Some of us have been expecting this announcement for a while. She is a very good catch for Baez et al. I'm sure a motion to appear pro hac is in the works and I have no doubts that it will be granted. As far as her role ... she could take lead ... or it could be someone else and she would be available to take over the penalty phase. I'd say that the chances KC will get the DP are significantly decreased with the addition of Lyon to the "dream team." However, I don't think that there is an attorney, living or dead, that could keep KC from being found guilty ... barring any technicality.

I'm still wondering about her role here ...

checking out the Florida Rule (link below), how does she qualify in Florida when she's coming from another state?

http://swartzlenamon.com/deathpenal...alified-criminal-defense-attorneys-in-florida

No motion pro hoc vice - much less an order where the Judge approves her as counsel (at least I haven't seen one)... which is where she would file her qualifications under the Florida rule to start appearing in court, on the record, for the defense.

Do we have that motion anywhere?

Here's an example of a motion pro hoc vice filed in another Florida case:

And, the press release from JB's camp doesn't sound like she's taking over lead so much as being welcomed to the team.

I don't know that she is anything more than another Linda Kennedy Baden here and I agree with the earlier post, she may well disappear into the background just like Kathy Reichs.

I'm thinking that JB had to get someone's name out there so here's a news release, but that is a different ballgame from her signing her name on an official document in the court record.

No offense guys, but this team has already been through one DP qualified attorney who had "creative" differences with JB. I am going to take a back seat to see how long this one will last. I remember all of the brou-ha-ha regarding Kathy Reichs joining the team and now I hear crickets chirping from her corner. This is suspiciously timed for Andrea's book role out, but then again I am kind of a cynic.

Oh I sooooo agree. I give it a few months because today was just a taste for her and she did not look pleased.

I can't believe that this is such perfect timing that she has a book coming out by being KC's DP defense atty. I hope someone brings that to someones attention that it might be a publicity thing. Come on doesn't anyone care that a little girl was murdered. Seems like everybody is out for fame and fortune on this case and it pisses me off. :furious:

She first worked for the Cook County Public Defenders' Office-in the felony trial division, post-conviction/habeas corpus unit, preliminary hearing/first municipal (misdemeanor) unit, and the appeals division. Her last position there was Chief of the Homicide Task Force, a 22-lawyer unit that represents persons accused of homicide.

Andrea has tried more than 130 homicide cases, both within the public defender's office and elsewhere. She has defended more than 30 potential capital cases at the trial level. Of these, she has taken 19 through the penalty phase, and won them all.

In 1990, she founded the Illinois Capital Resource Center and served as its director until joining the University of Michigan Law School faculty in 1995 as an Assistant Clinical Professor. In 2000, she joined the faculty at DePaul.

Professor Lyon is a graduate of Rutgers University and the Antioch School of Law.

But does she have any experience in FLORIDA???>? My guess is that Baez can't find a Floridea-qualified dp atty.

O I C ..

She's one of those lawyers who tries to look like they're sincerely telling the jurors something ..

Meh, doesn't work for me ..
I'm not the least bit impressed .. :snooty:

* She definitely fits in with the rest of Team Casey, looks wise anyways ..
"Well take another piece of my heart, now lady", "You know you've got it if it makes you feel good" I hope JB and crew, "Don't throw Moma off the train" <3 Altogether now, "Whoa, Oh, Sin Sing"

Outrageous infomercial by JB in the courtroom, when introducing her....the minute he said she had a book coming out, I thought -Aha! That's why she's on board! This case has made me very cynical... Love that Judge S. very plainly told her- sorry, can't talk to you yet, no paperwork filed! You'd think JB woulda got that out of the way immediately upon "hiring" her, so she could do more than just sit there today. (Oh, never mind, I forgot- it's JB - he plays by his own rules...he should just be able to intriduce her to the judge and go from there....)He does NOT want to give up that 1st chair!

