That was such a lucky break that the taxi driver was driving a small car. FIVE bombs would have been much worse than 3. And the cabbie might not have remembered them if the cases all fit in with no problem.

It makes me wonder if the terrorists were as organized as some might think, considering that they did not anticipate that cabs might not have room for all their bags.imo.

Yes it's strange they never asked for a mini van style taxi but thankfully they didn't.

I'm curious about how the airport explosives operate. I saw on Fox News that they wore the glove on one hand holding the bar of the baggage trolley to prevent early detonation. The bombs are designed so they go off when the hand is removed from the bar that way if they are arrested before they intend to detonate the bomb still goes off. I wonder how this works if they picked out random luggage trolleys? It is hard to believe the bombs didn't go off in the taxi. They seem to be well designed not amateurish versions we have seen in other attempted attacks.

It is a great pity nobody from security saw the man in the white coat appeared to be in disguise but with the way the bombs were designed it probably would have changed anything. They clearly need to have more security patrolling the entrances of airports.

It is very very worrying what is happening it keeps you awake at night in addition to personal worries. I really don't want this to become the new normal. My dad is nearly 70 and I asked him if now is the most concerning time he has lived through and he said the 1970s and 1980s particularly with the IRA bombings was much worse than now.

The two airport bombers have been identified as brothers who were well known to the police, but for organised crime activity rather than terrorism. One had been convicted in 2010 of firing a Kalashnikov at police.

I find that detail so strange too. Why not hail another cab if all your stuff doesn't fit in one?! And the strangeness of leaving two big bags at home at the last minute when heading to the airport stands out....and was memorable to the cabbie who could later identify the address.

My math must be rusty because it seems like the two brothers are supposed to be serving time already:

"Brahim El Bakraoui, 30, was convicted in October 2010 for firing a Kalashnikov assault rifle at police and wounding an officer after a robbery in Brussels earlier that year. He was sentenced to nine years in prison.

In 2011, his brother Khalid was given a sentence of five years for car jacking."

Obviously let off for either a breach of human rights ( how I dunno)
Or time served prior to sentencing.
Wouldn't mind digging into the reasoning behind the facade.

It seems like an obvious question the reporter should have addressed, though I understand getting the info out quickly in a breaking story is a priority, with more-indepth reporting coming later. If you find out more about these two, let us know!

Just remembered from the San Bernadino attack last year. The third suspect. The brothers and mother. All who were questioned as it was a tight connection within all the family. They had these Muslim lawyers. Now I'm no lawyer. Anyone could see that it was a family job. From the rushed wedding to her coming to USA. Gaining a visa. A poor 6 month old baby. A mother who lived with them as it was her house. You can't tell me she didn't know what or why all these boxes delivered to the home. And these lawyers were like.... stating the 'innocence of family members' the other family friends were just that. So no doubt they all have the same group of lawyers.
Just hell bent on pleading how much a good citizen they normally are. That they were under duress that day. Suffering with depression...... yeah yeah yeah milk it baby.
You pay enough. Your lawyer will jump thru hoops

I don't know about Belgium but in the UK it's normal for prisoners to serve half to two-thirds of their sentence before being parolled providing they have behaved themselves in prison and are not thought to pose a continuing risk to the public. Once parolled, they can be recalled to prison to serve the rest of their sentence at any time for all sorts of reasons.

Firing Kalashnikovs at the police amounts to a continuing risk in my book, especially for a serial offender.

I just read the same here.

Belgian media say Brussels prime suspect not arrested

BRUSSELS: Belgian media which earlier reported the arrest on Wednesday (Mar 23) of a prime suspect in Tuesday's bomb attacks in Brussels said the person detained was not, in fact, Najim Laachraoui.

La Libre Belgique newspaper said another person had been arrested. DH, which first reported the story, also said the man detained in the Anderlecht district had been misidentified.

Police and prosecutors have been declining all comment but will hold a news conference at noon GMT.
