I agree it is complicated and varies by state. It is obviously a tool used in other cases. This was the answer I received when I asked if it was a possibility with THIS case. I was told no. It's a chain of custody issue.

I agree with you. I think it should be utilized as a tool. I'm just sharing what I was told by LE in IN when I questioned why it had not been used in this case.

There are strict rules and laws regarding the chain of custody for evidence. I'm assuming the police can't turn the DNA over to a geneology company. I will look into it further.
