GUILTY TX - Belinda Temple, 30, pregnant, Katy, 11 Jan 1999 *Guilty again in 2023*

Background on the case:

Based on a law that went into effect in 2003, prosecutors could charge David Temple on separate counts - one for the murder of his wife and one for the murder of her unborn child.

Belinda Temple was 8 months pregnant, a teacher. She complained to a friend that David was distant over her pregnancy, she put up shelves by herself in the baby room. David was off on a hunting trip. In reality he was having an extramarital affair and was with his gf. When she was found, she was crouching in a closet, a phone near her hand, where it's assumed she was hiding trying to call for help. She was shot in the head. The house had been made to look like a break in had occured. However, NOTHING was taken.

3 days before murder, David Temple tells gf he loves her.

David Temple is claiming he's innocent. He later marries the gf.

When Nancy Grace started her new show on Headline News she had Belinda's parents in the studio with her. I think this was the day David's parents held a press conference about David's arrest. For some reason I think they held it at the gravesite of Belinda, or something like that. I'll try to hunt up the transcript.......it was a compelling interview.

Thirty-year-old Belinda Temple was found shot to death hiding in her bedroom closet.

You know, in Katy, Texas, high school football is not just a game, oh, no. It's a lifestyle. In fact Hollywood just released a blockbuster movie about football obsession, "Friday Night Lights." Well on the real football field, David Temple was nicknamed the Temple of Doom and turned into a local football hero, but now police believe he's not only the victim's husband, but could be a cold blooded killer who has walked free for six years.

The trial of David Mark Temple, the former SFA football player accused of killing his wife, former Nacogdoches resident Belinda Lucas Temple, more than seven years ago, has been postponed and may not take place until next year, the Houston Chronicle reported in its Monday edition.

The former Alief High School coach, who now lives in Richmond, was set to go to trial Monday, but because of problems with a state witness who was supposed to testify about gunshot residue evidence, the trial has been put on hold, the Chronicle reported.

Temple, now 37, was arrested in November 2004 and indicted by a grand jury several months later. Belinda was a graduate of Nacogdoches High School and SFA.

Belinda, who was eight months pregnant at the time of her death, was killed in her home in Katy on Jan. 11, 1999. On the day of the shooting, Temple, a coach at Alief Hastings High School, told officers he had taken his son shopping and to play in a nearby park, at the time his wife was murdered. He said he returned home from the outing to find her body in an upstairs closet. She had been shot once in the back of the head.

Temple was interviewed by police for about 30 minutes the night of the shooting, then he refused to answer any more questions and contacted an attorney.

I was trying to find this guy's name to add to the "Men Who Murder Their Wives" thread. I thought he had been convicted of his pregnant wife's murder, but he hasn't even gone to trial yet.

Sad and so unnecessary. Prayers for Belinda Temple's family, especially for her son.

Like Laci, Belinda is in Heaven holding her baby.

Former high school football coach David Mark Temple, 39, is expected to stand trial this week on a charge of murder in the January 1999 death of his wife, Belinda Tracie Temple, a Katy High School teacher...

But one week after the couple's seventh wedding anniversary, their seemingly idyllic home life was shattered when Belinda Temple, eight months pregnant with their second child, was found shot in the back of the head in the master bedroom closet of their home at 22502 Round Valley off South Mason Road.
The shotgun blast shattered her entire cranial cavity and exited on the right side of her face, creating a 5-inch hole, according to her autopsy report. The couple's unborn baby girl, Erin, also died.
Temple said he discovered his wife's body when he returned home from shopping with his son, then 3, who had been sent home from day care sick that day.

Should be a good trial. Defense lawyer is Dick DeGuerin and D.A.Kelly Siegler is prosecuting.

The hubby later married the other teacher he was having an affair with. Foolish woman.

I'm sorry but people deeply in love don't have affairs, affairs usually are emotional not just physical and he should have just left her instead of commiting a double murder.

"In 2004, however, DeGuerin said Temple was "deeply in love" with his wife and was devastated by her violent death.
DeGuerin also said Temple had broken off his affair before his wife died and did not rekindle the relationship until more than a year after the shooting."

What took 9 years?!

TGIR, why does the name Dick DeGuerin sound so familiar? Did he handle any other big case that we've discussed here?

He's represented Tom DeLay, David Koresh, and Robert Durst, so he's probably been in the news a lot.

ETA He was in Waco representing David Koresh during his standoff with the FBI and the ATF. He pushed Barbara Piotrowski’s wheel chair into the courtroom after she was allegedly shot by exercise mogul Richard Minns. He sat by Lilla Paulus in Houston when she was tried for her involvement in the murder of John Hill. He stood with U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson while she was fighting for her political life against DA Ronnie Earle in Austin. He represented Ramsey Muniz, La Raza Unida’s candidate for Governor, as he fought a losing battle over drugs and he took up for Juana Leija, the mother who tried to drown all six of her children and herself, when the DA wanted the death penalty. http://www.roundtop.com/DeGuerin.htm

How sweet of him..he was suspended WITH pay for 8 years. (very long paid vacation) they found gunshot residue on his jacket. He was having an affair I know that don't mean he killed his wife but it is somewhat of a contributing factor someone got in through the back door without the dog mauling them to death? The police couldnt even get in the house without the husband securing the dog in the garage first. Oh geez...
