Makes me wonder if he was in an Uber and questioning direction he was being taken, but then again, he seems to want to be at CC

We need more info on how Google marks journeys, and modes of travelling. The family said Theo was indicated to be walking (coloured blue) to the end of Tennyson Street, and then running (coloured red) to the beach. How do they categorise movements? Is it speed?

In the video of Theo leaving Cheeky Monkey's another thing seems odd, he makes no attempt to get his friend's attention who is still suppose to be inside. Now picture going somewhere with a friend you just spent a good part of the day and evening with, go to a club together and then for whatever reason you get booted out. His friend being unaware that Theo was booted , so would think Theo would have somehow tried to let him know? Instead Theo walks past the glass with all the people inside but makes no attempt to see if he can see Antoine, wave out to him, hand gesture whatever, to let him know he is outside. He did not message him either. I know everyone thinks different, though seems like a natural thing to do, let your mate know somehow you had to leave. Theo did not even look once to see if he could spot him in there. He must have really had his mind on something and was so very focused on his phone.

Had a look and found this answer on Quora , so guess can count out cycling as wrong color.upload_2019-11-11_17-11-45.png

Found this interesting, probably because the car ride request could perhaps be slightly at odds with the “cautious Theo“ profile.

“On February 6, Mr Hayez was searching for a ride from Melbourne to Brisbane on Facebook and said he did not have a car but could ‘share the cost or organise something’.”

“Theo's godfather and Victorian resident Jean-Phillipe Pector said his godson's disappearance was uncharacteristic because he was a sensible person who didn't take unnecessary risks. He was not used to drinking at all, he does not take drugs, he's really sensible and he wouldn't look for adventure especially if he wasn't fully in his normal capacity," Mr Pector said.

If the backpackers he was with earlier that night were involved, Police would have cctv and key card records of them re-entering the hostel after Theo disappeared. There would be dorm room witnesses to their condition upon entry. Police would have exhausted that line of inquiry. I think they can safely be excluded.

Also, some of us enjoy an Irish exit. There's no need to alert an entire party when you want to head home...

That’s great feral flower and interesting. Wonder how the phone computes that? Vibrations, speed between points??? What’s the engine or lack of got to do with anything too?

So he was probably on foot and running or walking fast....

Which makes me think he was intending to go home. Sneak out, don't make a fuss, don't make everyone else leave because then you're be obliged to continue on with them.

Personally, I think Theo veered off course as soon as he turned onto Kingsley. That is where the unusual behaviour begins.

Even when travelling alone, backpackers tend to hang out close to their accommodation, around the main streets and main beach, and wherever other backpackers are.

According to the internet, backpackers wanting to buy weed tend to go to the Arts Factory which is another backpacker accommodation and major hang out.

But Theo went in the opposite direction, alone, towards no hostels or backpacker friendly venues. With no money on him, running straight into the bush. This is incredibly strange.

Something we know for sure is that parks at night are always bad news.

Perhaps Theo took a bad turn, ended up on the Tennyson rec grounds, was beaten or sexually assaulted then ran for safety into the bush, not caring that he lost his hat, until he caught his breath at the beach and tried to normalise his environment by writing home. Perhaps they found him or he chose to end his own pain.

Oof. This sounds awful. I did not enjoy typing it.

Love the “Irish exit”! :D

On that note of leaving without a fuss, it’s been publicly stated that Theo was having a good time in the bar and was also dancing. Just throwing this out there: maybe there was a girl involved that he met at the bar then quietly arranged to meet again at the oval. Maybe she lived locally and knew the area well. And maybe she had a boyfriend.

Interesting choice of path to the beach too. He wasn’t far off the car park yet veered off just before it into denser scrub. Avoiding more obvious paths including the car park?

My thoughts were that his first intention may have been to head to Clarke's Beach but then he changed his mind, for whatever reason, and headed towards Tallow.

One of the suggested Google Map routes from CM to Tallow Beach takes Milne Track. There are two suggested routes both 25 min. The other goes further south along Pacific Vista Track.

Because the obvious or expected route is to step out of the bar and walk straight up the Main Street into town then northwards to the hostel. Simple and straightforward.

Instead he came out of the bar and walked down the side street away from the main strip.

