Sonia Coleman said the first she knew of Kyle’s disappearance was a text she received from James on the afternoon of February 22 which said “Hey old girl, what’s Kyle up to, can’t get hold of him?” Mrs Coleman said it was not unusual to get a text from James asking about Kyle but this was unusual as she thought Kyle was with James. She told the coroner that Kyle would always contact her if he was staying the night somewhere different.“It is very out of character for him (Kyle) not to ring me,” Mrs Coleman said.
When she and her husband went over to talk to James, he repeated the story about Kyle walking home and his girlfriend Toni-Lee Sabin asked him (James) why he didn’t wake her up to get her to drive him home.

James’s father Michael Coleman was next up and he said he kept the guns James used at his house.
He was unsure what guns James took on the week of the Undilla Station trip because he was on night shift that week and asleep during most of the day.He admitted shells found at the scene in Undilla were from his collection but could explain why Kyle Coleman’s bloodstains were found on the butt of his shotgun.
“Boys will be boys, they were probably both shooting with it, he may have cut himself” he said.

Mount Isa teenager Kyle Coleman was most likely killed by his friend during a hunting trip, an inquest has heard.

Kyle, 17, left Mount Isa in February 2014 on a camping trip to Undilla Station, north-west of Mount Isa, with his friend James Coleman, 21 (no relation).

James returned home to Mount Isa earlier than expected, but Kyle was never seen again.

Days after he came home from the camping trip, James took his own life.

Delivering her closing submissions to the inquest in Mount Isa today, counsel assisting the coroner Stephanie Williams said there was no definitive evidence James intended to harm Kyle.

But she concluded: "Mr Coleman's death is likely to have occurred by a shooting accident with James."

She said Kyle likely died of a gunshot wound and never returned from Undilla Station.

James's father Michael Coleman yesterday told the inquest his son was very stressed and "really down on himself" after he returned from the camping trip.

Today, the lawyer representing Kyle's family, Dennis Lynch, told the inquest: "Evidence clearly shows he [James] told lies" and "he attempted to lay a false trail".

Investigating officer Senior Constable Megan Johnston told the court she agreed with Mr Lynch's suggestion that James's statements to police were "riddled with lies".

Mr Lynch said James's actions following Kyle's disappearance, including his suicide, were evidence of his guilt and showed Kyle's death was not an accident.

Coroner Jan Bentley said she would hand down her findings from Cairns via video link as soon as possible.

[h=1]Coroner rules Kyle Coleman died at Undilla Station[/h]
“I find that he was killed by James Coleman and his death was as a result of the discharge of a firearm by James Coleman,” she said.

“I find that James shot Kyle with a Mossberg bolt action shotgun. I find that both Kyle and James were intoxicated at the time of the shooting.”

She said some of Kyle’s possessions including parts of a watch, a timesheet book and a swag were found burned on the Undilla Station property.
She said there was evidence of Kyle's blood on a shotgun James took on the trip.
She said there was no evidence to suggest that the death was anything other than accidental however James Coleman lied about a number of matters to police, friends and family when he returned to Mount Isa on February 22.

“I find that Kyle died at or near the fire site and his body was left on Undilla Station and his remains have since been moved and/or disposed of by animals,” the coroner said.

The coroner ruled that James Coleman had lied about Kyle Coleman returning with him to Mount Isa, had lied about where they had been on the Undilla property and omitted to tell police he had washed his car on return to Mount Isa.
She said James Coleman committed suicide a few days later rather than admit the truth of his action
