Diana Abdel-Rahman, president of Australian Muslim Voice, told the ABC there was an air of "expectation" among Australian Muslims and said she was worried about reprisal attacks.
Ms Abdel-Rahman said she stayed up all night watching live coverage of the siege, praying that nobody would die.
She described the subsequent shooting as "a tragic moment" in Australia's history, that must not be viewed through the prism of religion.
"I reminded myself of Martin Bryant, when he committed that crime all those years ago and killed so many people. [He was] another person who was deranged, who had a history of issues, who just went on a rampage and killed innocent people," she said.
"It's not the first time in Australia. Society is full of complex people. People do things for all sorts of reasons and some people will enact their anger in society and will take it out on innocent people. This guy just happens to be a person who calls himself a Muslim. His actions are obviously not that of a Muslim."

I hope so too.
My thoughts are also with our many Muslim citizens, for all the anguish and fear Haron has caused them, too. May everyone stay safe.
