At 1.20 of video, the reconstruction artist discusses the uid's facial features.
Also, asking around, a former East Coast sailor told me that it would not be uncommon at all, for a ship worker/ sailor or fisherman's mom, to put her son's initials on his underwear, fwiw.

This would not be considered a good match if taken at face value, but,
if this missing person was to lose his teeth and put on weight over the years?
Cannot see forehead in this pic, but pointy nose and chin, coupled perhaps later in life, with protruding cheekbones, due to lacking teeth..
Long shot, but maybe?

Did they ever reveal an estimated age, or am I just too blind? I'm not sure how well linked our missing persons databases are up here. :/

Cannot locate link right now, but thread heading says estimated age given is 21-35 years old.

HA! I really am blind.

The crimestoppers link says, " No match has been found with any missing person cases since the body was recovered." I see the CBC story says the same. I wonder how accurate this is, ie in terms of "any."

Unfortunately http://www.canadasmissing.ca/index-eng.htm doesn't seem particularly comprehensive, as it says it is just a "sampling" of MP/UID. It's also not particularly easy to navigate.

I think some of the areas along the Gaspé and some of those smaller islands are quite remote and may not have the infrastructure or systems in place for information sharing. Hopefully though the new visuals will reach more areas.

Does anyone else think that he looks as if he may have suffered from acromegaly?

A couple of extreme long shots with the initials found on his underwear. The age and height are not too far off.

The location and the timing is way off in both but the condition of teeth suggest to me that the decedent might have lived homeless or off the grid for quite some time so that wouldn't necessarily worry me.

The resemblance to the bust is not breathtaking.
Not too many people with such facial proportions...

Wish they'd have showed it with different hairstyles and facial hair. If he had hair he or his barber might have been trying to do things to disguise the forehead

Great catch Donjeta, both look interesting, especially Lopez.
Also wish uid pic showed him with some hair, maybe even clothing, to give a better idea..
Ita, someone with those unusual features may well have 'hidden" behind a hairstyle , a beard, or even a hat, at one time

Still thinking about his Jack Daniels chained belt and boots.

The boots are in very good condition and trendy (for the time )..

The reasons I like Lopez: 1) I really do think the UID had acromegly, 2) In the profile view of Lopez, his jaw looks slightly enlarged compared to the other photos, 3) the description states that he may have developed a slight, acquired ear deformity. An enlarged jaw and enlarged (alternately slightly pinched) ears are also associated with the illness.

The poor dentition could also be associated with acromegly - the teeth do not grow while the jaw does, causing increased spacing and, often, tooth loss.

ETA: If the UID does have the condition, his facial proportions could be significantly different from the time he disappeared/earlier pictures.

one of the MP sites said Lopez used to be a wrestler and that's where the ear deformity may have come from.

Acromegaly is a good thought...

rbbm.

"The fact that he has very unique proportions, I think we have a very good chance of success in this one,'' says Fournier.

Still, the forensic artist stresses that his recreation is an approximation.

For instance, the shape of the eyes, the shape of the eyebrows, and the shape of the ears are all essentially guesswork - taking his best stab, if you will.

"You need to keep in mind that this is a facial approximation,'' says Fournier. "It is not perfectly accurate.''

Still, the hope remains that the bust is close enough to the face that once graced this man to trigger recognition by someone - anyone - that either knew the man or had a chance encounter.

"It would be good to put closure to the family because this person ... somebody is waiting for him,'' says Fournier. "For the past 17 years, somebody is waiting for him. So it would be nice to return him to his family.''

The bust can now be added to other details of the man that had already been released by police, notably that the deceased was Caucasian, stood five feet and 11 inches tall, and had poor teeth.

His age has been estimated to be somewhere between 25 and 40 when he died."

Lopez looks like a very real possibility.

has anyone submitted George Lopez?

he seems like the most obvious, given the facial similarities and the initials G.L. on the underwear tag

I didn't, there was only a phone number and it's not convenient for me to call so if anyone wants to go ahead...
