Mother of murdered child Kiesha Weippeart asked undercover cop to help her avoid jail

By court reporter Jamelle Wells
Updated 2 minutes ago

Abrahams sat hunched over with her head down as the video of her conversation with an undercover police officer was played to the New South Wales Supreme Court.

In the video, she told the undercover officer Kiesha was "like jelly" after she fell and hit her head.

Abrahams said she did not want to go to jail, and cried as she told the officer she tried to revive Keisha by putting her under a shower.

where and when would they have confided in an undercover policeperson?
would they have integrated into their social group pretending to befriend them and gain their confidence? you would think kristi and robert would have too scared to tell anybody let alone a stranger?
i wondered when kristis sad childhood would rear its ugly head, its a sad fact abused neglected children can go on to be bad parents themselves, but its also a fact many of these sad children also grow up to be wonderful parents, determined their own children will have a life of love and hope.
its all so sad and thousands of children are dying worldwide because of these monster parents.

'She was awake but like, not awake': court hears Kiesha's mother's confession

By Paul Bibby June 27, 2013, 12:54 p.m.

A few weeks after she murdered and then buried her six-year-old daughter, Kristi Abrahams confessed the crime to an undercover police officer, pleading with him to help her avoid getting caught.

In the final day of Abrahams' sentencing hearing

Defiant parents a target as truancy fines increased

MICHELLE AINSWORTH
HERALD SUN
APRIL 26, 2013 7:40PM

PARENTS who don't pay a $70 penalty for a truant child could see the fine increase tenfold.

Earlier this year, the Herald Sun revealed that from next year, parents of students who missed five days of school without good reason would be issued with a notice asking them to explain.

If the explanation is deemed unacceptable, they could face a $70 fine.

Under the changes introduced into Parliament last week, the fine could be increased up to $704 if the matter were taken to court.

Kiesha attended school just four times in her short life, prompting seven home visits from education officers.

However, Abrahams would not open the door to them and eventually she rang the Department of Education and told them she didn't want 'people bothering in our business', the statement said.

She was then told the department would take legal action as Kiesha's attendance at school was compulsory.

NSW government lashes out over criticism of child protection system

By state political reporter Sarah Gerathy
Updated Wed Jun 26, 2013 2:29pm AEST

The Public Service Association's Robin Croon says many child abuse cases are not being fully investigated because of staff and resource shortages.

"Of all the reports of risk of serious harm, only about 30, sometimes 35 per cent get one face to face visit by a caseworker," she said.

Mrs Weippeart, who took delivery yesterday afternoon of new T-shirts printed with an image of Kiesha on a purple background, in honour of the girl's favourite colour, said she hoped the media and police would start referring to Kiesha as ''Weippeart'', rather than Abrahams.

''[Chris] said to me this morning: 'Mum, if [Kristi] was having problems with Kiesha, why didn't she come to us?'
''It's heart-breaking.''

First of all, shame on the government for using this case as an opportunity to blame their opposition and previous governments. Things like this still go on now!

Second, I agree wholeheartedly bearbear

Court hears Kiesha's mother was abused as Child

<snipped>

The court heard that Abrahams' father was a violent alcoholic who was in jail on alcohol-related offences for much of her early life and had a ''dysfunctional relationship'' with her mother.

Abrahams and her mother spent much of their time trying to avoid the man, but were unable to keep him out of their lives.

At about 10 years of age, Abrahams found her mother dead in their home and was then forced into ''inappropriate care''.

Justice Ian Harrison will sentence Abrahams on July 18.

System failed Kiesha's killer mum: court

EVEN Kristi Anne Abrahams' lawyer says it's easy to hate the woman who killed her daughter, six-year-old Kiesha Weippeart.

But Abrahams is the product of a system that failed her following a violent and abusive childhood, defence barrister Janet Manuell, SC, told the Supreme Court on Thursday.
Abrahams is also a woman who was unable to cope with motherhood with an IQ under 70, the court heard.

Kiesha Weippart's mum, Kristi Anne Abrahams, awaits fate for girl's murder

KIESHA Weippeart's mother was a doomed parent, with a court yesterday told that her turbulent childhood paved the way for an "intergenerational" tragedy.

Kristi Anne Abrahams - who yesterday cried as her lawyer outlined her childhood abuse and said "it's easy to hate her" - will now wait three weeks to learn her sentence for murdering her six-year-old daughter.

Kiesha's mum's confession played in court

THE moment Kristi Anne Abrahams confessed to killing her six-year-old daughter Kiesha has been played in a Sydney court.

