Belize - Francesca Matus, 52, & Drew De Voursney, 36, murdered, Corozal, 25 Apr 2017

IMO the pieces are starting to fit together. JD, a Canadian in a foreign country, running out of cash, turns to thievery (casino), and is threatened with eviction. Have you seen his girlfriend? Certainly makes you wonder why she was with him? Only time I see hot young women with old guys, its for their money. So this guy seemed to be jobless, penniless, on the brink of being homeless, and to cap it off, in jeopardy of losing his trophy GF.
I just seen her, has 2 FBs. You're right, she's young for him, and IMO, her 2 kids are not his. The only thing is he doesn't seem to have much money, only attraction could be his Canadian citizenship. (just speculation on my part).

After reading the latest news, I too am starting to think the pieces of the puzzle fitting together, are painting a clear picture. At this point in time we can only speculate and come up with lots of different case scenarios, and theories.

IF (big IF) JD is in fact guilty, I am trying to imagine how he could have easily disabled DD. This is just all speculation. FM & DD left Scotty's, and their friends said they were going "home", apparently everybody assumed they were going to FM's home in Corozal. Now I'm thinking it's possible that they DID made it home, and were approached by JM, saying he had the money to settle the debt. Most likely cash since it would have been too late for a cheque. It was late and dark and he could have invited them over to his place, FM went upstairs to her place to get the paperwork (maybe I-owe-yous) and receipts, while DD stayed chatting with JD.

Again, please this is ALL just pure speculation, I'm just trying to make the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
While counting the money and doing the paperwork, they could have been offered some drinks, either alcoholic or refreshments, homemade limonade, pop, something spiked that put them to sleep or OD. To make sure they were not going to wake up, they were strangled. I don't know how to make the duct tape fit in this case scenario. :(

I read the articles, I guess you're referring to Elio Lopez. Certainly seems he's a hardened criminal who recruits younger guys to help him with his plots.

But this kidnapping raises so many red flags when I look at the details: Two cane farmers aged 23 and 31, and a 26 year old 'land consultant', driving a $15,000 Nissan Infiniti, arrive to inspect/buy a Nissan X-terra with $13,000 cash. One was wearing a ring and gold chain worth $3,000 and had a $600 Gucci wallet. One guy carried a razor blade in his wallet and was comfortable using a gun, he said if it had fired correctly he'd have killed one of his assailants.

So how exactly do young cane farmers get so much cash to spend on luxury cars and accessories? Probably everyone knew how much spare money they had, they'd stand out as easy pickings in a scheme to rob them.

In comparison, I just don't think a pair of local expats driving a 20 year old jeep home from a bar would appear to be worth the trouble of robbing.

Yes, I get what you're saying and you make good sense.

My first post this week included the comment from social media - I know now that isn't allowed - about the 2 guys in custody for the murder who had supposedly just been released from Belize prison.
The comment stated (and this is in no way substantiated) that they had followed Francesca and Drew from the bar thinking she had valuables in the car. Allegedly, they had overheard her talking about selling her home and knew she was leaving the next day.

So, when I saw the story of the kidnapping, I wondered if those guys were the same guys being talked about in the SM comment. In finding EL's past history, especially the part about the rape and murder 12 years ago, my mind ran a little wild.

The cop and his girlfriend were grabbed outside of Tony's. It was a random robbery, turned into rape and murder. I don't know why he let the girl go, but maybe he doesn't let anybody go anymore.

Anyway, I've read through all the posts here and there's been so much posted about bodies dumped in the area. It's easier for me to believe that it's a gang of ruthless criminals. When I look at JD's picture and read the possible motive, I am just not seeing it. I'm naive that way.

I think the right thing for me to do then would be to stop reading everything, rest my brain and let the police decide what happened.

Francesca Matus rented the ground floor of her home north of Corozal to John Deshaies, who police have identified as a person of interest in Matus’ and Drew DeVoursney’s murders. JEREMY REDMON/jredmon@ajc.com

Do you think it's to soon to wonder if their home is now up for sale??

I would like to buy property in Belize..

Kophy, by all means keep posting your ideas, thoughts, speculations, theories, etc. That's what we do here in Websleuths. Many times something someone says, sparks an idea that helps find out what happened. It could have been something personal but it could be more complicated that involve a lot more people, and reading the news and learning what else was/is going on around the town helps get a better understanding.

By the way, I did find that SM comment you referred to, it was a comment under a comment, on a news article about SM & DD. The article link had been posted on a FB timeline, not a news FB page, so it couldn't be linked.
I did bookmark it, but when I went to check it out yesterday to see if there were further comments, the whole post was either gone or the status was change to "not public".

Deshaies’ Attorney Speaks

The Attorney doesn't know the name of the casino?

http://www.7newsbelize.com/sstory.php?nid=40248
I read that as a deft way of saying "I'm not going to tell you."

