The shoe shop may no longer be there now. I sourced this info from Google Maps (captured in 2009) and the shoe shop did have a 'closing down sale' sign in the window. Are any of the locals able to enlighten us as to what is there now?

The shoe shop is currently empty and for lease:

And if memory serves correctly, he actually said she left her purse at home. Yeah, yeah - I know. But to him, her purse would be the wallet thing.

I don't think he said she left her handbag at home.

If only we could see that CCTV clip, we might be able to see if she has her bag with her at that point in time!

Thinking about the mysterious man.....

If Mystery Man (hereon called MM in this post, for the sake of brevity) was captured on the CCTV at 01:41, he potentially continued to follow Jill. If she was aware of him she may have been feeling uncomfortable, which may have inspired the phone call to her brother two minutes later.

If MM spoke to her while she was was on the phone then
a) that could be the voice/s her bro heard and
b) could have made her say to her bro something like 'hang on a minute', and the call was cut at this point, hence her brother calling her back.

Does anyone else find it a little odd LE are saying they are trying to identify MM ? Am I reading too much into it or does it give the impression they have an idea who it might be? So often with a face/figure caught on CCTV they turn it over to MSM and the general public to ask if anyone recognises the person, although if this MM is the perp, seeing his face published may force his hand.

MOO

Agree with all this. Also, it is fine to speculate on websleuths about the crime, but it's cruel and hurtful to do it on the Facebook page, where the victim's friends and family are going to read it.

Also a reminder that family and friends may read Websleuths too. Often in a Google search we show up first.

Great article on Daily Life.

I am thinking that if the Turkish food shop was open, those witnesses would be quite key. It may have been a good place to stop and make a phone call as it would be well lit.

I hope those male witnesses in the background do come forward. You'd think if they were at the food shop too they'd possibly be on CCTV or be able to be identified by the staff at the food store. The fact that LE haven't made a public callout for information about this shop or customers there may mean this avenue of enquiry has been expired.

This is what gives me confidence that this case may be solved fairly quickly - SOMEONE has to have seen SOMETHING that night, if an attack or abduction happened in the streets.

Also, this is offtopic, but Alasya is probably the tastiest Turkish restaurant in Melbourne - if anyone's going to the area to look around, it's worth getting lunch there!

In my opinion Keentoknow made a good point about predator behaviour, that there is no empathy for the victim whom they see as 'prey'. A victim is not responsible for being stalked/attacked by a predator(s) looking for 'prey'. They were 'preyed' upon by a predator with intent to attack or worse.

A few further comments. IMO its best to be mindful about not blaming the victim for being attacked as many victims of rape and brutal assault will testify - from their own first hand experience, supported by Hospital staff, Police investigators/prosecutors and Health & Welfare Rape counsellors. To blame the victim is a serious lack of empathy and a form of emotional violence, in my opinion.

Everyone keeps mentioning that it's odd he called her 100 times. I know when my exhusband was on a night out and not home one morning at about 1:30am when I woke up I called him continually until about 3:30am, turns out he was
Blind rotten drunk at his mates place. I was furious because I was worried something may have happened to him. I probably called him hundreds of times because I was worried and wanted to make sure he was safe! I'm sure that people would think it was strange or OTT if he went missing too!

I am nearly 28 so close to Jills age and my husband and I used to go out at night drinking with friends quite often, was nothing odd about it as we were both young with no children. I used to walk home from lots of different places after a night out rather than wait for a cab when I could be home already.

New here...Hi.

Just wanted to add a few things to timeline. Her face book says she was seen by a friend at Swanston street at 8pm on friday. It also says she was seen at 10pm at fad gallery.

Point of my post is to show that my opinion is I think both Jills and Toms behaviour/actions is pretty normal for a young married couple

Fishy...fishy..fishy!

Bag (or, whatever you may choose to call it! - please don't start that one again! ;) ) planted...

LE searching their basement/underground....

*shudder*

Maybe I didn't explain myself properly. I didn't mean the phone died then. I meant that it was strange that just after she calls her brother, she doesn't answer when he calls back. Does that make sense?

It is quite likely that if the call to her brother ended normally, that she switched the phone off herself and put it in her jacket pocket (if it had a pocket). Then something has happened and the now dead, switched off phone is still with her, whereever she is, or the person/s who intercepted her have the phone. MOO

Welcome to SLEUTHING! ;-)

:Welcome1:

If you trawl back through the thread, apparently a woman who owns a food shop on Sydney road did hear screams that night. Personally I didn't read that piece of information in MSM but, I definitely read it in this thread.

I got the information from a video interview with locals, the link is back a few pages now, I'll go looking for it in a minute.

This may have already been discussed but to me it sounds like whatever happened to Jill, occurred just after she finished her call with her brother. He says he rang her back when he went downstairs but she didn't answer. I don't know if her phone had been switched off or she just didn't answer it. I can't think of any reason why she would have voluntarily turned off her phone before she got home. If it was switched off, then the person/s who abducted her has done that. This person just didn't stumble into her path at the time she hung up from her brother in my opinion. She was being watched or followed, probably from Sydney Street and they followed her into Hope Street. Her brother says he could hear male voices in the background but I don't know if this was through the whole call or at the end. If it was at the end then they I believe were likely involved as it is just too coincidental otherwise.

Having done a google earth walk along her route home, Hope Street which is where the police think she was whilst on the phone to her brother, looks like a scary place for a woman to be walking alone very late at night. I know she had done it plenty of times before but I wouldn't do it. I don't know if it had much street lighting. And so many places where an attacker could hide.

The Mystery Man could be someone the police can identify on the footage. I have a suspicion, not founded in anything - just a hunch, that MM may be a work colleague.

New here - am very worried about all the innuendo re why they weren't socialising together. At Jill's age I was newly married to my husband (still happily together 27 years later). I was a social, life of the party travel agent and he a reserved, introverted lawyer. Our worlds did not mesh socially - on Friday nights my life looked like Jill's - out with colleagues till the wee hours and walking home to Darlinghurst through the Cross. I knew my route well and thought I was safe because the streets were so busy.

Difficult to see how a person on foot could abduct another person on foot, with no one seeing anything. I wonder about the cars parked near where she was last seen on the video and if any of them had the engine running, if LE can tell?

it doesn't sound like the phone was switched off, it was ringing before going to voicemail until 8am then it started going straight to voicemail.
