Found Alive TX - Brett Detamore, 38, Houston / Bear Creek Park, truck found torched, 21 June 2023

A few hours later, his distinctive bright yellow Dodge Ram pickup truck was found burning in Bear Creek Park, roughly 20 miles from his last known location. Identifying details on the vehicle were removed before the fire began, but police were able to link the car to Detamore through a "secret" vehicle identification number found by an officer, Walker said.

How many trucks in this model and color can exist in Houston? It seems pretty pointless to remove identifying details when the truck itself is eminently identifiable.

West University Place Police Department

The West University Place Police Department has been diligently working on multiple fronts to unravel the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of Brett Detamore. Below are significant updates that were shared during today’s press conference regarding the ongoing investigation:

Subpoenas for Financial and Phone Records: WUPD has requested subpoenas for both financial and phone records. These records are critical in piecing together the puzzle and gaining insight into the activities leading up to his disappearance. The analysis of these records will provide valuable clues to our search for answers.

Witness Interview: We are actively interviewing a witness who observed a male walking away from a burning vehicle in the vicinity of the park Detamore’s vehicle was found in. The witness account is an essential piece of information that may shed light on the event surrounding Brett’s disappearance. Our dedicated investigators are carefully examining this testimony and considering its significance in the overall investigation.

Limited Information Release: While we understand the community’s desire for more information, we must exercise caution due to the presence of potential suspects, the person who left, or potential co-conspirators who might be monitoring our updates. Our priority is to protect the integrity of the investigation and ensure that no potential evidence or leads are compromised.

No Foul Play Detected: Based on evidence gathered thus far, it appears that Brett’s disappearance was pre-planned. Our investigation has not revealed any indications of foul play at this time. We are diligently analyzing the available information to understand the motives and circumstances surrounding this decision.

WUPD wants to assure the community, and the Detamore family that we are fully committed to finding him. Our dedicated team of investigators, with the support of partner agencies, will pursue every lead, explore every angle, and exhaust all recourses until we bring Brett home safely.

The publics’ continued support, corporation, and understanding during this critical phase of the investigation are invaluable. We are encouraging anyone who has information regarding Brett’s disappearance or any details that may pertain to this case to come forward and share it with the West University Place Police Department.

A witness also told authorities they saw a man walk away from a burning car.

The Harris County Constable’s Office for Precinct 1, Precinct 5 and Texas EquuSearch searched the park, but the man was not found.

Police said the disappearance may have been planned without a crime occurring.

“Its really hard for me to understand if there is no foul play involved, how a person could put his family through this kind of trauma,” said Ken Walker, the West University Chief of Police.

MOD NOTE:

1. If you are a friend or family member of the missing person or his family, your information that is "inside information" can not be posted unless you are verified. Anybody can say anything on the internet and we wish to respect the missing person by making sure only what's accurate is posted here.

2. If you know somebody who knows a family member or friend of the victim, who told you something . . . that can't be posted, it's rumor. That goes for your friend, your hairdresser, your Websleuths is FACT-BASED and we require verification of anything posted on this site. Verification comes in the form of mainstream media articles, law enforcement press releases or social media posts and a limited number of already approved sites like podcasts. If there is any doubt as to whether a source is approved, ASK FIRST by clicking "report" under any post and linking the source there so we can review it.

3. One last time . . . comments on social media are RUMOR, not FACT. Websleuths is FACT-BASED. Only top-level posts made by the administrator of the "Help Find" page may be posted, NO COMMENTS.

4. Websleuths is victim friendly. Speculation that a missing person has committed suicide or that the disappearance is a hoax is not victim friendly and can not be discussed unless/until LE or MSM has indicated there is reason to look in that direction.

Thread is open. Post with care.
Up there in red.

I didn't know about the latest news when I wrote that. Obviously given what the Sheriff said at the press conference, voluntary disappearance is now on the table and may be discussed.

Do NOT make accusations or insinuations towards any other family member, friend, or associate of BD's.

Full summary now of the 16 or so minute presser:

(Ken Walker, Chief of WUPD): Missing person was found safe yesterday and the constable will say more.

Constable Rosen: Found out BD's whereabouts yesterday and worked collaboratively with family to get him back.

Also worked collaboratively with other LE.

Was found unharmed in San Antonio at a bus stop, a bit disheveled but unharmed.

