Police said Long’s body was found by four search volunteers in an area south of Watson around 7:30 p.m. Monday. near the Little Wabash River.

“Yeah I seen them over there drinking beer instead of searching for the little girl,” one neighbor said. That’s very pathetic, it’s awful. If that was my kid, I’d be out there looking 24/7.”

CD's story is coming direct from SJM's interview. That is, everything other than NG crying and repeatedly saying Willow's name while he was pointing to the door, that is hearsay from TK. SJM just said he pointed.

JD's story is all hearsay from DD

Everyone else's story IE: town citizens/neighbors is hearsay from who-knows.

*headdesk*

:seeya: Toothless, I see you've mastered those initials. lol Now if I can just figure them out??? :waitasec:

Correction, it is hearsay from CE, not TK regarding NG.

SJM:

CE: http://shelbycountynews.net/search-...ay-evening-after-temporary-delay-p24744-1.htm
“She woke up at 10:30 a.m. with Nathanial crying that Willow was gone, or saying something about ‘Willow,’ saying something ‘Willow."

“He just said ‘Willow’ over and over and pointed out the door. He was really upset and crying a lot. I had originally thought maybe she had taken a toy away from him or something or changed the (TV) channel."

CE: “Her mom and dad are over-the-road truck drivers. They had left the night before (Saturday) to go out on the road." (Note that they left Saturday night according to CE.)

hope that helps...with the links.

I'm sure the presser will address some of this, but out of general curiosity, can any case veterans shed some light on the typical reasoning behind not releasing the COD? I've heard it's to prevent false confessions, but how prevalent of a fear is that these days? have there been any instances besides with jon-benet when significant LE resources were allotted towards investigating a dead end like that? It's hard to fathom how somebody could want to lie about something like that, but here we are. Or do they mean more like "taking the blame for someone close" false confessions..? And is the COD ever withheld even after there is a conviction? Do privacy/decency ever come into account, if it's a matter of there being no reason to satisfy the public's morbid curiosity?

Thanks in advance!

Authorities said Justin DeRyke never helped in the initial search effort and neighbors also reported a suspicious lack of urgency with him.

I C&P a bit more, it puts the statement a bit more clear, I think. I wonder who "them" is? Uncle & who?

Thanks :seeya:

It has to be Mom. The G-parents didn't get back until an hour before Willow was found. Unless the person said him and the reporter heard them.

Oh jeez. If this is true, that makes me sick.

(Lol at "seen them..." Glad to see my neighbors to the west talk like most do here in Indy )

Kdub- We don't know what ANYONE is saying. We can assume the Grandpa's story came from the Uncle. We can assume the original timeline of events comes from the Mom.

Thank you. Either way, it seems she had a tragic ending to her beautiful little life, I am almost scared to find out more details.

It is pretty clear at this point that police suspected him from day one.
They wouldn't have ALLOWED him to search!

Family members not searching through fields for a child is not indicative of guilt.
Police does not allow family to search because they could contaminate evidence, guilty or not. :twocents:

How could I forget her name? :(

But I remember that beautiful red hair. Another little spitfire snuffed out. :stormingmad:

You cannot be expected to remember every single ones name. :twocents:
There are just certain ones that you never, ever forget. Lily Lynette is one of those for me. :seeya:
There was also a nearly identical case about 6 months later.
Another baby girl named Maleeya.

A lot of people mix her and Lily up. :seeya:

I am going to take the neighbors comments with a grain of salt. And maybe a lime for the beer, too. LOL.

CE said that NG was extremely upset, very upset...crying and calling for Willow and trying to tell them something about where she went but he couldn't get the words out in such a way they could understand what he meant. He just cried and said "something"..Willow! "Something...something.. "Willow!" WHAT Is that something little man? :( Poor baby!!

I'm scared for him because now I don't know what I believe. JD knows his nephew...what if he did something to Willow in front of NG on purpose...for chits and grins, knowing it didn't matter because NG can't talk very well, so who cares if he witnesses something?? I hope this is NOT the case!

:( So very sad for that little boy....he clearly saw something very disturbing.

JD claims (via DD) that NG was fast asleep when the incident occurred.

well there is obviously more than one injury so the coroner has to answer to COD specifically.

it won't let me cut/paste so i'll type it: "Deryke wouldn't say how his son did it" meaning put her out of her misery.

we can assume (can we?) that there was some type of puncture wound as the stick story wouldn't have come out (true or not) if there wasn't a point of entry for an object.

then there's the 'end of misery' injury to which we can only speculate. LE did say that 'additional charges' would be filed pending the autopsy.

thoughts?

Yes, unfortunately 'seen' minus a preceding 'have' is rampant in this area, much to my chagrin.

HLN was just talking about the uncle being in court today so they MIGHT cover it. Hope so!

Both versions of the stories are in this article, the grandpa/uncle's and the mom's, and only one can be true. Saturday night or Sunday morning?

We posted a lot of information on this last night on thread 2. Putting her out of her misery could have been removing a stick that ultimately led to her bleeding out. Thread 2 has pages and pages of this. :twocents:

Huh. I thought the grandpa said that the uncle didn't drink? Taking a large helping of salt with what the neighbor says, but hey, nothing surprised me anymore.

It's okay, same here! I'm only about 2 to 2 1/2 hours east of Watson/Effingham, over in central Indiana :)

I see you're new here, so welcome!

Since you're a local, how is the local news coverage now on this story? I know it's a bit away from a major news station, so just wondering if the local news still has it on high priority.

I believe the medical examiner will know the time of death
Saturday night vs Sunday morning.

That will clear up some of the confusion perhaps.

"Justin's father and Willow's grandfather, Dale DeRyke, says Willow tripped and fell into a pile of sticks in her yard. He says a stick was lodged in Willow's head. He says Justin was scared, wasn't thinking, and put her out of her misery.

DeRyke wouldn't say how his son did it, but said Justin plans to plead guilty to first-degree murder".

Interesting. Seems to me, if what GPA says is true, this really could have been an accident, that led to a series of increasingly poor choices. Snowball effect. Not many people would plead guilty in this situation, unless they genuinely had remorse. Even if they had remorse, their lawyers would convince them otherwise...

As for other charges being filed, my guess is failure to seek medical attention, abuse of a corpse, and obstruction of justice. They might also throw in an endangering law enforcement officers due to the search and heat. This should be interesting.

Anyone know the link for the upcoming hearing?
