5 yrs ago my best friends 13, yr old daughter was murdered by her step-uncle.Over the course of the trial we noticed that one of the jurors seemed to be not paying attention and in fact seemed to be dozing off alot. During our lunch breaks we worried about him and fussed and said he needs to wake up and pay attention.
After the verdict was read another friend and I were leaving the courthouse together, he pulled up alongside us and offered his condolenses on our loss. He also told us that he had determined that the step-uncle was guilty based on the evidence presented and that he knew early on due to this evidence that he was guilty. He turned out to be a high school teacher. The step-uncle was convicted of second degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus hard labor. The DA opted not to go for first degree due to lack of DNA and was afraid he might lose the case entirely. I so wanted the death penalty for the monster who murdered our sweet Kaitlin.
I will never forget the words of the juror who spoke to us after the trial....He said...justice was not done in that courtroom today...justice will be done every morning for the rest of his life when he wakes up in his cell and knows why he is there and knows that he will never ever leave there alive...
I am hoping for a death penalty, but due to that sentiment I am ok with LWOP too...
Just goes to show you never ever know what a juror is thinking as we had him pegged as the one who wasnt even paying attention...turns out his first vote was guilty , and when the trashing of the victim even started in that jury room he was the one to shut it down...
Thanks Katie for your great reporting... I know it is draining to be in that courtroom...