I wonder if LKB was the link to getting this DP-qualified attorney to come on board? I don't rely much on what people say about themselves on websites, etc., but I can see she is experienced and most likely committed in a serious way to opposing the DP. I can't envision someone like this, with a reputation --but even more, credibility -- to uphold for her future work, signing on to be a figurehead or pawn for JB. We'll see. I think a problem could be resistance from the client. Ms. Lyon doesn't seem to be someone she could easily manipulate. Did my eyes deceive me, or did she possibly pass the defendant a note about in-court behavior today?

It is also proper that we are together with dedicated people like Andrea Lyon who has labored on the front lines trying capital cases for many years and who is now devoting her passion to creating an innocence center at De Paul University. You saved Madison Hobley's life. Together you spared the lives and secured the freedom of 17 men ? men who were wrongfully convicted and rotting in the condemned units of our state prisons. What you have achieved is of the highest calling ? Thank You!

INEPT DEFENSES CLOUD VERDICT

"Who your lawyer is is the single most important fact concerning whether you get the death penalty or not. The single most important fact--which is pretty scary," said Andrea Lyon, a University of Michigan law professor who previously tried more than 100 murder cases in Cook County without having a client sentenced to death.
Lyon is known for her painstaking preparation, including research on the defendant and his background so that she can place the crime and the criminal into context. Was the defendant a victim of horrendous abuse? Is he mentally ill or retarded?

~There is so much more ... I will post more later ... Emma's a hungry hippo right now!!

ADL is not very media friendly, read this from WFTV.

"Professor Lyon has extensive experience trying death penalty cases and before walking into the hearing, she was not interested in talking to Eyewitness News."Is it going to take someone like you to get Casey off the hook?" asked WFTV reporter Mark Boyle."My comments will come out, we have no comments right now," replied Lyons."Is there any reason you took on this case," asked Boyle."Please get that out of my face," Lyon replied."

Did my eyes deceive me, or did she possibly pass the defendant a note about in-court behavior today?

I saw that too but we'll never know what the note actually said.

Ya know, I would think that she should have known she wasn't allowed to speak today, until she is approved. Near the end she stood up and tried to state she wasn't available on certain dates for the next hearing and the judge had to remind her she wasn't allowed to speak. Then he allowed Jb to speak for her.

Agree. If she's keeping up, she has to have perused the FLA rules about DP qualified counsel and thus to have known that she was required to file a certification immediately. And a motion to be admitted PHV. She should also have been aware of the state's motion seeking proper identification of DP qualified counsel. She went along with the whole silly in-court debut thing, so she got what was deserved when the state objected to her participation.

Social Justice ... can someone explain that? Does it mean if your are poor, you are not guilty? Or does it mean if you lack education, you are not guilty? Does being a woman mean your're not guilty?
Does it mean if you are considered a minority, you are not guilty? Does it mean if you are not intelligent, you are not guilty? If so, then it is pretty easy to figure out who MUST be guilty.
Is this what she means by social justice?....don't know. I am simply guessing.

According to a profile published in the Chicago Lawyer magazine in August 2007, Lyon had a perfect record of winning life sentences in each of the capital cases she's taken through the penalty phase, which at that time was 19

Andrea Lyon: Fighting for lives, believing in redemption

(...) For Lyon, learning as much as possible about her client is essential to defending a death penalty case. “People sometimes do monstrous things, but they aren’t only monsters. That’s myth or movies — that’s not who people are,” Lyon said. “They are complicated. They care about
other people. They’ve been hurt. Many of them are very, very damaged people who’ve been abused, sometimes literally since birth.”

snipped
At times intense, the 6-foot-tall Lyon has an imposing presence, but,
said Crystal Marchigiani, chief of the public defender’s Homicide Task Force, “she’s very open, nonjudgmental. She’s a very empathetic friend. “She wants to know everything about you. She’s a person with a great interest in people, which I think is why her clients revere her the way they do,” Marchigiani said.

She's been preaching to the choir for long time there in Cook County. I am surprised her resume doens't list ACLU on it.

Does anyone think that the addition of Ms. Lyon is not necessarily to win the case, but to keep Casey off death row during the penalty phase?
