I believe the police would have a stack load of evidence. I don't think they would risk getting this one wrong considering the nature of the crime.
I know that some people think the police were a little "trigger-happy" with their arrest, trying to bring the local townsfolk back to a feeling of security, and so they rushed into it.
I can assure you all that police never make accusations like this without substantial evidence. If it turns out he was innocent, it would have huge ramifications for the police, and they'd rather still be looking for the real criminal and have the media hounding them to do their job better and hurry up, than to suffer the public humiliation of getting the wrong guy.
It's like in the game of cluedo, you don't make your accusations until you've ruled out all other possible suspects. You get one shot at it, so don't go messing it up.
