I thought we were not allowed to discuss this as being a hoax. Am I wrong?

As far as I know we are not allowed to try and convince others. We're entitled to our opinion, though. Basically, no reasons can be given.

<modsnip> I tend to agree that the offering of the huge reward did change the dynamic of the case and led to SP being located within 24 hours.

The key to the case imo is the apparent sighting at the truck stop with the two men.

Bear with me, but I did a little research on the Redding area (next to SP’s home) because I thought it might provide broader context (and because I traveled through the general area – my observations below if you get through this post). Many are focusing on sex trafficking, but statistically, what kind of crimes happen in the area? Of course these may have nothing to do with SP’s case but sex crimes and drugs are very serious issues there.

SEX CRIMES: Redding was named the 5[SUP]th[/SUP] most dangerous place in the United States for women in 2012 – specifically because of high rates of sexual assaults.
http://www.forbes.com/sites/meghanc...women-anchorage-fairbanks-flint/#7a8c4e4238fe

SEX TRAFFICKING: Redding/Shasta County also does have an issue with sex trafficking, but it’s not considered a major hub like Sacramento. Still, there is a group entirely dedicated to countering sex trafficking there. One of the group’s members believes she saw SP with 2 males at a gas station 2 days before her release. (She called police.)

Please note that average age of a victim is 13 and SP does not fit the profile at all – also it doesn’t seem most women/girls are grabbed off the street. Often they are runaways, at risk, fall in with a bad boyfriend, etc. (Lisa Ling did a really good segment on this.)

DRUGS: Humboldt County/Eureka (neighboring Shasta County) has a reputation as a major marijuana producer, but Humboldt has actually been named one of 28 “High Intensity Drug Traffic Areas” in the United States and there are very serious drug issues (meth, heroin) in Redding as well. The cartels are active in Humboldt, and the indication is that these are local cartels (especially the marijuana farm owners, who have long fought the DEA). Mexican/Colombian/other Central American cartels are also very powerful of course, running drugs through California, and up to Canada.
SP was working occasionally in Eureka, coming in from Redding – remarkable given that it’s a 3.5 hour trek through the mountains each way.

GENERAL CRIME: (dated info, quoted verbatim from TIME) “There were 1,298 violent crimes in the Redding metro area in 2012, up from 851 violent crimes in 2007. On a standardized, per 100,000 resident basis, violent crime rose more than 53% in that time. Additionally, property crimes rose by more than 50%, the most of any metro area reviewed, despite a nationwide 12.7% decline in such crimes during that time. According to the Redding Record Searchlight, some area residents believe that the area’s high crime rates may be related to marijuana cultivation. Officials in Shasta County — which makes up the Redding metro area — recently elected to ban outdoor growing, although the city of Redding is not included in the ban.”
http://time.com/6729/10-cities-where-violent-crime-is-soaring/

While I don’t mean to insult Redding or her nearby town, when I stayed in that area of northern California earlier this year I was shocked by how hard up people seemed. Struggling towns, big and small, with people literally walking down the street tweaking from meth or slumped over from heroin — Eureka, sadly, was the worst; I have lived and worked in several war zones and lived in many crime-infested cities in the U.S., and not exactly in the nicest neighborhoods, and I’ve never seen such drug use or frankly, felt so vulnerable. These towns are absolutely gorgeous, set up against the mountains, with an old west feel and impressive history, but also with dilapidated infrastructure, crime, homelessness and hard drugs. So very, very sad; my bestie’s parents moved up near there to a “nicer” town by the area’s standards and it’s still a drug den. Not an ethnically diverse region at all (and very isolated, not near any airports) and I saw a few Confederate flags, unusual in California of course. This case caught my eye because the area (though I never went to SP’s town) really made an impression on me, in stark contrast to my travels there in the ‘80s and ‘90s. (Cute though struggling back then, just not so depressed.)

On another note, given that we don’t know much about her, I’m still curious about SP’s race issue(s), if any. SP’s alleged letter on the Skinheadz website (which some have denied she wrote) where she supposedly brawled with several Latinos/Latinas; her Pinterest board on “Cultural Differences” which appears authentic, is strongly Islamophobic and pins “white identity” and also, interestingly, Native American quotes. These are worth noting, though they too, of course, may have nothing to do with the case. I found reports of the head shaving (unclear here but it seems part of her hair was shaved and chopped as well) troubling, and wonder about her supposed blog. There is so little information and I don’t want to speculate on what happened and the fact is that she was injured. How badly and by whom, it doesn’t matter. She was injured.

Given the branding I would also be curious about which groups engage in that – not just the obvious based on her ID of the captors (Hispanic gangs) but also rape gangs or sexual predators, white gangs (possibly white supremacists, who usually embrace violence) and drug cartels, simply because of her location, the criminal elements and the demography of the area.

A couple of other random things to note:

+ Many interviews have been given to the British tabloid, The DailyMail. The DailyMail pays for stories. Most U.S. tabloids do not (but websites such as TMZ and Radar do.) 20/20 (which the husband will be interviewed for Friday) does not per an ABC policy.