Maybe he was wobbly.
Maybe he was just meandering around the block to waste time and pull himself together.
Maybe he came in that way (from Kingsley) and just went out the same way. Did they get a lift to the bar or walk? Were they dropped off on Kingsley Street perhaps?
Anyway he was constantly looking for how to get back to Wake Up from the moment he left Cheeky’s.
But why go up Tennyson and not Middleton (the first street off Kingsley on the left)?

The other thing is that route to the Milne Track is very precise. You have to accurately wind through a few residential streets and between homes to navigate finding the entrance to (by the looks of it) a pretty dark, deserted, overgrown and eery path. This is what makes me strongly suspect he was with someone who knew exactly the way to go.

They went to CM with the Wake UP! shuttle bus.

Ok am still focused on Tennyson St. So far the only interest I was aware of there is the camp where homeless and also backpackers camp. Well there is another attraction at Tennyson St., free parking. It is the closest free parking area to the town center. Not far from Cheeky's, Theo was googling Wake Up yet walking down Tennyson. Maybe he had no intention of walking, maybe there was someone at the club or someone at the camp who had a car parked there, so Theo walked there to try get a ride. It is not a good area no, and very possibly something happened there. He was on his own and vulnerable. Reading the crime articles in Byron plenty people get mugged, for wallets, key cards and phones. Ok key card wasn't used but perhaps intention was there if things didn't go wrong. If anything bad happened to Theo during being mugged one would be very brazen to go use his key card, charges for getting caught with it much more serious then say if Theo escaped, walked away unharmed. Or IF he was getting a lift, maybe the person he was getting in with was not who he thought. I still believe something happened there at Tennyson. Then his phone was taken on a wild goose chase to cover up. I came across a post on Byron Bay Community board talking about free parking at Tennyson St. opposite the tennis courts. Can park all night there and four hours free parking from 9 am. So this could very well be the reason he walked there, either knowing someone who parked there or hoping for a random lift, or having met someone who was staying at the camp and had a car parked there earlier in the day or the day before. Would be good to know if Theo had been to this area earlier.

Theo has a Lot of pretty girls on his Facebook friends list, and I can imagine him being the type to attract attention of girls, and upsetting a boyfriend of a girl he might have been dancing and chatting up. Aussie blokes can’t dance, so maybe a reason for a scuffle and kicked out of CM

I think, maybe as someone pointed out earlier, excuse my ignorance in looking at who, but I think Theo may have been embarrased about being kicked out; hence not alerting anyone.

Also, @Watergate had posted a screenshot of how the google interprets the red....not necessarily running....

I'm still in bumfk nowhere knowing what may have happened....this is going to be process of elimination...
IMO

Yep, I agree, something happened there at Tennyson....

Jonson St is one way. Maybe we're assuming Theo should know to go right leaving Cheekys. Consider, most phones are on drive mode on maps. I think Theo might have decided the best route was to go as a taxi might because it would have lit streets and not take you through urban pedestrian areas where you might be mugged. For whatever reason he decides to ignore Middleton St (at night I imagine it could look dark and narrow?) and go up Tennyson St instead. The variables of why he may do that is infinite. It would be a good recreation to reconstruct this journey using a similar phone on the same network and try to recreate Theo's data. See what it is he was seeing. Then perhaps we would have a better perspective of his decisions.

I'm thinking Theo may not have known which way to go after leaving CM.

I've been to venues I have not been familiar and walked out not recalling which direction I came from to get in. So it makes sense that Theo may have headed the wrong direction unknowingly....

He would not have tried to draw attention to himself if getting kicked out either...these two equations need to be taken into consideration.

The manager said it’s common to ask patrons to leave and happens weekly. It’s irresponsible though as you say and needs to part of their risk mitigation to some extent. Theo nevertheless went on his way and maybe would have done the same if he left voluntarily. I’d like to know more too.

How is it 'irresponsible' of the venue to ask him to leave? They've obviously viewed him being unsteady on his feet (or he's shown other signs of intoxication) and the only way they could ensure he didn't consume any more alcohol on their premises (and risk themselves getting a fine) was to kick him out.

He's an adult. From the video he looked to be a bit wobbly, but was alert and not in need of medical help at the time. Are bars and clubs meant to offer personal lifts home now, I don't understand?
