Reminder:

This father is a victim along with all the other parents involved here and is to be treated as such.

The man is grieving ahead of what he truly believes will be his son's death. There is no manual that tells us how to grieve.

YES. He could have said ' I LOVE YOU SON, please stop and let's figure this out...'

It really bothered me the way Dad said ' he never learned to ride a bike, or drive a car' ---Hey, isn't that the Dad's job? Why didn't he make sure he learned those important things?

And Dad said he craved love and attention but never received it. Again, why not? Isnt that a Dad's responsibility too?

It's like the Dad was quietly blaming the Mother for the boy's issues, and ignoring his own responsibility for this nightmare.

"Alan Schmegelsky said he had a good relationship with his son in the last two years, after not seeing him for many years following a separation from Bryer’s mother. He said he was in contact with his son nearly every day."

Circumstances during those formative years are unknown to us. Bryer's mother has not come forward.

OPP issue safety warning for B.C. murder suspects
"Provincial police in the Northwest region of Ontario have issued a public safety warning in relation to the Northern B.C. homicide suspect.

Mounties are continuing the search for Kam McLeod and Bryer Schmelgelsky across the country."
"OPP say it appears the suspects are headed in an easterly direction. They are considered dangerous and residents are asked not to approach them if spotted.

Anyone with information is asked to immediately call 9-1-1."

Supporting the theory these guys do not intend on hiding very long. They would've taken any necessary equipment with them for sustaining themselves in the woods. Especially having traveled from BC with it.

'Beardy could tell the vehicle didn’t belong to someone in the area because there are so few SUVs in the community. He could also see a variety of camping equipment inside.'

True. He is in a hard place. But can we comment on his comments? It just seemed sad that he seems to be blaming his ex wife, and ignoring his own contributions. Is that offlimits?

I'll echo those of you who have expressed distaste with the father's words. It gives his son's actions a sentimental Jesse James-esque feel which is exactly how many if not all of these people who mentally defect and go on killing sprees want their awful actions to come across.

That father may not know how to better express himself but that statement from him is shameful. I realise that may sound harsh of me.

I just watched a brief clip of the father and he is absolutely crushed. I don't think he knows how to deliver a message to his son. He seems consumed with grief and the knowledge that his son is forever gone from his life - he seems to be living as though his son is already deceased. I hope that mental health professionals reach out to him and help him through this.

Terrible situation for everyone.

Ontario!!? This is very local to me. Scary to think they're headed this way. Has the dead guy 2km from the burned vehicle been identified? I'm guessing maybe they killed him, took his keys and vehicle, set their vehicle on fire and hit the road again in the dead guys car

The car fire wasn’t set in Gillam,,,in was near a reserve about 90 kms away from a Gillam iirc

Yes, just north, 55km. The road this was on, Hwy 290, eventually leads into a dead end. A road to nowhere. I wonder if they drove to the end and had to turn back, then ran out of gas.

“An SUV matching the description of the vehicle McLeod and Schmegelsky were driving, a grey Toyota Rav4, was found on fire Monday night near Fox Lake Cree Nation, north of the town of Gillam.

Gillam is 55 kilometres southwest of Fox Lake Cree Nation, where the torched SUV was found in bush off Highway 290 — which links the two communities along the Nelson River...”

I have mixed reactions. First, my heart broke for him. Second, I had the same thoughts as kaytdid23 expressed - the boy wasn't parented and you're the parent! Third, I wished for a plea for the young men to contact LE so LE can keep the situation safe for everyone.

But perhaps the most useful response is to accept this an an invitation to nurture connections we have in our lives.

I would be very surprised if there is any cellular coverage in this region.
Yep there's cell coverage in town the Bush is doubtful. There has been no real sign of them since Gilliam. They could be anywhere could of hitchhiked or went in the bushes or stole a car or broke into a house. I think they planned their destination out. No one accidentally goes to Gilliam there's nothing really past there

I don’t like the victim blaming of the parents. Most parents do the best they can do considering their socioeconomic situation, education, mental health issues such as addictions etc. Not all parents are social workers, psychologist etc and are not trained to know what is the norm and what isn’t. Some parents who may appear dumb to us may be functioning at a lower intellectual level than we are but do the best they can. We don’t know all the details regarding the parents of M and S. Let’s not be judgemental. What if they were your boys?

I totally agree with everything BS's dad has said
about his son's psychological pain.
And I also agree this whole plan was a suicide
mission with no hope of ending up alive.
BS was an orphan at 5 yrs. old and raised himself on video games. His father is right on.

We don't know BS childhood but he was not an orphan.
He has a father and grandmother that are speaking for him:

Schmegelsky’s grandmother, C S, said McLeod and Schmegelsky left Port Alberni on July 12 to find work in Whitehorse. When they arrived in Whitehorse a few days later, they decided it wasn’t what they had expected. Starkey, who was last in touch with her grandson on July 13 or 14, isn’t sure what their plans were after that.

Schmegelsky had been living with his grandmother for the last two years. “He was a great kid. I really enjoyed having him,” she said.
