Police advising residents in the area to go into their basements and lock the doors.

Nova Scotia RCMP have identified the active shooter in the rural community of Portapique, N.S., as 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman.

Police say there are multiple victims but would not say Sunday morning how many people were either injured or killed.

There's 1 difference btwn his car and our RCMP vehicles: the car #. The suspect's car is 28B11, behind rear passenger window. If you see 28B11 call 911 immediately," Nova Scotia RCMP tweeted.

RCMP said Wortman is considered armed and dangerous. Around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, RCMP tweeted that Wortman is currently in the Central Onslow and Debert area west of Truro in the vehicle that looks like an RCMP car and wearing an RCMP uniform.

"If you see him, call 911. DO NOT approach," RCMP tweeted Sunday morning...”

''A Gabriel Wortman is the owner of the Atlantic Denture Clinic at 193 Portland Street in Dartmouth, N.S.

According to Nova Scotia property records, the same man who owns the Atlantic Denture Clinic owns three properties in Portapique, N.S.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., on Saturday, police reported that officers were responding to a firearms complaint.

At that time they asked the public in the area of Portapique Beach Road, Bay Shore Road and Five Houses Road to avoid the area and stay in their homes.

Officers remain on scene Sunday morning and are asking the public to call 911 if there is anyone on their property.

“You may not see the police but we are there with you,” read a tweet issued from the Nova Scotia RCMP Twitter account.

More to come…''

Welcome to Ws simon99, thanks for that important update!

''51-year-old Gabriel Wortman was arrested as the primary suspect in the shooting, which took place in the rural community of Portapique, west of Truro.

A statement from police Sunday morning said there were several victims.''

From video at this link:

There were 3 fires last night in little Portapique (population about 100)
Suspect owns property there

Video shows ambulance leaving scene of where Wortman was apprehended, so not sure whether suspect or officer being transported

Reporter says Wortman owns or worked at denture clinic in Halifax or Truro (canada411 shows it as Dartmouth) and there is video from 2014 of suspect at the clinic (Atlantic Denture Clinic). Audio is a bit difficult due to wind.

There will be an RCMP news conference at 6:00 pm Eastern (and I read somewhere, can't find it now, there will be a presser (I think by Premier) at 2:00 pm Eastern)

I watched PM Justin Trudeau start his daily presser this morning by extending sympathy and referring to it as a "terrible situation" so it is significant enough for the PM to have been apprised of the incident.

Listening live to Nova Scotia Premier right now, it's a COVID-19 update but he talked briefly about the shooting. He used words like horrific and most senseless act of violence in province's history. He also confirmed RCMP will be doing an update at 6pm local time.

This clearly wasn’t a sudden mental breakdown. Just horrible, it appears he fabricated a vehicle to look like a police car. At first I wondered if he’d abducted/murdered an officer and camouflaged the police car by changing the car # but no, that’s not the case.

“.....Mr. Wortman, who RCMP had warned not to approach if seen, was “taken into custody” at an Irving Big Stop gas station in Enfield, N.S. Before police caught up with him, he was reportedly driving a police lookalike vehicle, which the RCMP said he would have painted himself.

A bloodied body was seen lying next to a vehicle parked at a gas station pump, after heavily-armed officers swarmed the area. Police would not confirm if that body was Mr. Wortman’s.

The president of the police union representing RCMP officers said Sunday morning that it appeared the suspect was intent on imitating a Mountie by replicating a uniform and a squad car.

The car he was driving “is one that he has basically made himself,” said Brian Sauvé, president of the National Police Federation. He added that “it’s all some kind of home fabrication.”.....
Suspect ‘taken into custody’ in active shooter investigation involving Portapique, N.S.

That may be true about the RCMP officer but they (RCMP) are saying shooter is in custody, not dead. Official news release is still coming, Global is prematurely reporting.

Yes, I’m noticing articles saying the shooter is alive (in custody), now being updated, unfortunately.

“The suspect of an active shooting investigation that started in Portapique on Saturday night is now in custody, Nova Scotia RCMP say. ..”

Well now CTV is reporting shooter was shot and killed (watching live TV). They are saying "police" are reporting this. We really need the press conference now to hear the official story!