+ The issue with the driver not seeing her hair chopped – it was 4:30 a.m. and she was driving 70 mph down a dark highway. Unless her head was totally shaved I don’t see this as a discrepancy.

+ The husband’s poetic statement: He could be a writer or perhaps had someone else, perhaps a professional writer but not a professional statement drafter, write it for him. I don’t see much odd here either.

+ If they had something to hide I would question why the husband is doing so many interviews and giving statements.

Excellent post

I see many people objecting to Keith making a statement regarding SP's horrific treatment at the hands of her two abductors. I disagree. Here we are on what is almost certainly the most well moderated board discussing this case and I've seen literally hundreds of posts claiming the abduction was a hoax or scam; either for "" money or some other equally questionable form of compensation.

Lets look at the facts to date:
1. The family feared abduction due to what they claimed was Sherri's devotion to her children and SP+KP's happy marriage. Rumors of murder or hoax swirl. FACT: Confirmed as an abduction.
2. The father-in-law led the charge to clear KP's name from the rumors swirling around claiming he was responsible and may have murdered SP by detailing Keith's cooperation and the exculpatory evidence in his favor, which was picked up and reported in the media. FACT: following the media outrage that erupted the Sheriff office had to admit that they had no evidence connecting Keith to the crime and that he had passed a polygraph.
3. In a desperate attempt to try to get Sherri released, the family cooperated with a hostage negotiator retained by the anonymous donor who put up $50k. The family had already raised $50k within hours of Sherri being abducted for information leading to her release. As the deadline for the reverse ransom approached, both the family and hostage negotiator went public that if the deadline was passed all of the funds to date plus additional funds from the account would be used for rewards to anyone that would provide information that would lead to SP's freedom. FACT: within 48 hours of those statements Sherri Papini was released alive and heavily battered but "hoax claim's swirl again".

Sherri Papini's release very arguably had nothing to do with law enforcement's efforts and everything to do with the action's taken by the family, the public via social media and canvassing posters throughout the state, the news network reports, the anonymous donor and Cameron Gamble.

4. The Sheriff makes a statement comparing Sherri's hospital treatment and release to a sprained ankle, downplaying the severity of her injuries. To counter it KP releases a bare minimum of facts, confirming the "heavily battered" condition reported by the CHP and adds basically one shocking detail: that Sherri had been branded. FACT: The Sheriff immediately complains that Keith Papini has compromised the investigation by releasing the branded detail but the Sheriff himself goes even farther and reveals that the branding was not of a symbol or merely a contact wound, but a message of some sort branded onto Sherri.

In my opinion, nothing has been compromised on this case except the ability to more easily disclude any kooks who may come forward claiming to be an abductor. No evidence not already known by the abductors was released by KP or the family. There are those that believe that LE has a right to clamp a cone of silence over every aspect of a case. There are others that believe the public has a right to know every detail. The truth most likely lies somewhere in between where enough evidence is released to prevent innocent people, like KP or SP from being persecuted by the public.

A few closing thoughts:
I believe, but obviously can't be certain, that the abduction of SP is sex-trafficking related. For those that argue Sherri doesn't fit the profile due to age, marital status, and motherhood I would argue that she doesn't look her age and the abductor's likely had no idea of her identity, age or marital status.

I believe there were no outside motives; grudges, debts, etc. that precipitated SP's abduction. No facts supporting such an allegation have been made public. As the Sheriff stated, the Papini's are of modest means, SP has spent the last 5 years of her life working, being pregnant, and having two children. KP has a good steady job, no misdemeanors or felonies. Both have spotless enough records to be issued CCW permits in California with the pre-requisite state and federal record checks and finger-printing.

As previously stated I believe it was the media attention and reward offers that caused SP to be released, plus perhaps she was able to psychologically persuade one or both during her imprisonment. Hopefully the perpetrators will be caught and we will get more answers.

I do not believe any reward or ransom was paid for Sherri's release. Cameron Gamble has stated none was paid publicly. Unless you have proof a reward was, the only evidence we have is one was not paid. I also don't think calling 911 while driving past Sherri at 65mph qualifies you for one. The fact is, at that point in time Sherri had already obtained her freedom on her own. Even the trucker that stopped and assisted her isn't entitled to it, the reward was for her release and freedom, not for providing a blanket and some comforting words while waiting for the CHP to arrive. Should either of these people receive some stipend for their kind actions? In my mind yes, but certainly nowhere near what some have suggested..

I also don't feel the November 22nd purported sighting at the truck stop was accurate. No mention of a broken nose or facial bruising was made.

I wish Sherri and her family all the best while they try to recover from this traumatic experience and hope they and their children have the merriest of Christmases.

I dunno. Three weeks seems to be a very big window of time to hold someone as a hoax for business. ETA: It's a big chunk of time open to get caught holding SP captive, especially when there was an intense hunt to find her.

Mahalo. I don't know I'm with you I'm troubled by being taken and released, among KP saying "bring her home, bring her home, bring her home." I feel he knew who he was talking too, and it wasn't two Hispanic women.

