Sentencing today for man convicted of sexually assaulting N.S. teen

BRIDGEWATER, N.S. -- A sentencing hearing is scheduled today for a man convicted of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy who said he was confined in a remote cabin in Nova Scotia for more than a week.

A jury also found John Leonard MacKean guilty in March of communicating for the purpose of obtaining sexual services from a person under 18.

The rapist needs to serve more time. WTH is going on in Canada? What message is this sending to potential buyers of this "service?" Sexual slavery is rape and needs to be punished appropriately. JMO

In this case, failure to assist an underage captive to escape, to me at least, indicates that the rapist is also a co-kidnapper.:jail:

Completely ridiculous sentence!

I'm just curious, but do you think that if it was some politician's 16 year old daughter who was held against her will and someone came in and raped her that he would only get 2 years??

This was a kid!! This is rape. I thought the minimum sentences for sexual assault were much longer!

One of two men convicted of chaining and sexually assaulting a 16-year-old boy in a Nova Scotia cabin has died in prison.
John Leonard MacKean, 65, had served less than two months of his two-year prison sentence when he died at the Springhill Institution in Nova Scotia, CTV Atlantic’s Kayla Hounsell reported Thursday.
Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of his death.

Spokeswoman Shannon Oickle of Springhill Institution says John Leonard MacKean, 65, died of natural causes on Wednesday.

MacKean began serving a two-year sentence on June 24 for sexual assault and for communicating for the purpose of obtaining sexual services from a person under 18.
