If you buy my Bob Dylan theory here's a passage from the article:
...One of the tracks to be included was a version of Eric Von Schmidt's "Baby Let Me Follow You Down," with lyrics rewritten for Simon by Bob Dylan. After the project was abandoned, Simon kept a low profile for the rest of the decade....
One of the lines from "You're so Vain" is: "You gave away the things you loved.."
During that time Bob Dylan created a huge stir amongst his fans by going electric. So he metaphorically gave away his acoustic guitar. JMO