Abrahams sobbed and was at times incoherent as she told an undercover officer through her tears that she and her partner Robert Smith "didn't know what to do" after Kiesha was found dead in her Mt Druitt home in July 2010.
"So we put her in the garage, in a suitcase," Abrahams said in a video played in the Supreme Court today.

KRISTI ABRAHAMS ABNORMALLY LOW IQ?

At about 10 years of age, Abrahams found her mother dead in their home and was then forced into ''inappropriate care''.
The court heard she was automatically placed in the indigenous care system because of her father's background, despite the fact she did not identify as being Aboriginal.
''She was confronted with a system which said 'no, you're Aboriginal','' Ms Manuell said. ''It dictated the care structure, it dictated the level of care she got, or didn't get.
''And it stayed that way from the ages of 11 to 16 when she moved into girls' refuges. She was never given the love and support which was so important for her development.''
Ms Manuell said the violence and poor care Abrahams suffered as a child were significant causal factors in the anger and emotional issues she experienced as an adult, and these had contributed to the crime.
''She simply doesn't have the emotional coping skills,'' Ms Manuell said. ''[She] has punished herself and continues to punish herself for what she's done.''
Prosecutor Chris Maxwell, QC, accepted that Abrahams' background should be taken into account as a mitigating factor when deciding what sentence she should receive, asserting that it ''amplifies the tragedy of the case''.
But he only partially accepted the defence's argument that Abrahams' intellectual disability, including her abnormally low IQ, should be taken into account.
He said the level of deception Abrahams employed to cover up the crime suggested a certain level of intelligence and awareness, despite this disability.

No one would wonder about her having a low IQ but abnormally low is probable exaggeration in my opinion. She seemed to be ok when giving interviews and making up stories to keep suspicion from being placed on them. Many people have a bad childhood but don't kill and burn their children.

People with a mild intellectual disability

People have different abilities and develop at different rates. Some people find learning new skills or information difficult. This could be because they have an intellectual disability. A person has an intellectual disability if they have both the following before they are 18 years of age:

An IQ below 70 (average IQ is 100)
Significant difficulty with daily living skills including looking after themselves, communicating and taking part in activities with others.

A mild intellectual disability is defined as an IQ between 50 and 70. Generally speaking, a person with a mild intellectual disability:
participates in and contributes to their families and their communities,
has important relationships in his/her life,
works in either open or supported employment,
may live and travel independently but will need support and help to handle money and to plan and organise their daily life,
may marry and raise children with the support of family, friends and the service system, may learn to read and write.

http://www.cddh.monash.org/assets/documents/intellectual-disability.pdf

Information provided to service professionals on conducting assessments for parents with an intellectual disability is usually limited (McConnell & Llewellyn, 1998). There is evidence of inappropriate use of assessment tools, an over reliance on IQ testing (instead of directly assessing parenting skills/knowledge) and a preoccupation with the parents' intellectual disability as the reason for any difficulty in parenting (Australian Family and Disability Studies Research Collaboration, 2008).

I don't have a bold function as I use an app to post but if I could bold...

1. Did the defacto
partner residing in the house have a a verified intellectual disability?

2. IQ is a variable score. Was she tested before or near 18?

3. Studies show an over reliance on IQ tests.

4. Was she incapable, due to a low IQ, to mentally not comprehend that the biological father and his mother wanted to help? The father reported the bites and after hospital treatment was put into foster care.

5. If KA spent her life avoiding her father, why did she accept his offer to have KW stay with him?

Ok I will get off my soap box BUT before I do..

I know II and these kids and adults will be the first to find a bandaide if someone scrapes their knee. They also ask if you need a hug or if a boy they say great fall dude.

Low IQ does not equate to medical or emotional neglect.

Exactly. She knew what she was doing.

68 is not an 'abnormally low' IQ at all.

Kristi knew when she bit Kiesha that it was wrong. She knew when she hit her and put a hat on her to cover it up, that it was wrong. She knew when she kept Kiesha home from school and HSLO visited her 7 times and she rang the Department of Education to tell them to butt out, that it was wrong.

I have worked with people with mild intellectual disabilities (IM). In my experience it's not until a person has a moderate intellectual disability (IO) that grey area seems to come in with regards to right and wrong.

Fruity, I will bow out now, I have posted and added links.

Flinders, I'm not sure why you're bowing out?

'DOCS didn't protect Kiesha'
The grandmother of six-year-old Kiesha Weippeart has spoken out to condemn the Department of Community Services for returning the child to the care of her mother, who went on to physically abuse and murder her.
Liz Weippeart made the comments before the sentencing in two weeks' time of the child's mother, Kristi Abrahams, who has admitted to the murder.