Whatever went on with the casino, I don't imagine the disputing parties want their names or business associated in the media with a murder. I get the impression Perrara, who seems very prominent and a former politician, will aim to manage the case to keep details out of the media.

I had to run to Safeway and had a thought while tripping over a tree root.
The cane farmer who found the bodies was gashed by a leaf while speaking to reporters at the site. I would think the killer(s) would have some marks on them? There have been a few pictures posted of JD post custody. I didn't notice anything - has anyone else?

It just occurred to me, while most of Belize probably doesn't have street video suveillance, there must be some out in Consejo Shores that could possibly capture whether they drove that far. Also, it probably would have it's own cell tower, so the FBI could find out if they got in range of it.

Wow! This is so convoluted, my head is spinning, don't know what to think anymore. One minute I think I have it all figured out, the next minute I am back to square one, so confused.

A longtime real-estate developer in Corozal told Postmedia that Deshaies, a local contractor, is being set up as a patsy.

"He didn't do it," said the source, who didn't want to be identified for fear of violent reprisals. "I sold him that blue truck. He's a great guy."

But the developer, and local media reports, said real-estate development in Belize is a virtual shooting gallery. People buy properties that don't exist and land swindles are common.

And then there is the violence.

"That's why people in Corozal aren't saying anything. They're terrified," the source said. "They know who is behind all this and they're very afraid of him."

"Him" is an elderly American land baron and the insider believes Matus may have been collateral damage and that the target was either Deshaies or DeVoursney.

OMG I laughed at that. Expat communities are in some places a nest of vipers, with gossip and grudges and drunken incidents, since people have little else to do.

I'm sure there are land scams, and it could well be the Don Richardson who spoke to the media has a grudge against JD, and maybe he lied about the argument. In which case his story won't stand up because there'll be people closer to Francesca who'll know what was going on.

But then to imply this old guy had them 'put away' with a plan to implicate JD, and everyone's too afraid to say anything, that's ridiculous, someone's just trying to make trouble for his old enemy. How embarrassing.

WTH????!!!

Omg this case is going to get alot more high profile before it's all done, because this is crazy!

High profile is a good thing because it may help ensure the right person (s) are incarcerated for these heinous murders, of two very innocent people.

Now what was the complaint that was filed by Drew with the Embassy?

Is THAT why the Embassy offered the FBI to assist?

What in the hello is going on in Belize?

The lack of infrastructure there makes me feel very insecure about pretty much everything in this case.

Does anyone know how many cell towers are there?

There is a life-streaming webcam, that is now available 24/7. When I checked a few days ago, it was only available for daylight hours.

There are some properties with video surveillance cameras, as seen on this old news video: :giggle:

Wow...I had lots of catching up to do.

So let me get this straight...

JD and his girlfriend JL and her two children lived on the main floor of FM's house. The "neighbour" across the road who is building a home, claims he used JD as a contractor and fired him. He says that JD is violent and tried to run him over with his truck. He says he overheard JD and FM having an argument about months worth of unpaid rent the day before the murder...two days before JM was set to leave to return to Canada for the summer. But he has nothing to say about FM and whether he ever spoke with her or was friendly with her?

It appears that both JD and JL were friends on FM's facebook account and that they were still living at the home at the time of the murder, which means that they were not thrown out for non payment of rent before FM was to leave for Canada. At least it appears that their belongings, including the casino items, were still there so I assume they were also? I don't think FM absolutely had to leave the day she was planning to and likely wouldn't have if she had some unsettled "tenant" issues to deal with. So at this point JD is in jail awaiting trial on an apparent theft from March (strange that this "theft" didn't seem too urgent until the murders). So where is his girlfriend and her two children? Are they still living in FM's home? Were they living there the night of the murders?

Someone else claims that JD is being set up, that he's a great guy and there is an elderly "land baron" who seems to want to buy up all the prime land for himself? And everyone in the community knows this but are afraid to say anything. And then there is a rumour that FM was considering selling her home, along with a rumour that there was a land deal that went sour. Was someone trying to buy her home and putting pressure on her to sell? And she considered it and then decided no thank you? Was her property sold to someone in a fraudulent transaction that fell through...without her knowledge? Did this anger someone who wanted that property since it was on the beach (and not across the road like the other guy who was developing his property?) And what is one thing that is certain now that FM is deceased? Her property will be sold to someone.

So the two rumours that made it to the comment sections of news articles before they made it to MSM were that JD owed FM rent money and that FM was selling her property. Why was it so important to get these two things out there? So much so that it has now been told to reporters in the country?

To me it sounds pretty dangerous to own prime real estate in that country. There is absolutely no protection from the government or judicial system from fraud, or even murder, for any foreign investors.

I still think that JD had nothing to do with this and that DD was collateral damage. Not sure we're ever going to get the real truth though.
