Broadcaster Derryn Hinch has been fined $100,000 for contempt of court after breaching a suppression order when revealing details of the past criminal history of Jill Meagher's killer, Adrian Ernest Bayley.

Supreme Court Justice Stephen Kaye said the contempt committed by Hinch was "particularly serious" and involved "grossly irresponsible" conduct.

Justice Kaye said Hinch was an experienced journalist who fully understood the importance of suppression orders.

EXPERT SAYS PAROLE NOT APROPRIATE FOR DANGEROUS REPEAT OFFENDERS
Justice Geoffrey Nettle said the rape and murder of Jill Meagher was a heinous case. That her rape was savage and degrading and that she was violently strangled...Justice Nettle pointed out that Bayley thought prostitutes would be easy targets, and he went into quite a bit of detail about how those women were very violently raped and humiliated and how shocking injuries were caused to them...A leading expert on sexual assault matters believes repeat violent sexual offenders shouldn't be given the option of parole. Professor Caroline Taylor from Edith Cowan University told Simon Lauder that the Bayley case shows that the justice system doesn't always take violence against women as seriously as it should... this article is well worth a read IMO with a view to the underreporting of crimes against women and how these are minimised within the justice system.

Some socio/political/legal changes, long overdue, seem to be in progress. Lets continue to watch this space.

Unbelievable!!!

Parole Reforms Pass State Parliament After Adult Parole Board Review
by MATT JOHNSTON HERALD SUN OCTOBER 31, 2013 12:01AM

COMMUNITY safety is now written in law as the most important consideration for parole decision-making, after the first reforms to the system passed State Parliament.
The law changes were based on recommendations from a review of the Adult Parole Board by former High Court judge Ian Callinan, following the rape and murder of Jill Meagher.
Corrections Minister Edward O'Donohue said the law changes passed yesterday would allow for a full-time chair of the parole board, and for time limits on board appointments.
Some welcome progress towards review of the operation of the Adult Parole Board.

Just wondering if anyone's been reading the furore over Det. Sen. Sgt. Ron Iddles using a shot from Jill's crime scene during talks on violent crime he does around the community?

It's total BS, and I think the people responsible ought to be deeply ashamed of themselves.

IMO, DSS Ron Iddles is about as close to a real life hero as it gets. I'm a total fangirl.

The photograph was presented at A FUNDRAISER FOR PROSTATE CANCER.... Jill's body as such is not shown online and wonder why it was shown at a MALE cancer fundraiser. The violent details of her rape haven't been in MSM.

Quote

A senior detective has broken down while giving his reasons for showing a crime scene photo of murdered Melbourne woman Jill Meagher at a fundraiser.

The image of Ms Meagher's body was displayed by Detective Senior Sergeant Ron Iddles as part of a talk on homicide investigations.

The graphic photo was shown to 400 people at a Prostate Cancer Foundation fundraiser in Bendigo.

End quote.

He may be a very respected person but Jill didn't have a prostate. Any fundraisers for White Ribbon?

Jill Meagher's grieving parents face tough times

December 12, 2013

JILL Meagher's grieving parents are facing a bleak second Christmas without their daughter, with her father battling an incurable brain disease.

George and Edith McKeon also said they were on the brink of financial ruin as Mr McKeon faces a complex civil law suit on the other side of the world.

The man who raped and killed Melbourne woman Jill Meagher has been placed in prison protection, as fellow inmates blame him for recent changes to the parole system.

You have got to be kidding me!!:banghead:
He deserves to be in the general population getting a bit of what he has dished out over the last two decades! Sorry (normally wouldn't say such a thing) but that man is a true monster. When you read the transcripts of what he did to those poor women (and no doubt Jill :*(..) it's utterly sickening that he gets to be protected. Who protected those women from him?? Disgraceful.

Finally, some much welcome legislative changes to the Victorian Parole system:

Tough Reforms to Parole Laws To Be Introduced in Parliament Following Scathing Review of Parole System
MICHELLE AINSWORTH HERALD SUN MARCH 12, 2014 12:00AM

TOUGH reforms to parole laws will be introduced in Parliament today after a scathing review of the parole system. Corrections Minister Edward O’Donohue said the laws would deliver on the 23 changes to the Victorian Parole system recommended by former High Court judge Ian Callinan.
“The new parole system announced today, together with the reforms that have already been introduced, ensure that community safety is the highest priority in parole decisions,” Mr O’Donohue said.

The Callinan review was ordered after the murder of Jill Meagher by a parolee, Adrian Bayley. Mr O’Donohue said the changes would deliver on the Government’s promise to make Victoria’s parole system the country’s toughest.

Jill Meagher’s husband Tom speaks out about violence against women and what victims have taught him
TOM MINEAR HERALD SUN APRIL 18, 2014

JILL Meagher’s husband Tom has spoken out about violence against women, saying he has been inundated with stories of sexual abuse from thousands of women...

Can somebody explain - is Bayley's previous criminal history still subject to a supression order, or is that just when the trial was ongoing?

I'd be disturbed if Australia put permanent supression orders in place - even in the UK where rules are strict, media is allowed to reveal convicted persons' criminal histories, after a verdict.

zwiebel....Australia, as a Commonwealth country, our judicial system is along the same lines as UK.

The suppression order on Bayley's history was lifted as soon as the trial was over.

Once a person is arrested & charged, the case then goes into sub-judice period. That period ends when the trial is over.

Thank you for this post BigT. It's reassuring to know that Tom has sufficient strength to channel his grief & violent thoughts towards Bailey into a positive direction. His involvement in the White Ribbon Campaign is appropriate IMO given that he, his wife and their family & friends have become victims of a violent, repeat rapist & murderer. He states that 'most men are not violent' and advocates that those men be leaders among their peer group & challenge other men when they say derogatory comments about women etc. Jill certainly found a 'good man' there.
