If you take the case back down to the basics, what's so puzzling to me is that the perpetrator chose to move three victims-- including one who is 6' and 200 lbs.-- another who is a young child--and one of the three in medical distress. Even with a gun, doesn't it make it difficult to subdue three people while driving? And if he tied them up so that they couldn't move/ escape, wouldn't AL be difficult to carry? Wouldn't the person in medical distress potentially create a lot of issues for him?

What's the likelihood that there were several perpetrators?
What's the likelihood that this kidnapping/ crime was not premeditated but an argument gone awry?

Also, the perpetrator(s) made the risky decision to remove the victims from the scene, which spread evidence and the chance to get caught across a bigger area. There has to be a reason he chose to kidnap them all--that is unless the struggle was between the grandparents and there is no outside perpetrator-- just someone helping to destroy evidence.

When I try to walk through what happened, leaving the current suspect out of the equation, I always come back to the logistics of what it would take to move and hide three victims. That's a tall order.

I somehow feel that the violence that took place in the home was not premeditated but rather the result of a nasty dispute that escalated. We do not know anything about the weapon used to cause the 'medical distress'; stabbing, blunt force trauma? I'm wondering if the weapon was seized from the home. If the three family members were forced from the home, I'm wondering if the perp used a gun as a threat. It would be interesting to know whether any weapons were seized during the search of the Garland property? I must say, however, that reading the recent news of the AL bankrupt company I wonder if this contributed to the Sunday night happenings. There seem to be a number of possibilities. Something just doesn't add up! It's all mind boggling, to say the least.

The truck was seen many times through out the day/evening. In the photo of the truck it is light out, so I am assuming that was before 10pm.

It's still light at 10 in Calgary and twilight adds another hour to that even with the spotty clouds that evening. sunrise would've been about 5 am with a good 30 mins of brighter twilight preceding sunrise. Maybe DG was asked by AL to keep watch over his house that evening as they were leaving town or something to that effect.

To Otto, the pictures are correct of the embankment but those are sunnier days,, the days prior were rainy and digging in sandstone soil is beyond labourious. I'll try to find pictures from the bottom side or from Stanley park, it's actually quite steep in parts, and very used at the bottom.

IMO the family must have seen or heard something that provides enough answers to keep them from speaking out and making continued pleas for NO, AL and KL to be found. The media is so interested they would have access to so many people in getting the word out. I believe that LE knows alot more than they are saying and are waiting for it all to come together (forensics, etc). In the meantime they dont want to give the perps to much in hopes he/she cracks. All JMO

One last speculative 'observation'. Earlier someone posted about brain matter. If there was brain matter, teeth, etc., it would imply that the head/face was attacked. Head trauma produces a lot of blood - no one in the vicinity reported hearing gun shots, so it had to have been a beating. Face = crime of passion.

Re three of them being moved. Speculating... It could be that it was only KL that was in need of medical attention. If NO was asleep but woke up and Al got caught (it could be that he tried to kill his wife while NO was sleeping and just would have left KL and NO behind) he might have lied to NO and say that they had to get KL to the hospital and loaded them in and to a secondary residence (Garland's?) Maybe that's why k-9 is there. To see if KL is still alive? Or if she was left in a field some place. jmo

Crime of passion : money, pride or matrimonial ?

How many bankruptcies have the grandparents had? Sounds like most recent one was this spring.

And when did they list and sell their house?

Doesn't an estate sale imply that one is moving so far away that they're selling everything? Wouldn't they be moving this stuff to Edmonton?

I know the picture you mean, and in looking for it, found these.

Front left quarter panel and wheel well - no mud

Right Passenger side of truck, front right quarter panel and wheel well - mud

Rear bumper - zoomed in, I can't see anything

Good observation.

Thank you for finding these Wondergirl!
I see that it was the day before, July 3rd, not the 4th, no wonder I had so much trouble!

I tend to talk(yell) at the TV when these news stories are on, and during that one I was yelling to my husband, "Why is that truck still there? Why are they allowing people to touch it? Look there's dried mud on the right front wheel well! That truck needs to be impounded!"

That's interesting and IMO would make logical sense as an escalated domestic dispute caused by stress and money.

Kl had a personal bankruptcy a couple years ago and AL had a business go bust only 13 days ago. Home was sold in December 2013 and was being leased back. They may be downsizing as well as moving and in need of furniture of an appropriate scale to the new space.

I'm following the money. *Everything* reported about the L's is about getting rich, making a quick buck. They had just declared bankruptcy and yet it was reported that they were handing out flyers about their estate sale at the Casino.

JMO but the oil and gas business is a mainstay regarding the economy of Alberta, many large companies buy the smaller junior companies out if they have something to offer. I have relatives in Calgary involved within this industry. and I can't figure this bankruptcy out.

Healthy companies survived changes in oil/gas exploration taxes.

"The Conservatives are pushing to close a popular corporate loophole - which could boost federal revenues by nearly $3-billion in half a decade - and, for the oil sands, slow writeoffs of lease expenses and mine investments. It's a shift intended to boost the tax load on energy companies that have seen profits surge on triple-digit crude oil prices.

"The government is of the view that with oil prices where they are, the industry is quite healthy. And it would appear to be their view that corporations don't need the same rapid writeoffs they've had in the past," said Brian Carr, a tax partner with KPMG and an expert in resource taxation. Oil and gas companies "won't like" the changes, he said."

If AL used the truck to transport KL 'to the hospital' with NO, it could be that he hosed the truck down (of the blood) before he (and whomever else) headed back (into town?) to put the truck back... which could be why only one panel was muddy. It was a quick and dirty 'wash'. jmo

IF there was such a high level of tension between AL and KL, surely JO would have sensed it and not left NO behind?

Surely AL would have no interest, at the age of 66, of running away with a 5 year old kid belonging to his wife's daughter?

I think something happened to AL and KL, not between them.

We have a hint about AL and DG relationship, what about Kl and DG?

was their truck for sale during the estate sale? I have another theory, brb, must go googling.

Wonder if there is a storm shelter on the G's farm and if so, did LE find it? I doubt DG would have told them about it if there was one. moo
