I was actually replying to didi's post, however thank you for your reply.

So let's just talk about Australia and forget the rest of the world at this point in time. I wonder how many female teachers there are? I wonder how many male teachers there are?

I wonder how many of them have had sexual relationships with students? Not just an odd one here and there. How many? What is the actual number or ratio?

Generalisations can be very dangerous (and slanderous) statements. I'm happy to wait until you get faster internet for the stats. :)

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.../25/how-prevalent-teacher-pupil-relationships

It is difficult to gauge how prevalent inappropriate pupil-teacher relationships in schools are as statistics are difficult to obtain and anecdotal evidence can be misleading.

" The 16 year-old boy that has sex with the hot teacher is going to be called a stud and goes back to long standing beliefs that the boy is a stud and the girl is a *advertiser censored*," she said.

A spokeswoman from the Coroners Court of Victoria told news.com.au the findings, including whether any cause of death had been determined, would not be released to the public until further notice.

“No details of the examination have been released to the public, only to the family,” she said.

The spokeswoman confirmed authorities were still waiting on toxicology results, however.

Yes and not having those toxicology reports is likely contributing to why there has been no arrest yet.

It's sickening that the possible (likely IMO) murderer will be present, pretending to be a decent person. Time will catch up with them, and they will look even more despicable for the facade and attending their own murder victims funeral, on top of the murder itself.

People that resort to substance abuse are generally weak minded people IMO. They are usually also on a sympathy and attention trip. At AR's age he has no excuses to not get some therapeutic help to deal with his problems.
I have personal experience in this and unless an adult is willing to help themselves no one else can do it for them. My own daughter died at a young age from alcoholism. She went and talked to a Dr. and the Dr. gave her options and she didn't take them. But yet the great Aussie drinking culture.

I am very sorry for the loss of your daughter.

I have to disagree entirely with your statement that people who resort to substance misuse are generally weak minded and/or after an attention trip. I have worked in the field of trauma for 15 years. Many people who have experienced childhood trauma use drugs to mask psychological pain. For example, 80% of women in prison in Vic are there for drug related crime. Of that figure, 80% have experienced childhood sexual abuse. Also, when you are addicted, 'choice' and resources are not so easy to apply compared with those without such a history. This is not to say that others who have experienced trauma don't take a very different path, however in my experience, and statistically speaking, drug abuse can more often reflect trauma history, rather than 'weakness'.

Thanks for that, although some are invalid, unfortunately.

Again I ask... what percentage of teachers does this implicate?

The 1 in 6 doesn't really gel either, as the same 6 could all be alluding about the 1 situation, if the polls were conducted using samples from specific areas, so a lot more qualified date would be needed to validate your assertions. The unions, who would be the first port of call for any teacher under suspicion of such actions (and yes there are some who are guilty of it) as in all professions, deem them as 'rare'.

It is also well known that you can get data to give you any outcome / result that you want, depending on how it's manipulated and how you organise / select your sample, so unless the survey was done under very structured, objective conditions with clearly defined terminology so that different degrees of understanding of words used in the questions could be completely eliminated, the validity of their findings also lends itself to question.

Actually, I'm curious as to why you chose to 'teacher-bash' as unless Karen was a teacher, which IMHO she wasn't, then this is irrelevant anyway.

However, a big thank you to all of the wonderful teachers out there who do such a great job.

Thanks for posting the links. You cite 12 cases out of which 5 were underage students. The others cases cited were all with students of the age of consent, most were 17, but still inappropriate for a student/teacher sexual relationship and not okay with education system protocol.

I also respect your different opinion, but don't totally agree with it. And then from what i see there are kids from good homes that have not been abused and still choose to do drugs because of peer group pressure, and it's epedemic, because they can't say No to drugs. IMO people who have been abused need good counselling to work through their pain and not substance abuse. The dangers of that are irreperable.

Ahhh! I'm not teacher bashing. I respect and admire them. I don't know how they do it.

The subject came up a while back about Women having affairs with teens. I had responded that it does happen and used teachers as an example simply because it does get found out and reported on in the media. I personally know of 3 cases that happened within a 12 month period although one of those cases was a female teacher and a female student.

The links worked for me.

I am not trying to fudge or misrepresent data. I simply googled the search term I stated earlier and copied the first 2 pages of links.

This is an article about a female student and male teacher that includes a statement that is the closest thing I can find to a stat.

https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&...CCEwAw&usg=AFQjCNHXno7SMoxSwwonOw7HBYjFwCgDGA

"Every year, an estimated 25 teachers are suspended or deregistered in Australia for sex offences — many, if not most, because of inappropriate relationships with their students. Yet this, say experts, may be just a shadow of what is really happening in schools"

I really think we're getting OT so need to put this to bed and get back to Karen. The latest data I can find very quickly is from 2014 when there were 264,065 full-time teachers (we won't worry about casual or part -time), so let's just use the 25 you mention, and I think that works out to 0.00946%. So 'very rare'. However, that is still 0.00946% too much, but they're out there everywhere, unfortunately, infiltrating all professions.

Over and out on this topic and yes, I respect and admire them too. :)

We had a teacher back in the day that used to feel up the girls in class when he called them up to his desk, and my friend at the time told her parents and he was reported. I don't know why they do it either, it's just not right.

Yes it seems a bit strange to have a page for her. Surely BR would be responsible for funeral expenses? SR is an adult with no dependents, so it's quite perplexing, unless it was just a knee-jerk reaction by a well meaning friend who felt the need to do something.

Yes perplexing. I'm looking at that as if it's expected SR will be on her own soon.

I agree back on topic.

Well she has a boyfriend and i would think other good friends and Karen's family that will be there for her to help her if that's the case.

Thankyou.

Yep, I agree they need counselling rather than substance abuse, which makes their life worse, and if it were that easy to make that choice (in the face of complex trauma/intergenerational trauma/psycho-social factors etc) we wouldn't have a drug epidemic in that particular cohort I was referring to.

I will be watching msn tommorrow to see if they have anything on Karen's funeral. Will light a candle for her.

My thoughts are with the real people who genuinely grieve and loved Karen.
I wish I had met her, she sounded like a wonderful person.

Why are we talking about student teacher relationships, sure it happens, most of it is kept secret for obvious reasons, not everything that happens in the world ends in msm or Facebook.
