Is this perhaps the wrong link Dion? I don't see a picture with his face covered??

It's the one of him in an airport that has been previously posted, I think it's 1999 so 15 years ago...

**Ooops just noticed otto posted this already, duplicate post!***

I think we're both thinking along the same lines. These murders are so beyond normal that his mental health issues could form the basis for a defence.

I'm really surprised that Garland was escorted to see the JP in such a public fashion. No underground tunnel or perp walk behind chain link fence and barbed wire. He didn't appear to be wearing a bullet proof vest either. Media and members of the public were literally inches away from the accused .

I've spent many hours in courtrooms, seen many accused come in from holding cells and very few of them who have been there for nearly 24 hrs appear as un rumpled as this guy. His t-shirt looks as though it has been freshly ironed. Just strikes me as odd.

No words. How can anyone murder a 5-year-old, especially who is part of one's family? The shock of finding the McStays' remains last fall had most people asking, "How can anyone do this to two young boys?" Witness or not, I cannot even fathom the depth of depravity to commit such horrendous acts. And DG's sister has children by AL's son who are related to both families.

Watch: DG has established in the past that he had several "mental breakdowns" over lesser events in his life. Such a convenient excuse to use going forward.

Prayers out to the Liknes and O'Brien families. This is beyond heartbreaking.

Pretty sure they took him to the courthouse which is straight in the middle of downtown calgary and there is no such underground tunnel. There is underground parking to the courthouse but even then I am sure the media would have had access to that.

A judge and prosecutor were kept up until the middle of the night to lay charges, most likely with the hope that the media would have gone home and left them to do their job quietly ... also to protect the rights of the presumed innocent.

I wonder who DG's lawyer will be, allan fay maybe? he's pretty popular with defending murderers.

I find it disturbing that he felt relaxed and comfortable enough to find time to shave his beard.

Could be the hair had some struggle evidence?? Like KL pulled off a strand of his hair? Or it was stained with blood? In any case he probably did some "refreshing" or "grooming" after the crime.

What was that picture about? What happened at that airport back then?

Alain Hepner

I think the best that any criminal defence lawyer can do is get treatment for the accused. I suspect that there is enough evidence for a conviction.

DG took on the Supreme Court of Canada and represented himself and won back in 2002...It absolutely amazes me yet others pay for expensive well known lawyers and loose..go figure.

Guess we will just have to hope that the forensic and circumstantial evidence holds up

I don't remember having ever been looking forward with such anticipation to seeing the current picture of a murder suspect. All the last 10+ days we only heard about this guy and seen his old picture and court drawings, almost giving me a surreal feeling discussing about this POI who stole a 14 year old car crash victim's identity. Now it just showed this guy actually exists, and looks nothing peculiar.

Kim Ross represented him during the recent court appearance for the ID theft. Here is an article on another case of his.

Interesting comment from your linked article, which involves using a mental disorder as a foundation for a defence. I suppose that could be why the suspect chose Kim Ross.

"Under the Criminal Code a person who commits an offence while suffering a mental disorder which renders them incapable of appreciating what they were doing can't be held criminally responsible."

I found the person on twitter who did the sketch of garland the first time and she will be there again tomorrow, should be interesting to see how much his demeanor has changed from the first sketch to the second

I think one reason the investigators decided to charge him with murder despite not finding the bodies was that they, like many of us, believe that the bodies were destroyed in such a way that the chance of ever recovering them is extremely slim.

Very, very sad for the family. How could JO have known that when she left Nathan at her parents' house, she would never see the three loved ones ever again?
