" Investigators are still working on the case, and say they have followed up on over one thousand tips into her death.

"We are determined to bring justice to Sonia and her family," OPP Det. Insp. Shawn Glassford said on Aug. 29, 2014.

"No tip is too small or insignificant in fact it could be the missing piece of the puzzle that we need to solve this case," he said.

A $50,000 reward is still being offered for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for Varaschin’s death."

I have doubts that LE have any suspects in this case. JMO

LE might be giving hints, imo

"DNA believed to belong to a suspect was retrieved earlier in the investigation, but police have yet to make an arrest.

OPP Det. Insp. Shawn Glassford says Varaschin’s killing hit home with residents because she was like many of them: she was a “neighbour next door”-type of person with a job and a desire to connect with others.

“It’s still on everybody’s mind, in Orangeville and beyond,” Glassford said, adding investigators have received more than 1,000 tips from the public.

He confirmed investigators seized a computer from Varaschin’s home early in the investigation and focused on online dating sites she may have used to meet men.

Glassford wouldn’t confirm reports she used PlentyOfFish.com.

“We were looking into any connection to online dating services, and I’ll just leave it at that,” he said, adding it remains a possibility Varaschin’s killer is someone she met online."

I like this part of the quote, myself. Always thought it was a neighbour or one of their visiting guests. JMO

Why would it take 5 years for LE to check out all of the online dating leads???? SMH.

Why would it take 5 years for LE to check out all of the online dating leads???? SMH.

Maybe the A.Madison hacking opened the doors to investigating that angle, or online dating leads have already been checked, but LE only decided to reveal that info now? imo.

LE has the DNA of at least one perp and boot impressions. Who hasn't been DNA tested yet? Hopefully everyone of the ex-neighbours and their visiting friends have voluntarily given DNA. If any of those guys hasn't, I hope LE has them high on their radar. JMO

Not long after Varaschin’s body was found, police began searching for two pieces of bedding that had gone missing from her home — bedding investigators said at the time may have been bloodied.

Neighbours also reported hearing screams from inside Varaschin’s home the night before she went missing.

I thought the bedding was found with her body. Is this tidbit of info new? I can't remember now.

Taking the bedding to hide her body with? But it seems her body was not found with the bedding. Trash the bedding because it contains sperm/DNA? IMO Sonia was violently raped and violently killed. JMO

The Internet Dating, Plenty of Fish has been discussed in the past.

Yes, I was wondering about the sheets though? I knew something was found but thought that the sheets were with her body. It seems that they were not, according to the Sun article linked above.

It is true that her bedding had been tossed out in another place, although exactly where le would not say. It was a woman who found them. It was posted in the news a long long time ago. I guess it was missed.

Here is something new - Yes, we know about the $50,000 reward, but look at the last part of the statement.

A $50,000 reward is being offered in place for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of any individuals involved in the murder.

The comforter might have been used to transport the body, but taking the fitted sheet too seems a little odd, reminds me of a nurse's attention to bedding, imo.

"Beige colour bedding, including a fitted sheet and a comforter, were among items taken from the home, police said Friday as they described the grisly scene"

What was the reward money for initially?

Maybe it's this info?

Speaking to reporters last week, police said they are confident that someone has information that could lead to an arrest in Varaschin’s murder.

“If you have any information, no matter how big or small you may feel it seems, it could be the piece of the puzzle that turns the corner with respect to this investigation,” Police Sgt. Peter Leon said.
A $50,000 reward is still being offered by police for anyone who comes forward with information that leads to an arrest or conviction.

“The public has played a key and integral part in this investigation. To date, officers have received over a 1000 tips, in fact to my understanding it is closer to 1200,” Leon says.
“That being said, the lead investigator, Det. Insp. Shawn Glassfordof the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch, does believe strongly that a member of the public does have the piece of information that could lead investigators to where they need to go and that’s directly to find Sonia’s killer.”

About the two guys in the gazebo:

Investigators hoped the two may have seen Varaschin’s vehicle in the early morning hours. Leon says the pair did come forward and spoke with investigators, but wouldn’t go into the specifics of what they may have seen.
“What those individuals were probably able to do is assist investigators with what we refer to as our investigative timeline, again filling in some of the blanks that do exist and again that is extremely helpful for our investigative team.”

Sunday marked the fifth anniversary of a mysterious murder in Orangeville that remains unsolved.

42 year-old Sonia Varaschin disappeared in August of 2010. Her remains were discovered in a heavily wooded area just a few days later.

Police have received over 12 hundred tips since then, but they are still no closer to solving the case.

It might have been easier to roll her up in the sheet she was laying on, the fitted sheet. Also getting rid of any DNA by tossing bedding somewhere else not with her body. But the killer wasn't thinking clearly, because the bedding was found. Anyone who finds bloody bedding is going to report it or suspect a murder.
