Breaking news: police have suspended search and are now calling this a criminal investigation.
I'll get a link. Just saw this on Local channel 4 news.
Edited:Oops I see it has been posted.

This image of a statement from the Searcy Chief of Police is taken from a tweet by a reporter (@AlexisKATV). Sorry the quality is so poor, but I can't find another source for it yet.

Here is a portion of the statement:

"At this point in our investigation ... we cannot reasonably believe this child is lost, or hiding waiting to be discovered anywhere near the area he could've traveled on his own. While we are just as committed to finding Malik and the truth behind his disappearance, we've depleted the usefulness of the volunteers to re-search areas that now must be cleared by trained personnel and experts who are focused on the only possible remaining scenarios.

<snip>

As with any active criminal investigation, the details of such cannot be discussed ..."

"December 1, 2014

Since the start of our search for two (2) year old Malik Drummond, the Searcy Police Department has utilized all available resources to locate a child that had reportedly “wandered off” from his home on West Park Street. As you all know, an alert was immediately sent out through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) as well as an Amber Alert. Naturally, ...we immediately entertained the possibility of criminal activity being a factor in his disappearance. While the search went on for Malik based on the reported information, Searcy detectives with assistance from state police investigators and FBI agents, conducted a very active investigation under a much larger range of possibilities. This investigation has been kept separate from the very large, around the clock search operation being conducted from the command centers.

That search has included, in addition to law enforcement and other emergency services personnel, hundreds of citizen volunteers, search teams from around the country and representatives from the NCMEC. Multiple K9 teams have also been deployed. From the start our city has attempted to conduct an organized, safe and documented search, spanning several miles in the hopes of finding Malik alive and well.

Our search has included, among other things: all land areas in and around the city, residences (houses and apartments), abandoned houses, buildings, crawl spaces, dumpsters, vehicles, parks, drains/sewers (using cameras from the water department), ponds, creeks, and the local river (Little Red). In addition to resources such as trained K9s, we’ve searched these areas by air with helicopters, divers from the White County Sheriff’s Office and boats from Arkansas Game & Fish. Last night, a full one week after the reported disappearance time, officers conducted a vehicle/pedestrian check point in the neighborhood of Malik’s disappearance. All passing motorists and pedestrians were questioned in the hope that anyone remembered seeing Malik the week before. Nothing related to his reported disappearance was learned.

At this point in our investigation, considering the statistical information provided by the experts from NCMEC, as well as the extensive range of area searched and researched, we cannot reasonably believe this child is lost, or hiding waiting to be discovered anywhere near the area he could’ve traveled on his own. While we are just as committed to finding Malik and the truth behind his disappearance, we’ve depleted the usefulness of volunteers to re-search areas that now must be cleared by trained personnel and experts who are focused on the only possible remaining scenarios.

The Command Center, originally set up at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church and yesterday morning moved to the Searcy Fire Department’s Central Station, is being suspended effective immediately. As new information is learned by investigators, it’s possible the need to re-open the center for volunteers could arise; for the time being, however, the need no longer exists. I can’t stress enough how appreciative we all are for the wonderful outpouring of concern and assistance has been throughout this horrific ordeal.

Our investigation is ongoing as is the search for Malik. This agency will not stop until he is found and the truth is discovered. We’re asking for all citizens to be very clue conscience and report any information learned to us immediately. As with any active criminal investigation, the details of such cannot be discussed and we’re asking for patience and understanding from all people not to cloud our efforts with false leads, rumors and innuendo. To be candid, this is a very serious matter and we’re appealing to everyone’s best nature and sense of responsibility. We’ll continue to provide the most updated information as we can. Thank you all in advance for your cooperation and assistance.

Jeremy Clark
Chief of Police"

Chief of Police Jeremy Clark's letter is very well expressed and thorough, considering the circumstances. This community's and all concerned have all had such a great response. Hopefully, all their efforts will lead to answers. Thank you, RazTaz for posting it.

The thing that gets me about the potential of an accidental scenario is this: If it was truly an accident, then why might someone go to such great lengths to cover things up? This is indicates to me there must be something else hinky surrounding the incident (negligence, drug/alcohol use, etc). Of course there is always the possibility that the person is just afraid of getting in trouble and/or being blamed by family members/LE, but I just don't get the whole going to great lengths to cover up scene if there was nothing hinky...then again, if it was a scenario like he fell and hit his head or something, maybe someone could be afraid that the police might try to say otherwise...maybe the injury is such that it would not be able to be definitely proven to be accident...

jmo

That was my thinking also. By accidental I meant maybe someone struck the child or shook him as punishment and maybe Malik hit his head and and fractured his skull (or some other injury) and it caused his death. I do believe that anyone in the home would be aware of whatever happened because I just don't think one could keep it from the other. I just want them to find this little fellow b/c I can't even begin to imagine what his mother must be going through.

I was putting up Christmas decorations and just sat down to order pizza for dinner and I looked at twitter (I have the #FindMalik search still open) my stomach dropped when I saw over 20+ new tweets when they have been so little the last few days, I thought he had been found :(

Hmm . . . . Not "being suspended as of this afternoon," and not "being suspended at such-and-such time today," . . . but . . ."being suspended effective immediately".

The Chief's carefully worded statement leaves me with a heavy heart and a sense of dread.

The fact that at this juncture, LE feels there's no need for the Command Center to remain open, breaks my heart.

This horrific ordeal may be taking a turn for the worse (and I hope I am wrong!).

I believe that if in fact something did happen in the home it was accidental and not intentional. Could the responsible adult hide Malik in a place and have been able to talk someone else into moving the body to an area outside of Searcy altogether? Maybe the plea was "I didn't mean to hurt the baby but now it's too late but I can't go to jail because I have to take care of my kids". Maybe even the other adult in the home. Just thinking out loud and it's JMO>

Baby Elaina :( ( sorry that was intentional/accidental as in i didnt' know a beating would result in death , moo )

Monday afternoon, Corporal Steve Hernandez told members of the media that volunteers are no longer needed in the search for Malik as investigators "cannot reasonably believe that the child is lost, or hiding waiting to be discovered anywhere near the area he could've traveled on his own."

Though police have not indicated it in the past, Hernandez told THV11 that Malik's disappearance has been under an active criminal investigation since the beginning of the search; the only difference is that now police are calling off the search.

I am wondering if the stepmother ran a bath and left it unattended....maybe to check on dinner or Malik's twin and poor little Malik found his way into the bathroom and drowned. Stepmom panics and, concerned she will lose her remaining children, as well as her partner, she covers it up. Of course, this would mean she disposed of the body all by herself and without waking the father.

This is all purely my opinion - While my heart is wanting to hold on to the hope that Malik is alive somewhere, my head is telling me that he never left his house that day and that at least one of the adults involved knows what happened.
