It's hard to believe these DNA profiles were there but none was found of the female victim who had worn this very same bra?

So none of the victims DNA was found? None?

Yet their dead skin cells, muscles, tissue, skin slippage, all full of their own DNA, were inside of the graves all during the decomposition stages, with these same items?

Did they test the backpack?

Imo
If one of those samples come up as any known family member or friend this will throw a massive red herring into Merritts defense giving his supporters something to cling to. I really think thats what they are hoping for.

Of course that would be impossible since there is know way as Tortise has said that no 2010 DNA would withstand all that time in the desert.

BBM, yes it is quite hard to believe in regard to the DNA that was or wasn't detectable from the recovery site of the McStay family.
I don't know if the backpack was tested for DNA?

It's not really hard to believe because its all about the recovery techniques & stats

The prosecution lab didn't find anything useable.

But if you are willing to aggregate lots of material and then amplify the hell out of it, you may well get degraded profiles that can't be matched to anyone.

This sort of thing has come up in other cases, usually on the state side, where they want to "amplify" a tiny sample in order to show it is the accused.

The real question is whether it means anything mathematically.

Good morning everyone!

#McStay - Defense first witness today is Kathy Sanchez, Summer McStay's cousin. She went with Summer's mother & Susan Blake to clean the house. Her best guess is it was spring/summer of 2010. There was a palm print on the outside of the kitchen window, she cleaned it off.

#McStay - Sanchez testified to seeing a futon cover, it was 'falling apart', looked like it had been ruined in the wash. However, on cross Rodriguez refreshed her memory that she told detectives there were four futon covers - different pads on futon.

BBM - Right, this is what I have found in reading about Cybergenetics, and they do actually typically work for LE or the prosecution from what I have found. I am curious now and would like to hear how often they work for and/or testify for each side, for no other reason than I'm interested LOL

We don't know the results of these tests yet, hopefully that is what is being done today and we will get audio later.

I am in no way saying that I believe or don't believe when that DNA was left there, but it's pretty clear to me that no one really knows if DNA can survive that long in those conditions because there is absolutely no studies that have been done. She testified on Thursday about this... and the thought that assumptions were made with DNA over the years until studies were done saying otherwise, and because the technology has increasingly advanced as well. I think she stopped short of saying that because the DNA was degraded that it's possibly older than it being left there in 2014 rather than 2010. I am kind of hoping that the Bode/Cyber people might give us an opinion about that.

This should have been brought up over and over on cross. I know most here think the prosecution is doing a good job, but I really don’t think they are. The cross examination of this witness is a prime example. He got facts wrong, misunderstood her testimony, and dwelled on inconsequential points. IMO.
I am going to go out on a limb right now and predict they do not get a guilty verdict. It will be quite unfortunate because I think if they would have laid the case out in a more organized manner, prepared their witnesses better, and focused on the strengths of the case, I think they could have done well. Of course the intermittency of trial days is working against them too.
He is not done with his cross though- is he?

I think he is going to come back now with some tough questions after he had this time to confer with his experts.

I agree they did a long & thorough investigation to find the perpetrator of the murders of the McStay family.
If CM had any help at all he is not saying, and it looks like the investigation found no evidence of anyone else involved.

True.

How many times when there is a mass murder so, so,so many are convinced the suspect had to have help? I would guess and, say, every single time!

I've often wondered why that is the automatic assumption, when time after time, after time, its proven to be untrue.

LOL! I have to admit at times, I've thought this>>> 'How many cases does it take for others to know, sole perpetrators commit mass murder right by themselves?'

In fact mass murder is very often carried out by one murderer., and not the other way around.

So many times I just dont understand why so many make that automatic leap.

In fact sole mass murderers not only carry out the mass murder, they are solely involved in the discarding of all of the bodies if the victims are removed from the location where the murders took place. They are also the only one involved in the coverup, and aftermath.

Guy Heinz Jr. in Georgia, right by himself, murdered 8 of his family members, and attempted to murder a 3 year old child, who miraculously survived.

Those too were gruesome overkills, just like this one, where a deadly bludgeoning weapon was used. And I'm sure most of us remember when Richard Speck murdered 8 women by stabbing each one to death.

What it painfully shows is a bludgeoning weapon of choice by one murderer, can end the lives of a great number of innocent victims at one time. It doesn't take a gun to destroy many multiple victims at one time.

Imo, bludgeoning weapons cause a great amount of suffering to victims, including prolonged pain before they die. Imo, CM specifically chose this up close, and personal weapon to end the lives of all 4.

So I've never questioned Merritt being capable of murdering all four, with two being totally defenseless little boys.

Imo, his weapon of choice reveals a lot about who he truly is inside, and how evil to the core he still is, and who he was when he took all four lives.

Just think, he gruesomely overkills each one. Little tiny boys laying dead with their skulls crushed in along with their mom, and dad, and what does CM do?

He sits right down, and starts helping himself to his dead victim's money.

It shows how stone cold, and callous he really was that fateful night. It also shows why he deserves death, and nothing less.

She ‘cleaned off’ a palm print from the outside kitchen window? WTH?

Great post. I hope that the prosecution team reads this, then uses it in their closing! Thank You!

Oh good, not all DNA testimony today lol

I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion about the bleach that Suzanna Ryan noted on Summer's panties. ??

I think because this is something that came up in earlier testimony... when McGee asked the CSI tech if it could have been urine.

I am surprised that the prosecution didn't bring up and challenge her on the fact that Ryan was able to determine there was DNA consistent with Merritt's on the passenger door. This has been something they have mentioned numerous times, that his DNA wasn't found on that side of the Trooper, so I would think they would want to challenge her on that interpretation, unless maybe they couldn't and didn't want to highlight that fact.
