/carly-simon/biography

If you buy my Bob Dylan theory here's a passage from the article:

...One of the tracks to be included was a version of Eric Von Schmidt's "Baby Let Me Follow You Down," with lyrics rewritten for Simon by Bob Dylan. After the project was abandoned, Simon kept a low profile for the rest of the decade....

One of the lines from "You're so Vain" is: "You gave away the things you loved.."

During that time Bob Dylan created a huge stir amongst his fans by going electric. So he metaphorically gave away his acoustic guitar. JMO

The problem with Crosby is that he doesn't fit the A, E, R clues. His full name is David Van Cortlandt Crosby. No E in there.

Well, warren certainly does. He was such a jerk to so many women (purportedly), that he's my main suspect. ; )

When you watch the video the guy who walks in and stands dancing on stage looks like a Jewish Stereotype, meaning that the person is Jewish. More Dylan clues?

She's said the song is a composite of three people, but I get the sense one of them is the main character. She has said that it's a little bit about Beatty. So there are two other suspects that need to be found out and one of them is the main person. JMO

The second best James Bond theme song. The first, obvously, in my opinion is "Live and Let Die"

Yea, but there's only one real oo7....

I think we're going to disagree on this. Before I tell you who I think the best James Bond is I'll let you know that I've read all the books by Fleming and one by another author. So my opinion is based solely on who I think represents the James Bond of the books. My choice is Daniel Craig.

This is probably needs it's own thread. So I'll make one in a minute.

The first verse always made me think of Bowie. He fits the letter clues, too - and ofc 'David'. Plus, would apparently - and quite unapologetically - sleep with anything that moved.

Also - 'wife of a close friend', maybe Bianca Jagger?

Bowie's colourful, gender-bending sex life has included rumored relationships with Elizabeth Taylor and Bianca Jagger as well as ones - which the women have themselves confirmed - with Marianne Faithfull and Susan Sarandon.

Hmmm... very interesting. The word was Ovid and not David but you're right about all the rest and he's in the running. I'll stick with my Bob Dylan guess though.

Can Bowie be linked with Ovid somehow?

I love 'Nobody does it better', I would rate it 2nd too. My number one Bond song is 'You only live twice'. I'm a big fan of John Barry. :D I love the opening sequence of 'The Living Daylight's' so I'd rate 'the Living Daylights' by A-ha/John Barry as my 3rd fave in the Bond song list. :)

Back to 'You're so Vain', lol about the lyrics, I thought the words were 'Clowns in my coffee'. :hilarious:

I think it's mainly about Warren Beatty. :p Seemed like he thought so too. hahaha

Several years ago I read Sean Astin's, 'There and Back Again,' where he wrote a couple of pages about his dealings with Beatty and a movie he wrote/directed at the time. Beatty just sounds hilarious and 'out there', I imagined the song fit him so well.
Astin said Beatty was extremely secretive about his script and wouldn't let Astin in on anything, even what character he was playing.

Another guy I could picture the song about is George Hamilton. :dracula: :p

On November 4, 2009, while being interviewed on WNYC's Soundcheck, Simon revealed that she had hidden the name of the subject in a certain version of the song. The next day, the program's crew revealed the name concealed in a back-played whisper:[20] David. However, Simon has denied that the whisper was David, saying she has spoken "Ovid" both forwards and backwards, and that sounded like David.[8]

In February 2010 Simon told Uncut that the name of the subject was whispered backwards in a re-recording of "You're So Vain": "There's a little whisper -- and it's the answer to the puzzle."[21][22] A representative for Simon confirmed that the name whispered during the song is "David".[21] Multiple media outlets quickly reported that the subject was actually Simon's former boss at Elektra, David Geffen, and that the song had been inspired by her jealousy of the attention Geffen had lavished on label-mate Joni Mitchell.[23][24] The following day Jim Hart, Simon's ex-husband and close friend, denied that the song was about Geffen.[6] Simon's publicist confirmed that the song was not about Geffen, but that there was indeed "a David who is connected to the song in some way, shape, or form,"[6]

'If you listen carefully to the track on the new album, there is a disguised sort of a sound that contains the person,' she says. Yes . . . and? 'But he's not called David, as some people have said. There's no "v" in the word. You'd have to be a computer Einstein with a genius for unscrambling.'

You know what else there's no 'V' in, Carly? The phrases 'attention ho' and 'milking it'.

If it were me I'd be having as much fun and being as coy Carly is. :giggle: It's gotta be a riot for her.
