Watching this happen when I was in Sydney yesterday was scary but at no point did I ever feel unsafe. I wasn't in the CBD/danger area but as I was crossing the harbour I could see waves of people leaving and Polair choppers ... but I knew NSW police would do everything to keep us all safe.

I have been in tears all day. My prayers are with the families of Tori and Katrina, and also with the surviving hostages and their loved ones.

Couple charged after Sydney woman Noleen Hayson Pal fatally stabbed and set alight at Werrington in April

Updated 15 Nov 2013, 5:45pm

A self-styled Muslim cleric and his partner have faced court charged over the brutal murder of a woman in Sydney's west earlier this year.

The body of Noleen Hayson Pal was found in the stairwell of a unit block in the city's west at Werrington in April after emergency services were called to a fire. The 30-year-old had been stabbed a number of times and set alight. Police arrested Man Haron Monis, 49, and Amirah Droudis, 34, after stopping their car at Campsie early this morning. Monis is sometimes also known as Sheikh Haron. Droudis was then charged with murder, while Monis was charged with being an accessory before and after the fact to murder. Police say the couple knew Ms Pal before her death.

I don't know if this has been posted before. But this is what I am very interested in now. Ms Pal was the ex-wife of Monis. They had a fierce battle of the custody of their two daughters. I am wondering what the motive could have been for murdering her. Maybe Monis lost the custody battle. Both Monis and Droudis have been on bail since. New laws on bail do not come into effect until January 31. Droudis' house was searched by detectives today. It appears that freedom for Monis was running out and he would likely be in prison next year so he had nothing to lose if he was killed.

I would like to know more about Droudis.

Honestly I don't want these people in Australia. America, England or Canada, do you want them?

I bet I know the answer!

I've been crucified for my views but we were being told "it's not if, it's when". We were warned so we knew and patiently waited like fools.

This is outrageous.

The self-styled Sheik Haron and his spokeswoman Droudis drew headlines in 2009 for a video posted on his website saying that rape victims invited their attacks and should be condemned.

“It is not fair if we condemn the rapist without condemning the one who has encouraged the rape,” she said in the video.

I cannot believe these two freaks were walking around free. They both should have been locked up already.

Last night someone posted on the thread that the family of his ex-wife were angry that he was out on bail. It slipped by me, with the emotion of the night. Of course I agreed, but I didn’t put much thought into it due to the tension of the night.

Sydney siege ends: Family of ex-wife Noleen Hayson Pal furious gunman on bail

Today, I have thought of it a lot. Will this be the wake-up call for that magistrate, those judges, those law-makers, to see what they are allowing to happen with their endless light sentences and easy bails?

Surely a day must come when they look at themselves in the mirror and say ‘how are we contributing to the ongoing violence in our society? … what could we do better, what precedents could we set, that help curb the damage done to countless innocents?… how could we support our police efforts better?”

May some tighter laws be the good that comes out of this bad act.

Hearing now that Katrina was trying to protect a pregnant colleague when she was shot. So brave.

Here is a picture of the flower memorial at the end of the business day today.

“The gun laws we were meant to have after the Port Arthur massacre are now watered down quite significantly,” said Samantha Lee, chairwoman of Gun Control Australia (CGA).

“In the wake of the siege, GCA is calling on review of gun laws and in particular an audit of state and territory compliance with the 1996 Agreement on Firearms, storage requirements and gun dealer compliance with firearm laws,” Lee said.

bbm No more laws, just implement the ones you got, and see who hired that magistrate.

Stricter bail laws will take effect in about a month.

NSW Attorney-General Brad Hazzard said on Tuesday that stricter bail laws would take effect at the end of January, and it was "very unlikely" that Monis would have been released on bail had those rules been in place.

"This government changed the Bail Act to ensure greater safety for our community. It was changed to ensure that offenders involved in serious crime will not get bail," he said.

Magistrate Joan Baptie is the one that gave him bail in the first place - despite identifying unacceptable risks.

Ms Baptie said she had identified two "unacceptable risks" – that Monis may endanger the safety of victims, individuals or the community, and that he may interfere with witnesses or evidence.
