Supt Fehon would not elaborate on reports of an outsider stopping to ask for directions to the street where Williams grandparents live, shortly before he went missing.
Officers from the Sex Crimes Squad of the NSW Police State Crime Command joined the investigation yesterday.

See that seems weird - we are now examining whether he's been abducted. They should have been examining that when he disappeared, not just searching then scratching their heads. They really sound like they've bungled this from the beginning.
Children
Sex Crimes Squad
Whilst all police have a role in protection of children, clear areas of responsibility have been established for the investigation of child abuse matters. The Sex Crimes Squad and the Joint Investigation Response Squad (JIRS) were established to ensure provision of a specialist adult sexual assault and child protection service to support Local Area Commands across NSW. These services are offered in partnership with Community Services (formerly Department of Community Services), and the Department of Health
The Sex Crimes Squad Commander is the Head of Profession for Sex Crimes. The Commander has a key role in focusing Local Area Commands and Regions response to this crime type through State-wide monitoring.
The aim of the Squad is to:
Investigate sex crimes that are protracted, complex, serial and serious in nature.
Identify crime trends, and develop Operational Strategies, Programs and Policies.
Maintain the Child Protection Register in accordance with Legislative and Policy requirements.
Provide consultancy in local investigations if necessary.

Abduction was being investigated very early on even though the missing in bush scenario seemed like the only focus.See that seems weird - we are now examining whether he's been abducted. The kidnapping statistics are quite frightening - http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/abs@.nsf/Lookup/4510.0main+features102013
There is a report from a decade ago that has stranger abductions at 62% of the total - http://aic.gov.au/publications/current series/cfi/101-120/cfi103.html which I admit I find quite surprising, I would assume most abductions would be custody related.
Here's another missing child gone missing since last Friday. Praying for baby William's safety. The mother has three names? Hoping not another Kiesha.
THERE are concerns for the welfare of a baby boy in Sydney's west as police appeal for the public's help to find him.
BABY William is aged between eight and 10 months old and police say he was last seen with his mother in the Blacktown area last Friday.
Police would like to speak to the baby's 32-year-old mother, Jennifer Gee, also known as Jennifer Murphy or Jennifer Lyons.
They have concerns for the child's safety and wellbeing.

I see they have been searching the river on jet skis . does anyone know how far from grandmothers house river was, and is it deep, fast flowing? had there been much rain recently.
Once you've eliminated the forest, if the river was in close proximity , it is the next logical place
where William could have been.