Was there something SP was up too? JMHO .... I'm troubled by all the answers KP seems to have. Mods, let me explain please. I read but don't post very often.

KP seems to have answers to a lot of questions the public has JMHO, WHY? HOW?

I know I'd be a wreck if my husband, or my niece (she lives with us and goes to UH) if either one was missing. I meditate and am usually can stay poised but a
Loved One Missing would probably make me go ballistic.

There is something off here, something we are missing.

Was there a boyfriend before KP, or during her first marriage. ... I don't know, something is just off.

JMHO

When I was young (in my 20s but looked like a teenager) I was approached at a bus stop in the Bay Area by a fast talking guy who asked me "You're not from around here, are you?" I replied yes I was. He said "You've got an accent, you must be new to the area." Not new, lived here all my life. "You don't sound like it. Do you need a place to stay?' Finally another man came over and shooed him away. I think he was scouting out young girls for the trade. That's probably more how they do it than kidnapping jogging mothers.

<modsnip> Do you think that's what happened to this 34 year old woman? Some guy pulled over while she was jogging and asked if she needed a place to stay, and she said "sure", and jumped in his car?

Including beating and torturing her for three weeks? That's dedication.

Sounds bizarre, I agree. I just think it's suspicious how CG inserted himself into this case. And his promotional video is disturbing and creepy in light of SP's ordeal. There's an abundance of grandiosity bordering on magical thinking swirling around this story. Moo

My guess is if the FBI is still trying to follow the $ they can't confirm anything. I think FBI would take over investigation on ransom?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

It's late and I may be confused, but, if the monies for the ransom were donated, and the ransom was not paid, and then the donor(s) said to give the monies that were raised, to the Ps, then there's nothing to track. You are allowed to donate money to fundraising efforts.

Although CG appears to have some questionable characteristics, I tend to agree that the offering of the huge reward did change the dynamic of the case and led to SP being located within 24 hours.

The key to the case imo is the apparent sighting at the truck stop with the two men.

I can't help but wonder if the anonymous donor and his money ever existed. Like the imaginary lyrics appearing on the wall, it may have only existed in CG's head. For his own self-aggrandizement, hostages need to be taken at regular intervals. Yeah, I just don't trust the guy. He's absolutely sketchy.

I'm a firm believer in the value of everyone, children, men, women, the elderly, and everyone in between being able to enhance their abilities to defend themselves against any/all evildoers, but one particular portion of CG's Vimeo video that I wasn't a fan of was the implied suggestion that the successful abilty to 'save' oneself from imminent danger is almost dependant on him.

I just want to insert a teeny bit of logic about the human trafficking theory. First I want to say I 100% believe SP could easily be trafficked.

The growers in the hills take captives for this. I don't have an article to link readily, but in the past 28 days I've definitely read a few stories, blogs and tweets about it. The girls (and boys) are typically drawn to do the clipping for easy cash. But if your a little bit pretty you have more value in other ways besides clipping. When they are done with you, they don't release you. They kill you.

If you peek around the escort section of craigslist (not recommended for the faint of heart), then read articles (they are available via Google) from girls/women who got out you will see that generally 2-3 people hold captive 1-2 girls for YEARS and brand them with a hard-to-hide tattoo, sexually peddle them, sell them, but never ever ever let them out of their sights while they 'own' them. Some girls/boys get away under extenuating circumstances, but usually they just get used up.

And if they're monitored 24/7, who are they going to ask for help from, a jon? Those creepers know exactly the situation, and they're counting on not getting caught. They aren't going to say a word or they won't get future service, iykwim.

Most of these missing youths never ever reappear in society, not counting the ones who got away somehow. Yes, maybe a few are released after their income potential diminishes, but where are the rest?

My logic insertion is this.... In the case of SP... If they thought she was traffickable, it could be that they got mad when they realized her age after abduction and didn't want her. Still, I honestly doubt they would have spent all of their precious time torturing her. I think they just would have killed her and buried her in the woods.

And if they took her for any other reason than the one we don't yet know about, I think they would have just killed her well before risking being caught with her.

And with all the national coverage, they took great risk by releasing her. They could have easily killed her, buried her, and went on about their lives and probably gotten away with it.

Therefore, I don't believe this is a case of potential trafficking. I think this is a targeted message of hate. SP may not even be the target, just the messenger. Someone(s) is very angry and hateful, and I think this is a hate crime meant to hurt whomever the message is for, and all who surround that person. I think we will see another "message" find its way into their world at some point. JMO

Thanks for your analysis, Redcliff. It's a very thought-provoking post.

OK, what does that have to do with this case? You didn't get sucked into it at age 20. Do you think that's what happened to this 34 year old woman? Some guy pulled over while she was jogging and asked if she needed a place to stay, and she said "sure", and jumped in his car?

I don't think she was targeted for sex trafficking. That's all I'm saying. Kidnapping someone is risky. There are easier ways to find young girls.

My hubby is not involved in following this "case"...I've shared w/ him highlights & he said there is NO way he would
go above LE. Also, he can't understand the upcoming 20/20 interview...I'm won't post what he said.<modsnip>

Darn, I wanna know! message me...
