All things swine flu (H1N1)

What really concerns me is Mexico basically shutting down their economy over this.

"Essential services such as transport, supermarkets, trash collection and hospitals will remain open."

Something's up that we're not being told about, IMO. I've heard that they can't keep up with the number count of people becoming infected. They're simply overwhelmed.

All I can think of is 'Captain Trips' from Stephen Kings' book the stand.

I think once this is all said and done, we'll hear that the numbers of infected and dead were in fact much higher.

You can bet what that really means, and is not being said is that the Border agents have been given anti-virals. Why must everything be spun? Of course if indeed this is spread by contact with surfaces instead of being airborne, they wouldn't need masks.

Good point.

Yeah, I really regret having read that book, now! Scenes from it keep coming back to haunt me.

You know, I do not want to make this political, but WTH??? We are worrying about "offending" someone, while children and other people in our country are very sick and DYING???? She is supposed to be HOMELAND SECURITY CHIEF, not POLITICALLY CORRECT CHIEF. Please tell me, how is she protecting our country? How is she doing the job she is supposed to be doing? Sorry, but I did not expect anything else from her, she was my previous gov...sigh (JMO)

ITA. This kind of stuff makes me mad. Not to mention, if she really said that masks would intimidate Mexicans, SHE is the one who is being offensive, insinuating that Mexicans can't understand or would be afraid of masks in the middle of a flu outbreak. And anyway, why is that our concern when our health is the most important thing, not how we "look" to other countries? Next she'll have us sniffing the virus up our noses on purpose so we can "look good."

ITA. Their testing is so slow. I was under the impression we'd sent people down there to help speed up the testing process, but I'm not seeing any effects of that as yet.

Sebelious: daily basis americans updated 11am on case numbers. It changes daily. WHO raised to level 5: Sebelious says they anticipated it but it gives more resources. Trying to contain and stop the spread of the flu. Some schools voluntarily have closed to contain. With seasonal flu there is usually 36k deaths... not sure what the results this flu will be. Vaccine is in development phase.

Dr. Besser: 109 confirmed cases in US means that 109 got tested and confirmed as h1n1 virus. They continue to look for more cases and they are investigating cases (they expect to see a wider spectrum of the disease and number of cases that have not been reported).. For the world community:the impact.. countries that have not prepared need to wake up to the imminent pandemic. Besser says that US government is responding aggressively in the US and developing changing control measures as they learn more.

Napalotano: The US isn't closing its' borders because the who says there is no utility in closing them (obama equates it to shutting the barn door after the horse gets out). Some schools are closing and others not...is due to containment. Sebilius adds that closing schools is under local control but advised by the cdc. With a confirmed case they are encouraging people to stay home...not go to malls, movies, etc..

questions from viewers:

1)Ellen asks can you catch this from parts (car parts) shipped from Mexio. Dr. Besser says no.. the virus will not survive that long. But need to be careful with borders.

2) Murial asks about cancelling trips (relatives with resp. problems) for July. He says no... don't cancel.

Travel today however... there are travel health advisories to Mexico but beyond that no other warnings issued. It may change over time but right now all travel in us is not affected and mass transit in the US not closed right now... could change if the outbreak changes. If you are have fever or are sick you should avoid traveling

3) swine flu in office building... not significant deconamintion steps... just wipe down keyboard with alcohol. CDC site has info on how to decrease spread

4)tsa officers: depends on kind of work doing as to what protection you need to take....front line workers may be in masks... and anyone in an isolation room with a suspected case must wear a mask.

more... sorry for long post

Re Nursebeeme #4. At least TSA got it right. Any mention of the Border patrol officers?

Thanks for the rundown, Nursbeeme for those of us who couldn't watch!

The Department of Homeland Security said Thursday it has not told agents at U.S. airports and border checkpoints that they cannot wear masks to protect from exposure to swine flu.
"The Department of Homeland Security has not issued an order saying our employees cannot wear masks. The health of our employees is of utmost importance to us. And today we are issuing department-wide guidance to our workforce," DHS spokeswoman Sara Kuban told FOX News.
Kuban was responding to a claim made Thursday that The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security issued a guideline banning masks because they look too intimidating. (more at link)

That's a crock. Have we not seen bazillions of pictures of Mexicans wearing masks? Sometimes the stupidity is overwhelming. I think at the root of this is they're afraid other countries will cut off trade and tourism with USA which has already started according to news from a couple of days ago or more.

Reminds me of a photo, "look Ma, no hands, as a kid rides his bicycle." We seem to be saying, "look world, no flu or so little we're not in the least bit worried, " as we close down schools and school districts.

Florida Hospital Caught in Swine Flu Cover-Up?

This is an article from Tuesday, and it begs the question, "Why would the chief medical officer of a hospital invent a fictitious email claiming a tourist had swine flu?"

Article easily explains how the state of Florida got around confirming a case in Orlando.

Sort of reminds me of what's going on in Cancun, a code of silence, and for the same reason--tourism.

Today, Florida is reporting 20 potential cases of swine flu in southern Fl.

From the WHO website:

30 April 2009 -- From today, WHO will refer to the new influenza virus as influenza A(H1N1).

I'll be referring to it as Pork Flu myself...

Nurse - thank YOU! for your notes. I watched part of the session, but got in late and left early :) That's how I like to do things :)

CDS is still showing only 11 states with confirmed cases. But just from reading this thread, I think we are up to 15-20 states. It appears that it is spreading fast (or actually that confirmed cases from days ago are just getting reported). This seems to be so much more serious than the bird flu?

I have to go to the grocery store but no case of the flu where I am that I know about. However I do have a sore throat and I'm thinking I caught a cold from a person that was passing papers to me, who had recently been to the Bay Area, in a hospital for a relative's surgery. I did see her again yesterday, and she seemed to be getting better, so I'm sure it is just the common cold. Don't ya just hate it when something like this happens! I'm becoming a hypochrondiac (sp?) :) (I need a really goofy icon)
