MI - Neurosurgeon Dr. Devon Hoover, 53, found fatally shot during welfare check, Detroit, Apr 2023

Recalling that DPD Chief White said that there would be an arrest in the case "before snow hits the ground", snow is forecast for metro Detroit next Wednesday, November 1.

WORKWEEK
Highs will be in 40s with lows in the 20s and 30s. While Halloween looks like it will remain dry during the day, we could see rain and snow showers develop at night and early Wednesday.

I hope the snow forecast is wrong- I am not ready for snow!!!!!

Bolded by me:

“Detroit police Chief James White said Thursday, Nov. 2 that the investigation is moving forward, and that investigators “expect to have an announcement soon,” hopefully by the end of the year.

“We are confident that we should be able to bring some closure to this family very, very soon,” White said.

The chief did not specify what the announcement would include, but it’s possible police are preparing to make an arrest in Hoover’s killing. White said investigators have been working closely with the prosecutor’s office on this case, and that they had a “significant to-do list” that is “just about complete.”

One person of interest was taken into custody shortly after the shooting, but that person was released on May 2. Officials said the person of interest was in custody on a warrant unrelated to Hoover’s murder, though Detroit police believed the person had information about what happened.”

Detroit Police Chief James White said he's "hopeful" to have an announcement by the end of the year as it relates to the murder of a Detroit neurosurgeon who was found shot to death in his home in the city's Boston-Edison neighborhood.

During a meeting of the Detroit Board of Police Commissioners Thursday, White said he has an active team of investigators working to solve the case involving Dr. Devon Hoover and he talks regularly with Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

"We are confident that we should be able to bring some closure to this family very, very soon," White told the board...

says that it has a security system... not activated the night he was killed? that house is so big, it would be weird to be there alone IMO.
Excellent point. I’m curious - I’ve seen no mention of house staff. A house that size would require it for cleaning, maintenance due to it’s age, the grounds and security especially because it’s Detroit. Based on his position, he would have worked long hours. Did he have a pet? I am surprised there was not some live-in staff of some type.

I've lived in the Boston-Edison district - Henry Ford's home actually - we did not have live in staff but instead hired help for the grounds and cleaned the inside ourselves. Several rooms went unused and stay mostly clean. We had a security system but no roaming guards, lol...

Folks who are "scared" to live in Detroit, or in this area - just wouldn't. People who live in the neighborhood live there BECAUSE it is DETROIT.

IMO.

Many of the homes in Detroit that were originally owned by very wealthy folks have a third floor with a back stairway that was intended for live-in housekeepers or nannies. DH grew up in the Palmer Park area (Sherwood Forest) where many of the homes in his neighborhood, including his family home, had a third floor with a bedroom, bath, and separate stairway that was accessed from the back of the house.

I don't recall reading anything about Dr. Hoover having housekeeping help, but he was very involved in maintaining his landscape. He apparently loved to prune his trees and shrubs and kept the property immaculate.

O/T We called it the "maid's quarters" (cringe) and it was like a little one bedroom apartment. Had a beautiful clawfoot tub, lots of light, it was delightful. On just the second floor though, enter through the back door (of course), and very near the children's bedrooms. Third floor was all wood, huge "library" that was rarely used, just shown for tours.

Former federal Prosecutor Abed Hammoud said it's possible Detroit police aren't debriefing anyone to make sure crucial information doesn't leak.

He pointed out that police have said the case may be domestic and "that makes it more difficult in the sense that you can’t just say 'X's' DNA was in the house. 'X' must be a suspect. Because if it’s an acquaintance, you expect to find the DNA in the house, so it makes it more difficult to investigate and prosecute."

Thank you. From your link

DETROIT (WXYZ) — As snow covers the ground in Detroit this week, loved ones of Dr. Devon Hoover aren't thinking about how cold it is. They told us they're thinking of a statement made by the Detroit Police Department at a police commissioners meeting on Aug. 31.

Regarding Hoover's murder investigation, DPD stated they were "prepared to have an announcement before snow hits the ground."

Does all of this mean the police have moved the arrest by the first snowfall date to the end of the year? They keep moving the goalposts. Why? Acquaintances have been known to murder others. Is the police telling us that they know who did this horrible crime of murder but because the killer knew the doctor, they can't reach a conviction?

We actually had the first snow of the season on Halloween. It was bitterly cold, and not many kids showed up for trick-or-treat. It started snowing around 9:00PM with about 1/2 inch accumulation. Not a lot of snow, but still the first snow of the season. See my post #301 upthread.

How wonderful it must have been to be raised in one of the most elegant homes in Detroit. Does DH's family home remain in the family today? The Boston Blvd residence had a separate stairway that led from the 3rd floor to the kitchen. There is also a functioning 3rd floor exterior door leading onto the balcony for stargazing.

It is reasonable to assume Dr Hoover maintained a small but adequate staff even if on a part time basis. After all, he enjoyed entertaining so it's likely he had quality, local Chefs at hand for prepping, organizing, serving, as needed.

Possibly, another was responsible for keeping the home tidy and the household laundry handled. Then, another person may have been assigned the lawn care. As you've politely mentioned Devon preferred to tend to the chore of trimming the shrubbery himself. Maybe someone helped bag the clippings though.

Acquaintances visited the home. Some more regularly than others. Not all acquaintances are paid staff. Some are neighbors, patients or lovers. The murder seems personal due to the location of the CS. jmoo

How fortunate to reside in a wonderful mansion such as these with an authentic clawfoot tub and 3rd floor sunshine! Can you appreciate the small size of a typical NYC apartment in comparison?

Placing the entry to the upper quarters near the rooms for the children was intentional just as it was intentional to have the upper stairway leading into the Dr's kitchen. Maybe when it was initially built, there was a need for copious amounts of cooking and baking to be done.

As a lover of historic homes, I'm very glad that this one was lovingly maintained by its owner.
The Good Doctor relished living there.
Though his time in it was not as long as anyone would like, and was cut short in barbaric fashion, at least Dr. Hoover had the chance to live and entertain in splendid fashion.
Sadly, the heartbeat of the home is gone.

We're quickly approaching the end of the year. DPD Chief James White said there would be an arrest and charges filed in this case before year's end. Dr. Hoover's family deserves to know who took this brilliant surgeon's life.
It is frustrating that we are almost at year's end with no further information or arrest. My heart aches for this family. This is especially true because the Chief of Police said there would most likely be an arrest with the first snowfall- well, that's come and gone------

And we are still waiting Chief.... I don't trust anything DPD says at this point. In the Woll case they kept saying it was most likely domestic and it turned out to be a stranger. Will this be a similar situation? Not likely, but it's super uncomfortable knowing there is a killer among us and they always act like they have things under control.

MOO as a local.

The year is nearly over but there has still not been an arrest  No media coverage. No updates on the case from DPD. Heads should roll. JMO
I know- I think about this horrific case quite often and feel so frustrated for the family and friends of this wonderful man that to date we have heard nothing from law enforcement.
