"Toronto police are offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the Cabbagetown murder of Nighisti Semret last year.

The attacker injured his hand and arm during the stabbing and police found a significant amount of his blood on the opening of Semret’s canvas bag, homicide Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said Monday.

Police are asking the public for details on any man matching the suspect’s description who may have badly in"jured his hand or arm. The man possibly didn’t get treatment as suspects are typically wary of questions asked by medical staff, Giroux said

I'm glad to hear that the attacker hurt himself. I was hoping that LE had made more progress though.

Toronto Sun link above.
"Giroux said the DNA did not match anything in the National DNA Data Bank.

And while investigators believes the killer may live in Cabbagetown, Giroux said conducting voluntary DNA tests of area residents would be “an overwhelming task.”

Police are focusing on people who have committed similar crimes, using DNA to rule out suspects.

It’s hoped the reward will entice citizens to take another look at the suspected killer, who can be seen in a series of frame-by-frame images at the Toronto Police website".

Thanks for that update, dotr.

A few thoughts on this:

* The police seem to be no closer to solving this than when it first happened.

* Det.Sgt. Giroux let on that police are not looking for a black male. That seems to be, unless I am forgetting, the first time one race or ethnicity has been positively ruled out. He seemed to be very sure of himself on this.

* Robbery? With this much violence I doubt it. I think that robbery should be considered a possibility, but no more than anything else.

I agree it robbery is not a likely motive.

Giroux seems to think this is a lower class person in fact someone who would be attending soup kitchens etc. Does anyone else see evidence of that from the video - I don't. Perhaps the witnesses suggested this?

Previous post someone suggested LE were discounting the eyewitness evidence - but now the DNA seems to corroborate some of the story of the guy with the umbrella.

Does the rest of his evidence come back into play including the disturbing things he claims he heard the man shouting?

You would think he is lying or telling the truth - it is not something you could easily mistake someone saying.

Not sure if they think she was stalked from the hospital or whether he was hanging there.

LE should do a quick primer in ethnicity in Ethiopia and environs - few "blacks" in the Caribbean or North American sense. I have to admit I personally can figure out little about the suspect, pretty good disguise.

" A full forensic examination of the attack scene, the deceased and the deceased's clothing,
was undertaken with the assistance of the Centre of Forensic Sciences – Biology Section.
Numerous forensic submissions were made.
As a result of this examination the following is alleged:
− the victim scratched her attacker as DNA of a male was found under the fingernails of the
deceased's right hand
− DNA of a male was found on the canvas portion of the umbrella used by the the citizen who
confronted the man as the attack was occurring
− DNA of a male was detected on the black "Catie" canvas bag the victim was seen carrying
− the offender wounded himself during the attack with the knife he was carrying, which he
may or may not have been treated for medically
− the DNA profiles are all from the same male
Investigators are appealing to the public to think back to October 2012, and recall any person
who may have been tending to a hand or arm wound.
The Toronto Police Service is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to the
identification, arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the murder of Nighisti
Semret"

I believe that the people from the Horn of Africa (Eritreans, Ethiopians, Somalis, Djiboutians), are a mixture of Semitic peoples, and Sub-Saharan Africans, so race and ethnicity are more complex.

I also can't figure him for one race or another. He isn't exactly dressed in rags either, so his socioeconomic status is unclear, too.

I buy into the theory that Nicky was not paying the required 'tax' to her country for the privilege of working overseas.

"Ghezae Hagos, who speaks for the Manitoba chapter of the human rights group, called Iman’s claims “outright lies.”

He said that many Eritrean-Canadians had been “shaken down” for money even if they had no business in the nation. Hagos urged the Canadian government to close the consulate immediately.

“The issue is not about the consulate office anymore, which has continued to openly and aggressively defy Canada. It is about the resolve of the Canadian government,” he said.

One Eritrean expatriate in Toronto, who asked not to be named out of fear, said he was forced to pay the tax in late September so that his sister in Eritrea could have her business licence renewed.
"
“They find out if you have family living out of the country so they can collect as much money as possible,” he said through a translator

Lots of hand movement, maybe a watch camera is being activated or weapon choice considered.
Wondering if perp wanted to steal a cellphone from purse to check NS's contacts?

Both victim and suspect are Eritrean ...

Det. John Margetson announced that a man was arrested in connection to female human remains that were located inside a bag in the west end on Friday. He said the investigation is ongoing as the search for more human remains from the victim continues"

The victim's address is very close to NS's home...

"Investigators were searching the city’s transfer station at 400 Commissioners Street for garbage that may have been taken there from two crime scenes: 101 Humber Blvd. S., the accused’s apartment building and 285 Shuter St., believed to be the victim’s apartment building"

4 minutes away from NS murder site.

"Zekarias and Ghirmay worked together in 2011 as cleaning staff in a downtown hotel, Haile said. She didn’t know whether they were dating at the time, but said they were very close friends.

“He was always after her,” Haile said.

She said Ghirmay told her she had emigrated from Eritrea, in the Horn of Africa, a year earlier and that she had a brother in Toronto. Zekarias is also believed to be from Eritrea and may have family in Canada.

When they were laid off from the hotel, they entered a college personal support worker program, she said".

Sorry for so many posts, but surely this is also a coincidence....

"Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said Wednesday that Canada has taken steps to expel the head of the Eritrean Consulate General in Toronto.

A statement from Baird said Semere Ghebremariam O. Micael has been declared persona non grata and must leave by noon next Wednesday".

Sends a message to governments who "go after dual nationals on Canadian soil" ... interesting wording, consistent with assassination operation. Didn't this all happen very near the embassy?
