I don't know how controlled it was 24/7. It seems kind of chaotic and hoarder like. Some things like food and public appearances were IMO definitely controlled. Since there as evidence of being chained and constrained, they were physically being controlled at times. And then the marching and such. But what if they weren't chained all the time? The parents had to sleep, work even if from home, leave the house for food, etc. They *might* have had moments where they tried to give them some education and real world experience in a very bumbling way. (Some of them. IMO, there are probably some children that have not.) Or, they were finding ways to do this without the parents knowledge. What the parents have done to them is horrible, depraved, and criminal. It should not be minimized. But, it's possible they weren't monsters ALL the time. What if they had moments where they tried to do something right? I have a feeling the psychology of this is going to be incredibly deep and complicated. No doubt, the parents should be in jail and have done despicable, horrifically traumatic things to these kids. I just don't think we should assume it was 24 hours a day , every day. There could have been "normal" moments mixed into to all this. Abuse often happens in waves.
OR, this child just had unbelievable fortitude and was going to learn about the world at all costs. She was incredibly brave. She simply could have made it her mission to know something besides what she was being given.
