New information. We believe he was last seen on foot heading North on Alvarado St in Echo Park. He was wearing:

Plain, Black Hoodie with plaid shorts, colorful tennis shoes, and a black jacket over the black hoodie at 12:01pm 08/6/2014At this point, we are assuming that he is still alive and in the wilderness wearing these same clothes.

I'm having some difficulty finding updates on the HelpFindDerek.com website and there isn't an obvious time/date stamp to the above update ... there was a pic of a man from a surveillance camera that they must feel is Derek - thus this new(er) info.

I guess that sighting should say 12:01am on 8/6 ... that's the time stamp on the photo.

Just checking in to see if there's any news. I checked the media, not seeing anything new.

Nothing new from the helpfindderek website since yesterday either. Hoping he is found safe soon!

In fact if his father is bipolar he has a genetic bent towards it as well. Not saying that's what is going on but I am the child of a bipolar person and have done a ton of research on this. I myself don't have the disorder but one of my siblings does have a bipolar spectrum disorder. It runs high in families.

I am only going to theorize in my opinion only that the stress of med school was more than Derek could handle and he is out on a possible bipolar high. Derek is at the age where the disorder tends to manifest itself.

It would be helpful for Derek's family to post a photo of him with facial hair if they have it. If he's off the grid, he probably won't be doing much maintenance.

Edited to add: If Derek's family has a way of knowing if he was on any medication or had started a new medication that would be good. Starting new meds can have psychotic consequences and if a person with a psychotic disorder (IF he were to have one, I'm only throwing ideas out there for why he may be missing) were to be misdiagnosed and given something like Zoloft, it would actually exacerbate a psychotic episode.

That makes sense! I can totally understand the family not wanting to publicize every detail as to why they are worried ... in a best case scenario, Derek is found safe or returns on his own and can resume his life without being completely mortified at what was said about him. Yet, there must be enough compelling reason for family & friends to go to such lengths to find him.

I think the fact that this is just not at all like him to be absent from classes/not in contact with anyone is particularly concerning for them...just hope some organized searches are going on for him.

Another day gone by, and no new updates. I keep checking helpfindderek.com, hoping for good news.

An update from http://helpfindderek.com/facts-of-the-case/

- Derek’s car, phone, wallet, and cards has been accounted for. He left on foot with $200 cash and a personal state ID
- Derek has a family history of sudden disappearances
- Derek loved trails and nature, and we have reason to believe he left to seek permanent residence in these areas
- Due to the official missing person status of the case, all official outlets have been searched (Jails, Hospitals, etc)
- Last known sighting was heading North on Alvarado street in Echo Park (1342 N. Alvarado) at 12:01AM 8/6/2014
- He has distinct identifying scars including a flesh colored 5cm scar on his R arm. He was last seen wearing black sweater, maroon shirt, plaid shorts, and colorful shoes.

There are photos of the scar and clothing on the site as well. Hoping they find him safe soon and can get him some help.

Can someone give me a geography lesson? In relationship to the parks/nature areas where Derek may have gone, any clear streams available? Wow, just feeling more concerned...$200 is not that much...thinking of his survival, beginning with water.

The locations they are searching are pretty spread out. I'm sure there are plenty of fresh water sources available. He is a very experienced outdoorsman, per the family.
