Garrido's brother said Phillip left California after learning that fellow drug dealers “had a contract out on him.” Relatives said Garrido moved to Reno when he was about 19 years old. QUESTION: Are there records to confirm this?

Donna Ann Lass, age 26, South Lake Tahoe, September 6, 1970 (not found)

Garrido's parents, Patricia L. (Smith) and Manuel Garrido, divorce January 1971.

Christine Marie Eastin, age 19, Hayward, 1/18/1971 (not found)

In 1972, Garrido picked up two 14-year old girls from the Antioch Public Library, 501 W. 18th Street, Antioch, took them on a joyride, gave them drugs, reportedly took them to his house where he had a shed. He took one of the girls to the rural Riverview Motel, 3120 E. 18th St, Antioch, where she was repeatedly sexually assaulted. Garrido was charged. However, the prosecution was dropped when the young victim refused to testify. Incidentally, the Antioch Library is directly across the street from what was then known as Antioch Junior High (now Antioch Middle School), down the street from Antioch Senior High (now Antioch High School), and very near Fremont Elementary and Marsh Elementary schools.

I don't know this just also makes me think of what Manuel said about Patricia and Phillip bent towards bringing virgins home.

So in 1972, Manuel was no longer around. His brother Ron was probably not their either given he is 7 years older. I wonder if that gave Phillip greater freedom to bring girls to the shed??? Additionally, I'm wondering about where Phillip really lived - even though it says at 19 he moved, that doesn't mean he was there from 20-21 yrs old? I might have missed something though. I wonder if he moved back when the divorce happened?

And, this must not be all of the story because the other article says there was another guy. When did that guy exit the scene?

The cbs link

Antioch police Lt. Leonard Orman told reporters at a news conference that the victim and a friend met then-21-year-old Garrido and another man near the public library on West 18th Street, CBS station KPIX-TV reported.

I would be interested in a wider search from 1991 until Jaycees second daughter was born also. He said that he changed his life after her birth. He also gave LE a HUGE clue when he said he gave up prostitutes then. Wonder if they have interviewed any known prostitutes from that time period who worked in the area.

Sunnie, interesting ... likely that Garrido was trying to recuse himself from those prostitute murders. Given the rest of his manipulative behaviors, I think he just gave himself away.

Perhaps we need to go back to his manifesto and see if there are more clues.

It also makes me wonder, given his religious bent, his fondness of virgins and innocent girls, if there is something else underlying his crimes. In other words, I have to wonder if he saw as not only not enough of a challenge, but that the were not as valuable because he couldn't initiate them and possibly that they were tainted int he eyes of god and needed punishment or were unworthy to live? Of course, this could have been his justification for doing away with evidence and making sure no woman that was adult and capable spoke to police.

He is so bizarre, nothing would surprise me!! He had a lot of different types of criminal behavior, but if my understanding is correct, most criminals escalate their behaviors. They don't get the same thrill from the same actions being repeated. It opens up a lot of other possibilities unfortunately.

Yes, it could simply be an escalating the thrill factor and he went from wanting nonconsensual sex to ..... who knows.

Hell, he's so screwed up he probably thought well of himself because he wasn't doing prostitutes and masterbating in public anymore. Remember him saying something at his rape trial, like "it's not like I'm robbing anyone or anything". This guy thought he wasn't robbing anyone?????? What about robbing them of their innocence? Their virginity? Their life as they had known it? Their self-esteem? Oh wait.....that's right.....he had a book on that he could give to Jaycee to read, so that must have made it okay. :furious:

I kept wondering why I felt confused... this is probably a coincidence, but both of these were on 18th St about 1 mile apart.

1998 (NOV, 19) Police receive report of attempted kidnapping on E. 18th St. just West of Hillcrest Ave., Antioch. Man tries to pull women from sidewalk into the bushes. (very near Walnut Avenue)

1972, Garrido picked up two 14-year old girls from the Antioch Public Library, 501 W. 18th Street, Antioch - directly across the street from what was then known as Antioch Junior High (now Antioch Middle School)

So, do any locals know if the 1998 incident is fairly close to any of these schools or something else? Was the 1998 attempted kidnapping a prostitute (I thought it was but now I realize I may have just assumed that) or a teenage or a young woman?

Also, have people already discussed whether Garrido had some presence in Tracy, CA?

I keep finding the same two references to it and nothing else.

And, this seems like a slightly different (or else ill-written) version of 1972

In the 1972 case, Garrido, then 21, was arrested on charges of suspicion of rape, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and providing drugs to a minor after the girl told police she and a female friend met Garrido and a second man at a public library and accompanied them to a motel, where she was drugged and raped.

Nothing has been discussed that I know of. There's a direct road from Brentwood to Tracy/Stockton and, especially in the 70s, it was common for people living in the Brentwood area to go there for drugs etc. It was the easiest larger city to get to.

It's all within 1 mile including the Walnut St. House.

When I was looking for job, I also had more than 1 place to work so I had to tell them no. Maybe its difficult in other jobs to say that because there are few oportinities.

Tosco: For wat company are you working for? Its good to know this in case I would have to move to Madrid

I thought I read a while back that the Garrios could have originally been from Tracy. But also someone on another forum had a copied bit - looked like from Garridos blog - that said in both Tracy, CA and Antioch, CA. I think that was transferred over to *************.

A few days ago we were talking about the fires in the backyard. I was just reading through an older CNN article and came across this:
"My dad said he never saw a young woman," said Russo, who added that her father, 94-year-old Dante Confetti, considered Garrido to be a "kind of strange, reclusive, kind of an angry kind of guy."

She said the one-story house's backyard was obscured by trees and ringed by a wooden fence.

Her family's last contact with Garrido was last fall, she said. "He was burning something in the backyard and my home health aide called the fire department," Russo said.

"He was really pissed off," she said. "Came over to the house and started yelling."

It's a pretty good article, but this part in particular jumped out at me because I don't remember reading it before.

Garrido in Reno when Tahoe woman vanished in 1970

“As soon as I heard about the (Dugard) case last week I thought that this could be something related to my sister’s disappearance,” said Mary Pilker of Sioux Falls, S.D., the sister of Donna Ann Lass. Lass, a nurse at the Sahara Hotel-Casino who vanished Sept. 6, 1970, after leaving work at the casino and never arriving home.

Woah!! You know Las Vegas is not all so different than the Bay Area . There is always a lot of tourists, run aways, business travelers and prostitutes in Las Vegas. There is a certain portion of the population that is transient. In the Bay Area, this was a time of Height Ashbury and the hippie movement. There was therefore a large transient population there. Add to that the religious groups (Hare Krishnas, Peoples Temple, Synanon), and there were a lot of people that no one would ever miss. He really did pick hunting grounds with low risk of discovery unfortunately.

Due to the mild weather there have always been a lot of "free spirits and homeless people in the bay area. There are seedy elements, but in that day there was a lot of "free love" and religious and sexual freedoms being explored. Very bizarre time for the bay area. My parents, who were very over protective, never thought twice about letting us go to San Francisco over Christmas vacation to shop. We would ride BART and be gone all day. We would go in a group of 5 or 6 of us, but I know that we are blessed that nothing ever happened to us. We would laugh about being offered drugs, membership into a commune or to go to "parties on nob hill". Five high school girls together were not too out of place, as it was vacation time, but we didn't know the city or the dangers that were there. I could see the area as a perfect hunting ground.
