California fire chief arrested in stabbing death

By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press

Updated 8:27 pm, Friday, May 16, 2014

He was dirty and disheveled but was arrested unarmed and without incident near where he had abandoned his official California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection pickup in a Sacramento suburb May 1. <snip>

Investigators had feared that Fleming, 55, would use his unique skills and tools to escape into a remote area. Fleming has considerable outdoor skills, was familiar with California's mountains because of his career as a wildland firefighter, and had keys to state fire facilities throughout the state.
Yet there was no sign that Fleming used those skills, Meux and Jones said, other than a blind determination to avoid capture. more at link:http://www.sfgate.com/news/science/...-chief-arrested-in-stabbing-death-5484190.php

Looking everywhere from Canada to Mexico for him and he never left town! Sounds like he even did some travel around town too. All I can say is that I hope it rained some of those nights. And I hope it was cool some nights. I hope the bugs were bad too. Do they have fire ants there?

From the way it sounds I think he knew he was going to get caught. But he just wasn't going to make it easy and turn himself in.

Oh the pain of knowing you are within sight. I hope he feared every glaze his way. That's at least comfort. He did fess up, that's good, is there anything else, nah. He murdered her, no hit on the head, no bipolar starting in the 50's, maybe drug or alcohol abuse, that's all. jmo

I'm calling BS. He had help from someone in that area and that person does not want to get in trouble so he stepped out (and it wasn't from a bush). IMO

I agree with you. He's clean-shaven, for one. Unless a shaving kit grows on trees / vegetation, he definitely had help! :moo:

I agree... the one thing that really stuck out last night on the news, Fleming, in his mugshot, barely had any beard/facial growth. No way he did not shave for two weeks.

See what I mean! :waitasec:

It is so irritating - remember I posted upthread, pictures of Fleming clean shaven and bald? Taking off his moustache was easy, but it was SOOOO time-consuming getting his bald head to look right.

If only I'd thought then, that just taking off the moustache was an option!

Mr Z thinks it's possible he just used bathroom facilities at a cafe or store, and purchased a pack of throwaway razors? I did notice during the presser, Det. Meux said that despite all the publicity, they were still coming across local people who had never heard about the case. Would a man shaving in a public bathroom look odd in Elk Grove, I wonder? Or would people just think he was a homeless person, if they didn't recognize him from TV?

I suspect if he did get help, he is never going to reveal it. And I don't suppose anyone who helped is likely to come forward now.....

One article which I can't find now, mentioned where he exited, I think. Something like Concourse, though I don't think that's the right word. At the presser they said he was going to get some food when he was caught.

Maybe there is a shopping center or street, nearby?

Cosumnes.. there's a Community College nearby

That detective called for help and followed the bus, where he confronted the man as he disembarked near Cosumnes River College.

I use to live very close to there, within 1/4-1/2 mile....

I can see him shaving in a bathroom with disposable razors, but to keep that look, he would have to shave a couple of days... let alone getting food or whatever. It just seems odd he wouldn't leave the area if he was out and about that often. It also seemed odd in the presser that they claimed he could have gone to the thrift store to buy other clothes?

Thanks for the word! I recognize it now I see it.

Talking of which, I was just following a local twitter news, which linked to an interview with a woman who says she thought she saw Fleming (maybe served him in a store?) but wasn't certain until she saw news of the arrest. That may provide a clue to how he kept hidden.

Trying to find the interview, I managed to close the twitter window. When I went back to CBS twitter where I thought I'd been, it wasn't that one. :( Didn't find the interview either.

It has just struck me it may have been Fox, I'll try again and post if I find it.

Mmm. I'm having trouble with twitter at this time, but here is a map showing Cosumne College, which is where Fleming alighted from the bus. Seems like he was heading into a busy part of town, really, for a wanted person?

It was lunchtime too, so broad daylight. Strange.

That CBS FB is also sharing a link about a missing woman, Cindy Cory, who hasn't been seen since leaving work Monday??!!

I can't find any other news about it though.

It isn't exactly a busy part of town, maybe lots of car traffic, but you are right in a sense, lots of people around that campus.

My other big Hmmm on this case... police said he did not have his guns. They acted so nonchalant about it, like it was no biggy. So where are his guns if they weren't on him and weren't in his house/etc???

I guess Fleming could have just been lucky on not being identified... still seems odd to me. But the guns are somewhere and maybe with someone.

I'd like to see pics of where exactly he claims he was hiding. Elk Grove is not the most bushy place around :(

Yes, detective Meux said LE hadn't had a chance to view that location/s 'yet'.

So I am guessing Fleming will be asked to point them out to police today sometime, and press will be pushing for photographs too?

Wonder how the dogs used did not find his scent from the abandoned vehicle to wherever he was hiding in the bushes?