Transported back to Harris County voluntarily to Houston. They didn't have to do anything other than say come with us, we want to take you back. Officers who specialize in mental health things worked with him and he's being treated in the hospital currently. They are so happy to have the resolution it did.

BD has 3 young kids and his kids need him and they worked to bring him home to his kids. They need their father.

Question about resources and possible arson charges on the truck. Are criminal charges possible? That would be up to HFD arson not PD and their (PD's) role was to get him home safely and unharmed and they did that.

Question about the money on search and what was going through BD's mind and why he disappeared and about lawsuits? What was going through his mind they don't know. People have struggles and deal with things in different ways and don't know what was going through his mind. They said he's getting the care he needs right now and anything else down the road would be figured out later. The most important thing is stabilizing him right now.

Question about why he (the constable) is involved did he know the family before etc? No, he knew of them through someone else, but met them through this. He's happy to get involved in any case.

Question for the Chief (not Constable) why this was made a high profile case and so many resources given to it? They (LE) didn't make it high profile, it was social media that made it high profile and got more media in it.

LE IS still investigating people who may be complicit in what was occurring with other things BD was involved in - including possibly his being "missing" - and they are looking into other possible crimes and who may have been involved.

Question did it seem family was forthcoming and did they think he was genuinely missing? Yes, we had every indication this was a truly grieving family who was hurting really badly concerned about their missing loved one.

Question (rambling...last several all from the same reporter) answer was that early on they were able to develop evidence and determine that he probably left on his own for a lot of reasons. We don't do pressure. We would have responded the same.

Question about whether public pressure changed their response search wise? No.

Question about cost. A lot. Haven't totaled it. They (LE) feel the worst for TES and it was hot and their volunteers were doing an incredible job.

Question: Do the tax payers just bear the burden? Yes.

Question: Was it Greyhound? Or?

Constable jumps in: This is their (LE) job and it doesn't matter the expense. It's their fiduciary duty. They are going to do it and you should want LE to work collaboratively on cases like this, criminal matters, animal cruelty, etc. just like they do every day for a variety of types of cases and crimes. This is the oath we took. This is no different than any other case.

Questions (still same person for all these last questions, starting to get what seems antagonistic with the Chief): "Oh come on, you can't say..."

Constable: I just did.

Question: I mean, lets be honest, you have three agencies. You have a billboard within a day or two [as an edit, there was just another MP case in Houston that I also posted about and volunteers secured the same Clear Channel billboards for her as were done for Brett[

Constable: Maya, you're wrong. We'd call out TES if we thought someone committed suicide in the park. We'd call out HFD for arson they investigate that every day. That's not something that we do. We work together to find a missing person. I work every day with different agencies to solve cases. If there did become criminal activity about it we'd be involved in that. There's no favortism.

Question (still Maya): How'd you find him? He reached out to his family. So he reached out to his wife in email? Yes. And we had to verify it wasn't a hoax, he wasn't being held hostage, etc. What did he say? I'm not going to get into that.

Question: Were there drugs, etc. found on him? No. He was ready to get help. He was ready for treatment. And rehab? No. There's no rehab. He's at a hospital being medically treated.

Question: How was his interaction with your deputies? Excellent. Excellent. Did he say anything? Did they note anything in particular? No.

Question to the chief: I understand unmarked units may have been present with government plates...? (unclear) I don't know. There may have been one there, but it wasn't us.

Chief again: Those of you not from Texas may not realize we all work together. It may not be the case in other places for those of you not born here, but we work together all the time. We all work together.

Question (Maya again): I think the thought is, usually missing person's cases don't get this kind of attention... (Constable) It was a little extra than a missing person's, Maya. It was a burned car. Any time early in an investigation you don't know which direction. We arranged to have TES out there because we fully expected we possibly a person in a park who committed suicide.

Question: (something about family wanting to say anything) (Constable) The family is incredibly appreciative for everyone who searched, sent well wishes, sent tips, was concerned about his well being. That was the one thing they wanted to say. Now they truly need some privacy to allow their family to heal to get through this.

And now the investigation in regards to his vehicle will be investigated by HFD arson and wherever that turns that turns. If there's something that needs to get charged it gets charged. And neither of us want to comment on that now.

Then they do a summary in Spanish for networks wanting clips to use.
